EXCLUSIVE: The news is brimming with symbolism – the young actor who portrayed Harry Potter in viral online videos to step in for the actor who played the boy wizard on the big screen. I hear that Darren Criss, breakout star of Fox’s hit dramedy Glee, is poised to make his Broadway debut, succeeding Daniel Radcliffe as the lead in the Broadway musical How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying. Negotiations between Criss and the musical’s producers, Craig Zadan & Neil Meron and Broadway Across America, are expected to begin shortly after Glee co-creator/executive producer Ryan Murphy and the series’ producing studio 20th Century Fox TV gave Criss their blessing for the stint. (I hear Murphy even encouraged the actor, who made his processional stage debut at age 10, to fulfill his Broadway dream).
If a deal is made, Criss will replace Radcliffe when the Harry Potter star finishes his run on January to return to movies.
Criss will do a 3-week stint, from Jan. 3 through Jan. 22, in addition to 2 weeks of rehearsals in December, missing a total of an episode and a half of Glee. Additionally, I hear that Criss may make his feature debut opposite Kristen Wiig and Annette Bening in Imogene for American Splendor helmers Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini as the Glee producers have agreed to accommodate him for that too the same way they have let other cast members do movies during Glee production, including Lea Michele, Matthew Morrison and Dianna Agron. This caps a remarkable 8-month rise for Criss from a YouTube celebrity as the star of A Very Potter Musical and A Very Potter Sequel to a bona fide TV star with Glee and now – a Broadway leading man. How To Succeed has already been doing very well at the boxoffice, grossing over a $1 million every week, with its ticket sales going through the roof since the recent opening of the final Harry Potter movie starring Radcliffe. With his huge following, Criss’ turn could rival that. Criss emerged as the star of this year’s Glee summer tour, with his performances getting huge ovations and screams from female fans. Along with other Glee castmates, Criss is headed to Comic-Con for a panel moderated by my colleague Michael Ausiello this weekend where the upcoming 3D Glee concert movie will be showcased by clips of some of Criss’ performances. As for How to Succeed, the search continues for a permanent replacement of Radcliffe as well as an actor to succeed fellow star John Larroquette.

I need dates so I can book travel STAT.
THIS MAN IS GOING VERY FAR VERY FAST. DARREN CRISS IS HAVING A VERY VERY AMAZING YEAR. I AM HAPPY FOR HIM. HIS FIRST BROADWAY SHOW IS A HEADLINING ROLE. LUCKY SOB. GOOD LUCK BB
So meta. The face of A Very Potter Musical who owes his upstart to the Harry Potter franchise replaces Harry Potter himself? I love both Daniel and Darren, so this tickles me a lot.
I don’t believe you. I don’t believe you. You’re pulling a cruel joke. But if you’re not, please excuse me while I shriek.
If this does end up happening.. Well done, Darren, we’re so freaking proud of you man.
(P.S. Just for the record, if this isn’t real, I think you just broke a couple thousand–at least–excited hearts.)
His agents at CESD ROCK!
Wait what? Wasn’t there a rumour (a month ago or so)that Chris Colfer would succeed the role? You sure you heard that right?
Oh my god this is the greatest news I have heard since Darren being cast on Glee. Do you have a second source for this information?
Is Darren forever gonna follow Daniel Radcliffe’s footsteps?
When exactly did DRad play Blaine??
Nobody can replace Larroquette, he brought a whole new flavor to the character. May as well just shut down the show.
JFC. I hope this is a joke. Or apparently Broadway no longer cares about acting ability. How embarrasing.
Melanie Griffith in Chicago broke the glass ceiling for that a long time ago.
I love Darren as a singer but his acting leaves a lot to be desired. He’ll need some acting lessons if he’s going to play scenes next to those actresses.
I can’t agree with you more
If this is real, can he just leave Glee for good?
I agree with this comment.
interesting its only a 3 week run…
I imagine it’s a three-week run because he has to get back to Glee. Unfortunate, that, because I’d love for him to leave Glee permanently.
I don’t know what the people involved with “How to Succeed” were thinking. Darren Criss is nowhere near being a Broadway-caliber actor.
Um, unless you think you know broadway even better than the lovely Ms. Lea Salonga, I’d back off if I were you. She herself said Darren would be amazing on broadway in an interview- even SHE’S promoting him in her own interview.
