SATURDAY PM/SUNDAY AM: 9TH UPDATE: As Warner Bros Pictures President of Domestic Distribution Dan Fellman gushed about all the records being set, “These numbers are amazing.” Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows – Part 2 flew to $92.1M in the U.S. and Canada Friday (including that record-setting $43.5M from midnight showings) and $44.2M Saturday and an estimated $33.6M Sunday helped by higher 3D ticket prices. Friday crushed the record for best single-day box office, best Friday box office. But the wizards didn’t break the Saturday record of $51.3M set by 2D-only Spider-Man 3 on its second day of release. However, HP‘s franchise finale definitely shatterered the biggest 3-day weekend ever with $168.5M to beat the other gold standard 2D-only Dark Knight‘s $158.4M. And the good news just kept coming. Part 2 scored an overall CinemaScore of ‘A’.
Overseas, the franchise finale grossed $307M with 34M admissions from over 20K screens in 59 countries. That’s the biggest international opening weekend of all time ahead of $260.4M’s Pirates Of The Caribbean 4 which is a 3D-to-3D comparison. Approximately 45% of the total screen count was 3D and accounted for about 61% of the box office. Led by record-breaking grosses in the UK ($36.6M) and Australia ($26.7M), all markets have performed exceedingly well, including Germany ($25.7M), France ($23.9M) and Japan ($21.5M). Globally, it also broke the IMAX opening weekend record with a worldwide gross of $23.5M, which includes setting a new record in North America with $15.5M. That makes for a worldwide total of $475.5M, yet another record besting the previous crown holder $394M set by 2D-only Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince.
Warner Bros President of International Distribution, Veronika Kwan-Rubinek“Harry Potter is truly a cultural phenomenon the world over. Whether in German, French, Japanese, Russian, or any language, international audiences have embraced the Harry Potter films over the years, with the powerful finale punctuating just how special the property is. We congratulate everyone associated with the films on this monumental achievement.”
Added Fellman: “These numbers are amazing, but they are only part of the story. It is impossible to quantify how thrilled and grateful we all are that both critics and audiences — especially loyal Harry Potter fans — continue to support the film. This is the culmination of an extraordinary decade, and a reflection of the hard work and dedication of many, many people on both sides of the camera, beginning with the brilliant J.K. Rowling, as well as producer David Heyman. We applaud them all.”

Woody Allen overtakes his previous best, 1986′s Hannah And Her Sisters becoming his highest grossing film of all time in North America. This is
Allen’s 42nd feature film that he has written and directed, and his 4th film with Sony Pictures Classics. But this is also a dopey comparison since Hannah’s number is not adjusted for inflation or higher ticket prices.
FRIDAY 4 PM, 6TH UPDATE: Sources tell me that Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows – Part 2 is already cruising past $80M for the day in North America (including that $43.5M from midnight showings). This is setting a record for largest single-day box office in motion picture history. (Previous largest day was Twilight Saga: New Moon at $72M.) Movietickets.com is reporting that Part 2 also broke ticket sales records yesterday becoming the new #1 online ticket pre-seller of all time by surging past New Moon. That’s a new global cume of $162.5M. Around the U.S., midnight showings sold out. In Lansing, Michigan, lines began at 8 PM at NCG Cinemas which pulled out all the stops for the release, from offering a week of movie marathons to special Potter-themed 3-D glasses. In turn, fans came dressed as their favorite witches and wizards. Updates throughout the night.
FRIDAY 10 AM, 5TH UPDATE: Warner Bros says the 2-day international cume for Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows – Part 2 is now $82.5M from 43 countries after earning $37.6M Thursday and $43.6M Wednesday. Combined with the North American market of a record-breaking $43.5M midnights, that’s now a $142.7M global cume. Another phenomenal day for the pic overseas where the 3D share of the box office is approximately 61%. IMAX also reported a record breaking opening for midnights of $2M on 274 domestic locations. Meanwhile, in Orlando last night, 3,000 audience members of the midnight film screening of Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part 2 at AMC Universal Cineplex 20 with free passes to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter and had the park all to themselves from 3 to 5 AM.
Comparing same days and same foreign markets, Part 2 is 39% higher than Part 1. Highlights include Korea which opened to an enormous Won 3.3B ($3M) from 562 screens, including Wednesday previews; Argentina Ps 3.9M ($961K) from 253 screens / 3D share 43% for the biggest opening ever. On its second day of release: France: €3.4M (US$4.8M) from 1,195 screens for 2-day cume to date of €8.5M ($11.9M); Australia: A$4M ($4.2M) from 754 screens / 3D share 59% for 2-day cume to date of A$11.0M ($11.7M) which is the first time ever a film has grossed in excess of A$10Million in just 2 days; Germany: €3.0M (US$4.2Mm) from 1,641 screens / 3D share 69% for 2-day cume of €6.6M ($9.5M); and Russia Rbl 110M ($3.9M) from 1,561 screens / 3D share 72% for a 2-day cume of Rbl 228M ($8.1M). All the remaining territories of the 59-country release open today, including Spain, the UK, Japan, Brazil and Mexico.
