EXCLUSIVE: The Walking Dead executive producer Glen Mazzara is taking the reins of AMC’s The Walking Dead following the exit of creator/executive producer/showrunner Frank Darabont. Deadline broke the news last night that Darabont is stepping down as showrunner of the series he shepharded to the small screen, with Mazzara as a candidate to replace him. According to sources close to the hit zombie drama, Mazzara, who joined the show at the beginning of Season 2 as No. 2 to Darabont, will now indeed be the series’ new showrunner. He remains an executive producer alongside
Robert Kirkman, on whose comic the series is based, and Gale Anne Hurd. It is still unclear if Darabont will stay on and in what capacity as those conversations are still ongoing. “We hired Glen Mazzara as our Number 2 in the room,” Darabont said in a Deadline interview last month. “We consider him our head writer and he’s just a fantastic asset.” Production on Season 2 of Walking Dead has not been interrupted by the showrunner change, and the series remains on target for an Oct. 16 premiere. Mazzara has been part of The Walking Dead since Season 1 when he wrote one of the six episodes as a freelancer. The Shield alum Mazzara recently served as showrunner on the first season of Starz’s Crash and the second season of Hawthorne.

Glen Mazzara is a PHENOMENAL writer. Walking Dead is in great hands with him as Showrunner.
Seconded! Glen is terrific!
Thirdeded!
Eh. Pass.
I dunno, Crash was pretty bad.
hawthorne too
One show that became a lot better when he left and one that became even worse when he joined (as showrunner). Not sure “great hands” is how I would describe it…
It’s unfortunate that Darabont bailed on the show, but you can’t go wrong with a writer from The Shield.
Darabont was fired. He didn’t bail on anything. He had no idea this was happening.
How do you know he was fired? I haven’t heard that anywhere. Give us details!
Crash sucked. Glen is also known as a bit of a usurper in Hwood circles. I wouldn’t doubt that has something to do with this. The show was exciting before but not well written. This season seems like it might get better.
Regardless of how one feels about Mazzarra, there is no way to spin the fact that losing Darabont is a huge blow for the show. What a shame.
I think a lot of people would argue that losing Darabont is a huge win for the show. Thankfully AMC didn’t let him have his way when he wanted to fire the entire writing staff, because that would have been suicide for the show.
Go, Buzz, go!
Hawthorne was a joke- i dont blame him – i heard it was other writers who could not get it together
Frank Darabont made bunny cry.
Cool, Mazarra’s running the show. Bet he had nothing to do with that lackluster trailer for season two.
Hey, Glen: MORE MOTIVATED ZOMBIES! Maybe they can trot or lope or something. LOL
Maybe now the series will follow the comic book. The series started off alright, but the ending sucked and did not follow the comic at all.
Glen’s the man! and one of the good guys in the business. Good for him and good for AMC
Charlie Collier should be ashamed. Biggest hit in Basic Cable history and they SLASH THE BUDGET from SEASON ONE(one of the reasons Darabont was fired). The show’s ratings dwarf MAD MEN and yet they pay more for that show than WALKING DEAD. AMC owns the show, and doesn’t get the logic of putting more money into their mega hit rather than cheaping out and driving it into the ground.
No, let’s cheap out on THIS show and use that money to make more-expensive flops like HELL ON WHEELS and RUBICON.
Why the zombie fans put up with it I don’t know. Check out the teaser trailer. They’re running fom 15 zombies and hiding under 10 cars? Your cheapness is showing, Collier. Invest in this hit, asshole, stop GUTTING IT. Put money IN, and it will make you a MINT.
Do your research, folks… Budget for season 2 episodes is LESS than season 1. Less Zombies, less apocalypse, less Darabont, less viewers.
Is this true…? Why the hell AMC want to start chintzing-out on a hit show like that? To what purpose?
Very confused here.
Good riddance, Darabont. This series wouldn’t get half the critical praise it’s received if not for the beloved source material. Anyone who actually sits through an episode will be disappointed. Last season’s finale proves it.