He also happens to be fantastic on glee.
So.
The Chicago revival proved (cannot say it present tense because their choices the last few years have been a joke) that stunt casting can be short engagements and very profitable.
They should let him stay on permanently so I no longer have to see his painfully bad acting on Glee.
Enjoy season 3
Oh my goodness. It makes me teary to think of how FAR he’s come and how his talent shall be SO appreciated.
I feel so crazily proud to have been a fan for quite a while now and after seeing him twice live, I feel priviledged to follow Darren’s career and watch people recognise how kick ass he truly is.
If this is true, I’m so excited!
Oh, Meggie … please get a life! Yes, Darren Criss is talented, but do consider just how pitiful your hero-worship sounds. Get out and live, girl!!
I’m sorry, but admiring an actor/singer who many fans have appreciated long before his turn at ‘stardom’ hardly constitutes not having a life. Darren is a wonderful, down-to-earth guy who is truly deserving of this opportunity.
Here’s hoping Darren is successful and swiftly written off Glee.
If he’s successful, Fox is just going to want to keep him around more.
shoot man. seems like the darren haters have found the comment section and have started their rampage. darren criss is a wonderful actor who holds his own against the AMAZING colfer..and he’s a total ham so broadway work would be great for him.
if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say it at all. some people waste all their time being negative when there is so much out there to be happy about.
You’re absolutely right.
But don’t let those bullies get you down. Anonymous posting always attract those in masses.
I can’t believe how far he has come in just one year. The fact alone that he’s considered for role says already so much. So proud of him!
If this is true, I’m so happy for him, he’s come so far!
He deserves this, so much.
Wow, your guys’ hate is delectable. Darren is an extremely hard-working, talented guy who deserves all the success in the whole wide world. Right now, I don’t even care if this is true or not, all this hate is so unnecessary and unwarranted. I would LOVE him to follow Daniel in this (yes guys, FOLLOW not REPLACE.. Dan is leaving anyways), but if he isn’t, sorry to break your guys’ hearts, but he isn’t leaving Glee, because, much to your dismay, his popularity was immense and his talent was shown through. You guys can have your opinions and not like him, whatever, just don’t be mean. It’s uncool.
If Darren Criss leaves Glee, there goes Glee.
LOL! Glee existed with wild popularity without him for a season and a half. I think the show will be all right if a character whose sole purpose is to pop up and sing a song leaves.
Sure everyone loves the characters but a lot of people who have been following from the beginning or at least the first season are incredibly attached to them (that’s why everyone hates The Glee Project) but some were bored and hated the direction it was taking I’ve seen many statements like this who say that the Kurt storyline is the only reason they continue to watch. Blaine is an bland character yes, but Darren is an amazing actor. Youtube Little White Lie and try to tell me he wasn’t FLAWLESS in episode 5. Or those few scenes in Eastwick and Cold Case.
3 WEEK ENGAGEMENT. Ryan Murphy has even encouraged him to do something like this.
I really doubt that Darren leaving Glee would really cause any real damage. Glee is mainly about Lea, Cory and Chris anyways, Darren is only there for Chris’ storyline. And quite a lot of the Glee Fandom is actually annoyed of him taking over the storylines.
But I really hope Darren doesn’t do this. He really should stay away anything Harry Potter related if he wants his career to go somewhere. No offense to Darren, he is really talented, but his performance is just going to be overshadowed and he won’t get the full jist of it. I would want him to do something completely his own so there would be no silly comparisons.
agreed with @Kitty. Darren is a good actor. He shouldn’t relate to any of his past characters or anything relate to Harry Potter anymore to go big. A great actor should go versatile. Do something new and different.
And what exactly do you think Glee is? Or his role as Blaine? How is that not new & different?
Did you not know that Darren Criss’s claim to fame was playing Harry Potter in A Very Potter Musical back in 2009? Then reprising the role in 2010 for A Very Potter Sequel?
This is one of the worst things to happen in the history of Broadway. But if it means I don’t have to suffer through his cringe-worthy acting on Glee (which already has plenty of cringe-worthy acting) then more power to him.
Everyone is leaving Glee. I am a Glee fan first and my heart has just hit the rock bottom …