FRIDAY 8:30 AM, 4TH UPDATE: Warner Bros said today that Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows – Part 2 grossed $43.5M last night from 3,800 North American locations helped by higher 3D ticket prices, shattering the previous midnight screenings record of $30M set by Twilight Saga: Eclipse which was only a 2D movie. IMAX set another record midnight of $2M for the 3D franchise finale helpe. The franchise finale also scored 97% positive on Rotten Tomatoes. “Records will fly out the window this weekend,” a studio exec is predicting. “All 3D theaters sold out to excellent reactions.”
THURSDAY 6:30 PM, 3RD UPDATE: My sources have the latest box office numbers for Warner Bros’ Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows – Part 2. Domestically, $45 million has been collected already in pre-sales for this opening North America weekend, including $27M for tonight’s 3,000+ midnight screenings which could reach $40M alone. Internationally, $43.6 million has been added from the 24 of 59 countries where the franchise finale opened Wednesday. Another 19 nations debut the movie Thursday but that figure won’t be available until tomorrow. By Friday, the film will playing in an additional 16 territories as well as in 4,575 theaters in the U.S. and Canada. What these numbers mean is that Warner Bros is on track to break its own Dark Knight domestic opening 3-day weekend record of $158M. Helped by Harry Potter – Part 2‘s higher 3D ticket prices, the new pic could reach $180M. ”Midnights and Friday will be huge,” a rival studio exec tells me. “The only question will be how front-loaded they are and where they end up. A lot of the international openings Wednesday were records so the total foreign will be huge as well.”
Right now I’m told that advance sales numbers and midnight screening numbers are changing ever 1/2 hour. Theater owners are just starting to record and report tickets purchased for tonight. As of 4 PM, Warner Bros had 1,800 theaters reporting $27M, but 3,000 will be playing the movie starting midnight so many theaters have yet to provide numbers. And then there are the projected walk-ins. It’s clear that this Harry Potter sign-off will set a midnight record, bigger than the previous record-holder Twilight Saga: Eclipse which scored $30M.
Another record to fall will be the biggest single day ever, set by Twilight Saga: New Moon with $72M. Warner Bros thinks it’s possible for $40M midnights and $40M Friday for an $80M single best day. I’m told the big theater circuits like AMC and Regal have already sold out midnight screenings and are adding 3 AM showings. Some are even scheduling round-the-clock releasing all weekend. ”People have just been coming out of the woodwork,” a Warner Bros exec marveled to me. “What this really tells you is that our busines is alive and healthy and the old cliche is true: make good movies and they will show up.”
The biggest foreign weekend opening was the recent Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides‘ $260M this summer. Warner Bros expects Harry Potter – Part 2 to demolish that. Harder will be shattering the biggest worldwide opening set by the recent Transformers: Dark Of The Moon over a 7-day period: $402M. Speaking of international, Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows – Part 2 opened to $43.6m in 26 countries on Wednesday by scoring 65% of its take from 3D. Part 2 is running 82% higher than Part 1. Territory highlights include:
Australia: A$ 7.0M (US$7.5M) from 727 screens / 3D share 58.5%
biggest opening day ever, including biggest midnight sneaks
France: €5.1M (US$7.1M) from 1,195 screens / 3D share 67%
all time biggest Wednesday opening
Germany: €3.6M (US$5.3M) from 1,641 screens / 3D share 77%
biggest preview result Ever
Italy: €3.3m (US$4.6M) from 988 screens / 3D share 57%
biggest opening day ever
Russia: Rbl 115M (US$4.1M) from 1,561 screens / 3D share 66%
biggest WB opening day ever
Sweden: L/C 13.6M (US$2.1M) from 226 screens / 3D share 76%
biggest opening day ever
Norway: L/C 10.2M (US$1.8M) from 259 screens / 3D share 76%
biggest opening day ever
Holland: €1.2M (US$1.7M) from 233 screens / 3D share 83%
biggest opening day ever
Denmark: L/C 8.7M (US$1.6M) from 162 screens / 3D share 73%
biggest opening day ever
Belgium: €1.0M (US$1.4M) from 132 screens / 3D share 49%
biggest opening day ever
Finland: €534k (US$749K) from 140 screens / 3D share 75%
biggest opening day ever
But there was a glitch for Harry Potter – Part 2 in India. I’ve confirmed that Warner Bros International was having trouble reaching a deal with multiplexes there as of Wednesday night. The multiplexes wanted a 55% cut of the film’s profits. So the new film was just going to play on single screened theaters. But the studio just told me it supplied prints and digital drives to the multiplexes on Thursday India time.
