EXCLUSIVE: 20th Century Fox has acquired the Royden Lepp graphic novel Rust: Visitor in the Field, and has set Aline Brosh McKenna to write the script. The graphic novel takes place on a family’s farm in the American heartland, where Jet Jones crashes into the barn, pursued by a giant decommissioned war robot. The heartland has been devastated by a world war and the family tries to decide if the kid with the jet pack is the key to their survival. The graphic novel will be published in September by Archaia Entertainment.
The film will be produced by Fox-based Simon Kinberg with Archaia’s Stephen Christy and PJ Bickett exec producers. It’s a change of pace for McKenna, whose script credits include The Devil Wears Prada, 27 Dresses, and the recently wrapped Doug McGrath-directed I Don’t Know How She Does It and the Cameron Crowe-directed We Bought A Zoo. The latter project is also for Fox.

Way to go Stephen Christy. A truly delightful individual whose passion and intelligence has steered Archaia to great heights. You did it Steven.
Agreed: glad to see Christy in the trades again! This project sounds like a lot of fun, can’t wait to see what comes of it. Congrats to all!
Sounds a lot like “The Rocketeer” w/ a robot.
Stephen Christy is the real thing. Congratulations.
Stephen Christy is the most handsome man in Hollywood.
Stephen Christy is the next big thing. Fox couldn’t have picked a better person to tackle this project. Best of luck Stephen!
When this movie comes out I see it and love it. Then I will buy the videogame and play the shit out of it.
Jet packs plus Robots and stuff equals profits and good times. I just hope Stephen taps an action specialist for the major spectacle beats that are so very needed in a movie of this nature.
Get serious about spectacle Stephen. The story is gold.
very surprised by the choice of writer to adapt this. Doesn’t Alene Broch Mckenna usually work in bad romcom’s?
Yes, George, she usually writes really tepid, mediocre scripts, but she had a hit a while back so she gets a million chances. That’s Hollywood.
I like comic books, and stephen christy. Good Job!
Way to go Stephen!!!!!!
So do I have to be gay, or Jewish, or a woman, or what to get *my* graphic novel picked up? A Freemason? Illuminati? I mean, what? It can’t be that a million people read this piece of shit book and know the character. Each announcement on Deadline I’m scratching my head. COMIC FANS WHO BUY BOOKS EVERY WEEK NEVER HEARD OF HALF THESE COMICS THAT ARE GETTING OPTIONED AND MADE.
I mean WTF
Maybe people haven’t heard of it because the book isn’t even out yet? This was a preemptive buy… I think the book comes out this fall.
Promising project with talented executives! Congratulations to Fox & Archaia and a special shout out to EP Stephen Christy!
At least there were two objective comments above. The rest are just pointless praise for those that don’t deserve it. What’s that saying, ‘born on third, think they have a triple?’
