When Emilio Estevez launched The Way at the 2010 Toronto Film Festival, reaction was encouraging for the film he directed and which stars his father, Martin Sheen, as a grieving dad who walks The Camino de Santiago to honor his dead son. The movie’s good, but it is also the kind of well-intentioned picture that often slips through the cracks. Estevez has found a way to escape the straight-to-DVD fate that befalls many such films. He and Elixir Films’ David Alexanian have partnered with John Sloss and Bart Walker’s Producers Distribution Agency and Trevor Drinkwater’s ARC Entertainment to open the film exclusively in AMC Theaters in 15 markets on Oct. 7 for its first week, before broadening to 15 markets the following week and then expanding to 500 screens across the country.
The release will be overseen by a team of distribution vets that includes Dennis Rice, Richard Abramowitz and Cynthia Swartz. Appropriate for a film about a road trip, Estevez and Sheen will conduct a bus tour for eight weeks prior to the film’s wide release to drum up awareness. They’ll be gassing up the bus for a late August start.

Good to hear. Emilio is a talented filmmaker.
Why can’t Char Char be more like his brother. Emi’s looking more and more like Papa every day.
Can’t wait for THE BREAKFAST CLUB remake where Emi plays the principal …. or how about the parents are forced to spend Saturday detention with their kids in an effort to have parents be more involved, so you got like Emi married to Ally, J.N. to Molly, and Michael A. Hall with his “Life partner.” And all their kids… now that would be “The Way” to do it.
Picture sounds like a meditation on the suffering they’ve gone through, lately…
Like a lot of families, they’ve likely braced themselves for “the phone call,” hoping it will go one way and not the other.
A sincere expression of faith and loss played out on-screen might help a lot of people.
EE has directed TV EPs I’ve written/produced. He is such a good director and such a decent guy. The trailer for this film is moving. He is one of the nicest guys Ive met in a decade in the biz. Good for him.
One of the most moving and beautiful movies I’ve seen in a long time. It is so loving and at the same time, entertaining. Martin Sheen is phenomenal. Beautiful story. If you’ve ever experienced the death of a loved one with which you had/have unfinished emotional “business”, I highly recommend this film. It is shot lovingly, with such a unique and moving plot. Please, once this film is in distribution, please try to catch it. It deserves public and critical attention.
One of the true gentlemen in this business. It’s a beautiful film and deserves an audience. One for the good guys. Congrats Emilio!
Good for Emilio! And nice to see Dennis Rice’s name again. Two good people working together. Look forward to seeing the movie. Have fun guys and best to you both!