THURSDAY AM, 2ND UPDATE: Sources tell me that Warner Bros as of 7 AM already has $13M in ticket sales for tonight’s midnight shows for the finale Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows – Part 2.
WEDNESDAY PM UPDATE: My sources say Warner Bros’ Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows – Part 2 opened internationally with record-breaking sneaks in Australia (2.5M from 273 sites), Germany (1.8M from 563 sites), France $1.1M from 317 screens), Benelux, and Scandinavia. The 3D share of box office is averaging between 70% and 90%. IMAX also had record breaking numbers. Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows – Part 2 has already broken several North American ticket records in the two days leading up to the series finale’s mega-release on Friday. Dan Fellman, President of Warner Bros Pictures Domestic Distribution, said advance ticket sales have skyrocketed to more than $32 million, a new pre-opening record. Many midnight and first-day show times are already sold out across the country and the studio keeps arranging with exhibitors for more and more screenings beyond the 3,800 locations opening at midnight Thursday. In total by Friday, the last pic will play on more than 11,000 screens in 4,375 locations — both marking records for the Harry Potter series.
Breaking another industry record, the film is being released on 274 IMAX screens nationwide. The very first Harry Potter movie to be released in 3D, Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows – Part 2 will be shown in 3D at more than 3,000 locations. The studio has arranged for special commemorative Harry Potter 3D glasses to be given free to fans attending select 3D midnight showings while supplies last.
Fellman issued this statement: “We appreciate the loyalty of Harry Potter fans and understand that they have been waiting 10 years for this moment. We can’t wait to show them the movie, which we believe delivers on every level, so we are putting the film out on as many screens as possible in an effort to satisfy demand from coast to coast. We want to ensure that fans who have been counting down to the finale will have every chance to see it, early and often, and we hope that they will take advantage of the opportunity to watch all their favorite characters in 3D for the first time, which is an experience not-to-be-missed.”
By Wednesday morning, Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part II had already become both Fandango’s and MovieTickets.com’s top ticket-seller of 2011 with 48 hours to spare before its North American release. The Harry Potter franchise finale has already sold out more than 5,000 showtimes across the country before its official Friday opening, and U.S. theater owners keep adding screenings to keep up with fan demand in all 50 states.
MovieTickets.com reports its records are shattering in advance of opening day and, when compared with other films in the Harry Potter film franchise: pre-sales for Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows – Part 2 are 38% higher than Part 1 three days prior to opening. The pic is trending to become the all-time #2 pre-seller in Fandango’s 11-year history, following only 2009′s The Twilight Saga: New Moon. This final adventure is currently conjuring up 91% of Fandango’s daily ticket sales. “It’s our fastest-selling movie of the year and our best-selling Potter movie of all time,” Fandango EVP and General Manager Rick Butler says in a statement. “The first Potter helped put advance ticketing on the map in 2001, so it’s fitting that the grand finale would break records with fans on our Web site and mobile applications.”
This weekend, the franchise finale opens in a total 59 countries on 19,500 screens. As of Wednesday, it’s in 24 countries, including Italy and Russia. Thursday, it opens in an additional 19 nations, including Korea. And Friday, it debuts in an additional 16 territories, including Spain, the UK, Japan, Brazil and Mexico. China opens on August 4th. (All box office from midnight sneaks will be included in the opening Wednesday numbers once they are in.)
WEDNESDAY AM, BREAKING NEWS… I’ve learned that Warner Bros is giving Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows – Part 2 a mega-release into 4,375 theaters and over 11,000 screens in North America alone on Friday. This will make it the widest domestic Harry Potter release of all time. The film will be shown in 3,000 3D locations, which constitutes a motion picture industry record, and on 4,250 3D screens. It will play at 274 IMAX venues, another industry record, as well as 120 Premium Large Format cinemas, also an industry record, and 270 drive-ins, another industry record. When the pic opens at Thursday midnight, Part II will be playing in at least 3,800 theaters. But I’m told that number is climbing by the hour. Already Warner Bros anticipates 300 Harry Potter marathons playing all seven of the movies ending at midnight Thursday with the 8th unreeling. There are 1,100 theaters planning to play HP 7A into 7B that midnight. “We are positioned to exceed the largest Harry Potter opening box office of all time,” a Warner Bros top exec tells me confidently. Remember, it’s already the largest-grossing franchise in motion picture history.
Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows – Part 2 is the last adventure in the Harry Potter film series. In the epic finale, the battle between the good and evil forces of the wizarding world escalates into an all-out war, with Harry Potter in the climactic showdown with Lord Voldemort. Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson reprise their roles as Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. Part 2 was directted by David Yates and produced by David Heyman, David Barron and J.K. Rowling. Steve Kloves adapted the screenplay, based on Rowling’s novel. Lionel Wigram is the executive producer.
Now where did Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 1 leave off?
Editor-in-Chief Nikki Finke - tip her here.

I know Harry Potter is critic-proof, but I’m sure that the overwhelming praise this finale is getting from critics can only help it box office-wise. Even some critics on RT who confessed that they hate the franchise admitted they actually enjoyed this one. I think this will be the biggest film in the series because even people who gave up on the franchise a long time ago might check this out. This one has an ending after all.
Already doing so well in pre-sale, this one has a shot at the largest weekend record and largest day – could steal a lot of records from Twilight. Let’s keep our fingers crossed!
And Dark Knight…
It’s amazing how some people won’t give credit where due when it comes to the Harry Potter franchise. The Harry Potter franchise has only disappointed me in the fact that Warner Brothers has been more concerned with editing the movie to allow more showings of these movies and not giving out more plot points that were in the books. This movie is going to be no different. It only has a running time of 2 hours and 10 minutes. Hardly enough time to finish off the last book. So, in the interest of getting as many screenings as possible, it was edited so it could have at least four runs per screen a day.
The only problems are going to be with two things. Possible word of mouth and lack of 3D screens after Captain America and The Smurfs take over the 3D screens. Captain America will likely just take away from Transformers 3 but The Smurfs might take away from Harry Potter. It all depends on how Warner Brothers set up their deals when it came to it’s 3D screens. IMAX is different because usually they screen longer runs with screen prints. If the word of mouth is bad then WB won’t see a end to the franchise on a good note. It will take a hit from it’s opening weekend gross but the second weekend will just depend on the buzz on this installment. If there is a good hold from Friday to next Friday then the Harry Potter frachise finishes on a high note. Although it wouldn’t be surprising with such a huge opening to see a major drop. I am predicting a opening weekend of 135 million. That includes the midnight screenings on Thursday night. Where it goes from there is in the fate of the fans. It will be interesting to see what happens next weekend with this movie. This weekend it’s going to blow every movie out of the water….next week is another story though all depending on that important word of mouth.
Judging by the critic reviews (96% on RT, 87 on Metacritic) Im going to say word of mouth will be pretty darn good. I would just like to see HP break any Twilight records. HP isnt perfect by any means but it is way more worthy than that piece of shit franchise.
I would love to see that as well Laura when it comes to HP breaking records made from Twilight(the fake vampire/werewolf bullshit franchise). I went to one of the local theaters here in State College to change tickets from 3:30 to 9:30 tomorrow night in 2D and people were already lined up outside of the theater for the midnight screenings. It was a sign of things to come I am sure. There were about 10 people lined up at 12:30 pm EDT. Bet you that number comes back at least 10 fold before they start letting the people into the theaters. I can see all of the Twilight records possibly going down to HP. It might with the late tracking make a run at The Dark Knight for the opening weekend gross record of 158.4 million. If it opens at around 75-80 million on Friday including the midnight sneaks….so long to ALL of the major records.
Laura, you get it.
Laura’s comment is the funniest one yet. “I hope Potter outgrosses that piece of s*** Twilight”. Because outgrossing a piece of s*** proves — what exactly? That your favorite franchise ISN’T s***? But you just established that s*** (ie Twilight0 makes money! LOL
I was never saying that Twilight makes money. It obviously does or else it wouldnt have had records. I believe (and would think most people would agree) HP is way above Twilight quality wise. If you want to think HP is a piece of shit, whatever, but HP is about love and death and sacrifice, ect while Twilight is about the importance of finding a boyfriend and having a baby. The acting, story, just really everything is far beyond Twilight. Therefore, I dont think Twlight was at all worthy to hold any records and was and am happy to see its record all go down.
sorry, meant to say I was never saying that Twilight “doesnt” make money. I forgot the doesnt.
