Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert and Bruce Campbell are readying to remake their cult horror hit The Evil Dead, tapping Fede Alvarez to write and direct the redo and putting the project on the fast track via Raimi, Tapert and Nathan Kahane’s Ghost House Pictures. Alvarez, who came to the producers’ attention via his short film Panic Attack, penned the script with Rodo Sayagues, and scribe Diablo Cody is doing revisions on the latest draft. In the original 1981 film that starred Campbell, five friends at a remote cabin in the woods unknowingly summon demons from an ancient civilization, causing all sorts of bloody and gory problems. The movie spawned a pair of sequels: Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness. Raimi, Tapert and Campbell, the original film’s producers, will produce the new incarnation, and Ghost House partners Kahane and Joe Drake will executive produce. Nicole Brown and J.R. Young will oversee the project for Ghost House. Lionsgate will handle international sales on the film. Two things come to mind: The in-camera special effects were the best parts of the original, so it will be interesting to see how modern VFX will be utilized. Also, the news that Juno scribe Cody is on the case is interesting, though she does have a horror film under her belt having penned the Megan Fox-starrer Jennifer’s Body, which didn’t do much at the box office. Stay tuned on both fronts. Alvarez is repped by CAA and Anonymous Content. Cody is repped by WME and Mason Novick.

I am torn up on this one. The technology is available to make this a great remake but the campy feel of the original “was” key to make it an instant classic. One thing for sure, I am glad that Sam Raimi anf his original team is doing it himself!
Bad idea on so many fronts. But hey its Hollywood, commerce rules.
Ok. Now we have a problem.
If they’re remaking it themselves, I don’t see a problem with it. Its not like Raimi, Tapert and Campbell are going to destroy their baby.
If this ends up coming out before THE CABIN IN THE WOODS, I’ll go insane.
I’ll swallow your soul!
Got the original on VCR tape. Definately a B movie.
Because Diablo Cody’s last attempt at horror was critically-acclaimed, a huge financial success, and not a piece of shit.
Oh, wait.
Err… you stole words right out of my soul.
you’re both just lime green jello.
I thought she was writing Sweet Valley High and also writing her own project that she was going to direct. Now she’s writing this? I mean, congrats on a female writer getting work, but how much work can she realistically do and complete over the course of just a few months or even a year?
Anyway, in some ways I like Diablo, in others I think she’s highly overrated. She seems to rely on some sory of bizarre verbage for her characters, in which they speak in a way that is supposed to be cool but is just completely unrealistic for ANY type of person, even a cool person or hipster or urbanite or anybody for that matter. It’s like she’s created her own language and slang but it just isn’t funny or all that cool. It worked for Juno because that was the character. But she basically writes at least 2 characters in each of her movies as if they have Juno’s character’s voice and verbage and that to me is just unoriginal and unimpressive.
I don’t think “verbage” is a real word.
For some reason, I’d rather see the Evil Dead musical adapted over a straight on remake of the original.
When will Hollywood learn you can’t do “cult” on purpose!
@Robyn:
Actually Jennifer’s Body was “critically acclaimed” by a few voices — A.O. Scott of the New York Times wrote a thoughtful, insightful review, praising DC for successfully pulling off her conceit.
Revist Rotten Tommatoes.Com.
Thanks for the heads-up, Diablo.
Scott is a hack that is universally loathed by the industry and even his own peers. He has less credibility these days then the Governator.
Please join me in a moment of silence for the original evil dead/evil dead II. (not so much III)
Note to Sam Raimi:
How big does your yacht have to be?!
How about a new idea instead of whorlng for the studios for a dollar hiding under the mattress!
Evil dead was perfect now you’re gonna fuck it up with this short film nobody.
You’re officially a fucking dick.
Why oh why does it have to be Diablo Cody? She is the most overrated writer ever. Ugh.
excuse me everyone but if nathan kahane says diablo cody is talented, then diablo cody is talented. why just the other day nathan was telling me that the sky is purple and in five years dogs will be represented in congress, and then we rode his nathan kahane-model time machine ™ into the purple sky and, well i don’t really remember what we saw because we were so loaded on speedballs and ego, but nathan told me it was great and then he gave me that little drummer girl’s phone number
Holy Cow, you hear that? That’s the sound of a zillion dork-ass Evil Dead fanboys vomiting at the fact that Diablo Cody is writing the remake script…as if the idea of a remake wasn’t shitty enough on its own
And co-sign above re: Jennifer’s Body, what a box-office triumph
This headline makes my stomach hurt. Diablo Cody and Evil Dead should never have any type of association, whatsoever. I’m irrationally upset about this decision… why hire that overrated hack?! Her lines will stick out like sore thumbs because she tries WAY TOO HARD. Juno is annoying and pretentious and Jennifer’s Body is not worth sitting though! Tara, cancelled. What has she done to deserve this? Getting sick now…
Someone explain — what’s the thought process behind a remake of the original instead of a sequel to Army of Darkness? Surely the latter would be better received?
Shop smart! Shop S-Mart!
I’m in. Sounds like fun to me.
No Bruce Campbell as Ash, no Raimi behind the director’s chair and Diablo Cody doing the script?
Yeah I’m not even giving this the benefit of the doubt: it’ll suck ass.
Good thing Bruce has Burn Notice or I’d have to start hating him for letting this happen.
Overall I’m groaning mostly at the fact that hollywood seems to deem re-makes and re-boots a necessity for a lack of new ideas (this has all been said before) but I must add that Cody is simply “polishing” the script, probably adding in that patter that she is known for where every character sounds exactly the same (ie simply bad writing). But she isn’t writing the script. She’s just adding to it to make it shittier.
Wait, Diablo Cody is doing revisions on this?
Ok. This is bad.
VERY bad.
Let’s stop calling her Diablo and start calling her by her fucking real name, Brooke Busey. I mean, the name Diablo suggests she literally sold her soul to the devil for fame. Call her Brooke and it’ll be like making a demon face themselves in the mirror!
So you don’t want us to call her Diablo, but you want us to call you Pussy?
Guys, let’s give her a break. I mean, we know she’s just really good at taking something that already exists and tweaking it, right? “Ginger Snaps,” anyone? Let the woman do what she does best.
I think it’s interesting to note, that whilst there is a lot of talk about Diablo Cody, who is a capable, if not indulgent writer, nobody has mentioned the appointment of the director, Fede Alvarez.
His short film, Panic Attack, is an amateur effort at best, and has a ZERO story line, instead just a bunch of poorly constructed CGI robots stomping around blowing shit up.
Perhaps Raimi and Co are hoping to unearth the next Neil Blomkamp via a short film discovery, but for anyone who is interested and would like to gauge in on this debate, type if PANIC ATTACK SHORT FILM into Youtube to see the film yourself.
It’s just a bit of a worry to know that anyone these days who is making a short film about robots blowing stuff up, with no story line, is getting the tap on the shoulder from Hollywood. Transformers 48, anyone?
You know who else had no directing or writing experience to speak of at one point in his career? Sam Raimi and company before they did a little movie called Evil Dead. If Fede Alvarez is a good enough choice for Raimi to carry the Evil Dead torch to a new generation he’s good enough for me and should be for you as well. We all know, regardless of how much anyone hates on this news online we will all see this film at some point out of love for the original alone.