Laura, you forgot one point about Twilight. The legs from these movies fall apart on the weekend they open. The majority of fans see it at the special midnight screenings or the day it opens but then the audience quickly falls apart. The Friday to Friday drop is usally around 65-70% with Twilight because the interest in the movie goes down the drain. The diehard fans would have seen it already and probably wouldn’t be able to persuade non Twilight fans to check out the movie. My girlfriend has tried to ask me to see Breaking Dawn with her and I have refused to do so. I see no reason to see the final two other movies given that the first time I saw the Cullens in daylight, I went upstairs and left the living room. Harry Potter is going to go down with a legacy that will live for generations to come. Twilight is going to be just a franchise based on a series of novels that performed strong for a day or two then fall apart soon after that.
Dan…sorry, did you read my earlier comment? I support HP…I am ectastic that it breaking all these records (regardless of what it makes next weekend and overall). I love the books and love the movies, especially the last movie. I was trying to respond to Liz and her dumb comment. (Also, make sure you keep refusing to see Breaking Dawn..its the worst of the lot)
Dude there is NO WAY you could include all the plot points from the books and have a succinct, cohesive film that children (remember they are the main audience) can understand and sit through.
Movies are NOT books. I don’t know why some people just don’t comprehend that.
I don’t know either, but I await the day studios stop making them from books. Star Wars did not start out at Random House. Nor did Avatar. Nor did Aliens. Nor did Raiders of The Lost Ark. Nor did…
studios have always adapted books into films. don’t expect that to ever end.
And here are some movies that DID start out from books:
The Godfather, To Kill a Mockingbird, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, All Quiet on the Western Front, Gone with the Wind, The Bridge Over the River Kwai, Schindler’s List, Doctor Zhigavo, A Clockwork Orange, The Silence of the Lambs…
….you do know Jaws was a book first, right?
As was The Godfather?
As was Gone With The Wind?
Books and plays were used for film adaptation since the inception of Hollywood.
I know it’s dictated by contracts, but any exhibitor that takes away 3D screens from ‘Harry Potter’ and gives them to ‘The Smurfs’ deserves the impending huge financial blow.
Technically there’s been more than 4 hours dedicated to the last book.
Just got home after watching it her in Munich. It was an exceptional experience (in a sold-out theatre). Loved the movie … as did, or so it surely seemed, everyone else. There was applause, there were cheers (which you usually don’t get from a German audience, even if they like what they saw). As for the 3D … there were quite a number of moments where it not just added something visually stunning, but to the magic that is the world of Harry Potter (or Harry Potter’s world, same difference).
Can someone summarize previous 8 movies for me so I can see this one?
They’re about this dude.
They’re about this dick named Harry.
^^^ Best in show.
Guess you’re gonna need to read 7 very LONG books today before you go see this movie…..oh by the way….WHO IS TOM RIDDLE?????
ROTF LMAO!!!
Have you seen Star Wars films Chapters 4-6??
Replace “Luke Skywalker” with “Harry Potter”, “Darth Vader” with “Voldemort”, “Princess Leia” with “Hermione” and “The Force” with “Sorcery” and you pretty much got it.
It’s really too bad they’ve not reached a deal with multiplexes still (Thursday night 8 pm right now) in India.
The multiplex greedsters here want a 55% cut of the film’s profits and hence the delay.
It will play on single screened theaters – of which there are like 5 total in all of Mumbai.
I don’t personally care for these movies, but they don’t bother me. With people commenting about this one being the biggest one (out of 8?), I just wonder why it would be much bigger than the other ones. Why would people who hadn’t seen the previous 7, want to see this one? I would think you’d have no idea what was going on. Why wouldn’t it have basically the same audience as the previous episodes?
This is the last installment in one of the most lucrative franchises of all time! Not to mention that this film’s fight scenes (if they live up to the standard of the book, which according to the reviews, they are) are much larger and spectacular than any other in the series. First time Potter watchers are even coming out for this one, and the more I think about it, the more I think this could be the “movie event” of the summer. Plus, I’ve heard from various people that this one has the rewatchability factor that the others don’t have.
I’m sure there are millions of people who didn’t see the first 7 in theaters but watched them at home, on DVD etc. They’re coming out to theaters this time for the event factor.
Personally, I can’t imagine not seeing every new release in a theatre the way movies are meant to be seen, but you have to consider that quite a few people who have only seen the films on DVD or on TV will come out to see this last one in a theatre for the full experience of it. That, and also the repeat business of people seeing it multiple times, too.
This is the weekend that the liberal hollywood elite are gonna get their comeuppance.
Harry Potter will be an EPIC FAIL due to those of us in the ‘flyover’ states rising up against the Obama-loving leftists Daniel Ratcliffe & especially that commie, Maggie Smith.
Lmao! Sorry, I just thought this thread was missing that element of bat-shit crazy that has shown it’s ugly political head on this site in recent weeks.
I am going to see HP in 3D at screening this evening. Can’t wait!
Have a great weekend!
Btw, I heard there’s a huge block party on 405 this weekend. Good times!
Haha, ok GM, at first when I started reading you comment, it was like, oh great, another nutter, especially considering I have never once heard Dan Radcliffe say his political views in public, or for that matter Maggie Smith. Thanks for the laugh. I too will be going to a screening this evening…though in 2D. I hate 3D.
Very funny but ever so true about some of the remarks on other stories that think that how people feel about politics judges what they see in a theater. I am a conservative but I don’t go as far as to say don’t see a movie because their political views don’t agree with mine. I go out to movies to be entertained and not worry about the troubles of the world for a few hours. That is why people should go to a movie…..not to say to boycott a movie because of a political stance but to ENJOY the time away from the world’s problems. The people that boycott movies for political reasons need to get a damn life!
Comment of the day.
Comment of the week I would say!
LOLOLOL. Ahhhh, I love you. Bat shit crazy. ROTFLMAO.
$13m so far for midnights? That’s the biggest case of ‘low balling’ I’ve ever seen in my life!
I think this is going to end up like Transfomers:Dark Of The Moon. Remember a few weeks back when Paramount execs were low balling the estimates even after the first three days. Warner Brothers is doing the same exact thing. Trying to downplay their expectations so if it under performs….they will have a explanation for it. They will say well, we only expected it to be 13 million for midnight screenings. I however am expecting huge business at midnight. I am thinking 18-22 million on those screenings alone. Screw what Warner Brothers think….this last Potter movie is going to break several records.
I thgink the final “Harry Potter” movie is going to smash box-office records.
I think it will do at least $225 million in the United States alone (including Canada, if that’s included in the weekly box-office grosses).
It may well do $250 million.
Look for beaches and theme parks to be less full than usual this weekend.
And prime-time TV viewing on Friday and Saturday nights may reach low levels not seen since the 1950′s (when there were fewer people and far fewer TV sets).
$250 million? I hope you mean opening weekend. It’s on record to make $180 million in 3 days. OF COURSE it’s gonna pass 250. They say it’s beating dark knight which finished at a little over $500 million. HP will beat that
Eric B:
Yes, I think a $250 million opening weekend domestically is now very possible.
And as noted above, other forms of lsisure and recreation will suffer bigtime.
Sorry for the confusion.
Not a “Dark Knight” fanboy as I feel that film was pretty overrated during it’s theatrical release, but the final Potter won’t top 500 million domestically. Sure it will easily be a Potter film that makes it to 1B Worldwide. But I think this movie will stall out around 350-400 in North America.
Still a great result, but not enough to kill Batman.
It reminds me of what Paramount did with Transformers:Dark Of The Moon. Lower the expectations of the midnight screenings and weekend so if it underperfoms then the studio can make a talking point saying that it was within studio expectations or they knew it would underperform at the box office. If it grosses more than expected they find another way to spin the results to make it look as it overpreformed at the box office.
I wonder if Carmageddon has any effect on this in LA?
Not sure what you mean. If you’re thinking that people will stay home, then no, it had no effect – shows were sold out all over the place.
Can someone explain to me why Disney decided to release ‘Winnie the Pooh’ this weekend?
‘Harry Potter’ appeals to kids as well as nostalgic teens and 20 year olds. Who’s going to be left to see the yellow bear that hasn’t been relevant in 10 years? (And for the record, I loved ‘Winnie the Pooh’ when I was growing up. Just not sure that the decision makes sense to go head to head with the most anticipated movie of the summer for the same audience.)
I’m wondering if you actually have any experience with young children, because this Harry Potter has a very different audience than the new Winnie the Pooh film. You could certainly take children in the age range of 2-5 years old to see Winnie the Pooh, but children that young would most likely be terrified by quite a lot in HP7.
Disney decided to release Winnie The Pooh as a alternative to the dark tone of Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 2. They aren’t going to gross much out of this one because HP is going to rule the box office this week and possibly next week as well if the reviews and word of mouth from moviegoers hold up the way they are now. Disney had good intentions with Pooh and company. It’s just sad that they are opening it on a weekend where the box office numbers are going to be through the roof for one tentpole movie. I too was a fan of the Winnie The Pooh books growing up but it’s sad to see a movie based on what we grew up on being used as a alternative just for the sake of trying to keep young children away from the last Harry Potter film.
I’m looking in Saturday morning and see that Winnie the Pooh is being outperformed by Cars 2 in its third week. 8m projected doesn’t look good from a biz point of view.
Christ…how are people not fatigued by this drawn-out series yet? Wake me up when The Hobbit comes out, and Jackson will show everyone once again how real fantasy/sci-fi is done.
OMG you have got to be kidding!!! I have never seen such a boring series as Lord of the Rings, no matter how many Oscars were “given” out to Return of the King, because they were “pity” Oscars!!! Peter Jackson “might” be a good director, but he has ruined a very good book series. At least the Potter series was held as much true to the book as possible, with as little left out as possible (the last movie I am angry about because they cut out 40 minutes just for the sake of making more money).
Hummm, you are crazy. They don’t give “pity” Oscars. No “pity” for Hitchcock, Kubrick, Altman, Leone, Kurosawa or Charlie Chaplin?! Why don’t you go watch Crash again you idiot.
I fell asleep during the over long LOTR movies. I’d rather watch 3 hours of Winnie the Pooh and be a kid again for that time…LOTR seemed to have a lot of walking nad little action and I never really understood the books…Led Zeppelin’s Ramble On is about as close as I can get to the series and not be bored
Ya, we’ll be passing on the geeked out trash this weekend. There’s a great family movie arriving in theatres this but it aint the four eyed wand waver.
Winnie the Pooh people.
Come on, this is the kind of movie we need to support. Hand drawn classics from Disney. Not more of this hollow CGI trash plaguing the universe.
DOWN WITH HP!
I hate to be the bearer of bad news to you but HP is going to break almost all of the current records that are in the books except for Avatar’s total gross here in the US and that is because Avatar had some 3D screens for almost four months straight whereas HP has a short time span in 3D….in some areas two weeks and other sites a month. It’s good to see a family aimed movie come out as a alternative to the dark nature of Deathly Hallows Part 2. However with that said, it’s not going to matter much…..Harry Potter is going to clean house this weekend and possibly next weekend as well if the movie shows signs of legs. Legs meaning repeat business from fans. Critics who have hated this franchise really do like this movie. It has a very high score rating on Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic and people usually come out to theaters to see movies that score high on those sites. Pooh will make it’s money on DVD but as far as it’s shelf life in theaters go….it doesn’t stand a chance against Harry Potter. I am thinking that Captain America just might tank if the legs are strong for Potter. Same goes for Cowboys Vs Aliens.
Cowboys Vs. Aliens will flop anyway most likely. It’s an intruging combo but westerns have not mean popular since the 60′s and alien invasions movies have been failing lately.
True Grit
J has a future in movies. But then again, pirates.
Cowboys Vs. Aliens, yes, but there is no way in the world that Captain America is tanking, even with Harry Potter ruling the box office.
I’m so sorry, but the Harry Potter book series have gotten the world’s children to READ again!!! For me, that is an achievment in itself. Witches, Goblins, Muggles….all pretend. Kids know the difference between real and fake. C’mon, my son wanted to be a Power Ranger when he was little. He knew how fake they were. So in my opinion, the HP books were wonderful. And changing them into movies were gold for Warner Brothers.
I’m terribly sorry, but I will NOT be seeing another Disney movie, because they have totally destroyed every movie they have laid their hands on since Pocohontas. I was near Richmond, VA when I took my children to see this movie, complete with waterfalls, and talking animals. I was ashamed at how Disney handled a historical movie. I then, on our way home to Virginia Beach, made a stop to Jamestown, to show my children the REAL Jamestown, and where Pocohontas was from. My then 4 year old daughter asked “where are the waterfalls Mommy?”. I had to explain to her that Disney LIED in his movie, and we waled thru Jamestown and learned the REAL history of Jamestown, not the PROPAGANDA that was portrayed in the Disney movie.
Also, the Winnie the Pooh movies have been ruined since they did the original movie based on the original book, where they merged 2 books into a movie. This movie, from what I have seen, looks to be a horrible Pooh movie, that I would never take a child to.
I have lost hope on the communist Walt Disney and the legacy that he has left behind (I am not calling the current reign communist). I think that they have lost focus of what they are doing, and they need to get focus back on the REAL thing when they are doing truthful movies, and if they are doing fiction, then they can take the liberties that they want to.
Um… Walt was vehemently anti-communist. Then again, being such a history buff you’d know that, wouldn’t you?
Well, that must have been a fun car ride.
Or maybe go see both. HP for the older members of my family and Pooh for the littlest kids later this weekend. These two movies are really not comparable and are for completely different audiences.
All 7 midnight screenings were sold out at my theater – and it was a great movie-going experience!
WB Exec – My protagonist Voldemort has no nose.
Rival exec – Oh really, how does he smell?
WB exec – LIKE MONEY!
Rival exec – *sigh*
You mean antagonist.
This movie will be so front loaded in the first weekend. Watch a big drop next weekend. Of course with all the 3D surcharges, fans will watch it in 3D no matter what. All the 2D screenings will be sold out first thus forcing those who really want to see it badly to shell out the extra surcharge for FAKE 3D. Yes people, FAKE 3D! Why watching a converted 3D movie when the first 7 movies were in 2D? I still expect this movie to only reach $300M (maybe $350M) domestically.
Deathly Hallow Part 1 was out in my area almost until it was released on video. I somehow don’t think it will drop off because the “fanboys” have seen the movie. Actually, the “fanboys” go to see the movie so many times that they keep the sales going up, up, up!!
I completely disagree on its box office prospects for the weekend. If it does 40M in midnights and 40M on Friday, it won’t break The Dark Knight’s total of 158M, much less reach 180M. It will likely stay flat on Saturday (without midnights) and drop 25-30% on Sunday for a weekend in the 148-152M range. Possibly even a little bit less.
EITHER WAY TWILIGHT SAGA BD WILL BLOW EVERYTHING OUT THE WATER. AND THAT’S JUST PART 1 wait until part 2:)))))
I don’t want to be one of those negative jerks, but the Twilight fever has dropped off immensely. Breaking Dawn may not be an “epic fail”, but I don’t think it’ll have the same draw as the first three.
Clearly you are someone who didn’t get the memo, or read the books and thus is talking out of your ass. Breaking Dawn is the wedding, the sexing and the baby making – the culmination of what has whipped females 8 to 80 into a frenzy for the last 3 years. To say it will ‘drop off,’ shows you have no idea what you’re talking about, and are too lazy to do even the simplest of research – it’s also very similar to what those clueless male studio suits who passed on Twilight back in 2007 thought, which was WRONG. Keep underestimating and being ignorant about ‘what women want,’ at your own financial peril and subsequent job loss, dude.
hahahahaha…no, it wont. that fourth book is beyond crap. it makes the first three look like literary masterpieces
Even as a Twilight fan, I have to agree with this. Still, I don’t think it will be too bad.
Yeah, but like the above poster says, the most important thing for the 99% female moviegoers, is that it’s Edward and Bella’s wedding, the fcking, and the pregnancy – you can pretty much amp the previous numbers up 10-fold. Do you actually think women go to these movies, or read the books for the ‘plot?’ hahahahaha, to you too, ohh clueless one. I really REALLY hope you don’t work in Hollywood in any important capacity.
The last Twilight book is crap. My daughters were big fans until they read that trash. They don’t even know if the want to see the movie. Twilight Breaking Dawn isn’t going to break records. Please turn off your caps lock off. The Dark Knight Rises can go after Harry Potter’s record next year.
Between this and Hangover 2′s massive haul it’s starting to make a little more sense why they decided to take as much of a risk on Green Lantern this year.
a *little* more
All the opening weekend records go down…best midnight gross was shattered, best opening day will be shattered, best opening weekend will go down as well…$160M+ will set the new bar for opening box-office. By the way, the movie is great as was the entire series…the biggest box-office series in the history of the movie making business. The wizarding world of Harry Potter will be missed but not forgotten.
The series is great, but it’s not the biggest box office in the history of film. The Bond films have made just under 12 billion in Box Office. And ajusted for inflation, the Star Wars films have made about 5 billion JUST IN THE U.S. I have no idea about worldwide, but I’m sure that adds at least another 2-3 billion, if not more.
saw it last night. the movie is outstanding and will have a lot of people coming back. they deserve every penny they make, which is rare these days
Jesus Christ this humongous. It might actually go to 180.
I’m very pleased, not that I’m an actual fan of the films. I’ve yet to see one or read any of the books, but its clear all the work that has gone into these adaptations and the use of the best of British acting through out deserves praise. I just may venture into this one.
I’m also thrilled for the lead, Mr. Radcliffe. I have seen him in both of his B’way appearences and find him to be an extraordinarily talented actor. I’m glad his success in this franchise will afford him endless opportunities on the stage over what looks to be like a career of infinite possibilities.
I’m also looking forward to his next film The Lady in Black.
I predict a Mark Hamil like career for all 3 leads of the HP franchise. lol They have the charisma of milktoast. The JK Rowling story, the Special FX, the talented skilled supporting players are what made the franchise – they looked their parts, and did a competent job, most of them…but as far as laying money down to see Radcliffe, or Watson or Gint in anything else…highly doubtful.
