Liddell Entertainment and Roadside Attractions have acquired US rights to Albert Nobbs, which stars Glenn Close as a woman passing as a man in order to work and survive in 19th century Dublin. Rodrigo Garcia directed the drama, which also stars Mia Wasikowska, Aaron Johnson, Janet McTeer, Pauline Collins, Brenda Fricker, Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Brendan Gleeson. Close has a vested interest in this one: she played the character off-Broadway in the early 1980s, the script with Gabriella Prekop and John Banville marks her first screenplay credit (the story is by Istvan Szabo, adapted from the George Moore novella), and she’s a producer alongside Bonnie Curtis, Julie Lynn and Alan Moloney. The deal was announced by Mickey Liddell of Liddell Entertainment and Roadside co-presidents Howard Cohen and Eric d’Arbeloff; the companies, who partnered on the distribution of Biutiful last year, plan a fall release for Nobbs, which puts it in awards season. WestEnd is handling international sales.

Will Close finally get the Oscar she should have gotten for Fatal Attraction? Stay tuned.
she will win an OSCAR!!!!! Slow and steady wins the race!!!
I don’t know about that one, Harvey Weinstein will inevitably campaign the crap out of The Iron Lady.
Yeah, I was actually hoping for a delay in the release of Glenn’s movie because I wasn’t crazy about the possibility of her going up against Meryl come awards season. Oscar-wise, this is terrible timing for Glenn.
Meryl Streep already has 2 statuettes. After 5 noms, how Close is Glenn to her first win?
I saw what you did there.
There is room for more than one..dont be so negative
That’s great news. Glenn Close is very talented and I’m thrilled to hear that her movie is in excellent hands. I’ve read George Moore’s short story, “The Singular Life of Albert Nobbs,” and it’s wonderful. Too bad Rodrigo Garcia is such a dull director.
To be honest I’m finding it pretty hard to imagine Glenn Close winning an Oscar for playing a character who seems to have a simmilar resemblence of either Strictly Come Dancing’s bad boy Brendan Cole or Top Gear’s loudmouth Jeremy Clarkson.
When did I say Oscar? I expressed my appreciation for Ms. Close’s talent and George Moore’s short story. I don’t waste my time watching the silly show’s you’re referencing, so I have no response to the shallow remarks regarding Glenn Close’s physical appearance in the movie.
You’re a numbskull, Jezza.
Glenn Close shines in everything she does and if anyone can pull this roll off without turning it into a joke, it’s her. She’s one of the greatest actors living and continues to just do good work.
That’s glenn close in the pic??!!
That’s what I was thinking too
I hope Ms. Close will finally win her long overdue Oscar for it.
Almost looks like CONAN!
I think she looks like a mix of Rod Stewart, Robin Williams and Sting (I knew her strong jaw would come in handy one day ;D). Seriously though, Glenn Close is an amazing actress and I love anything that she does. The story also sounds compelling so it’s a WIN-WIN for me.
The original story by George Moore is fantastic, and as I recall there is a pretty off-the-wall surprise twist toward the end. I read it some years ago after I heard some literary critic somewhere call it one of the greatest stories of the 20th century. It isn’t very well known these days (in fact nearly everything by George Moore has been virtually forgotten), but it used to be reprinted in “best-of” anthologies a lot. BTW, I think the title of the story is just “Albert Nobbs,” not “The Singular Life of….”
Yes, you’re absolutely right about the title of Moore’s “Albert Nobbs.” My apologies. I was confusing it with Simone Benmussa’s play, which was an adaptation of the story. There was a terrific script floating around some time ago based on a treatment written by Close and Hungarian director Istvan Szabo, but I haven’t read any of the more recent versions (since John Banville came onboard).
Despite having read the story, the play and an early script, I still don’t entirely know what to expect from this movie.
Albert Nobbs is really a touching and beautiful story and hope this does give Ms. Close the statuette she greatly deserves.
Also looking forward to the new season of Damages on July 13th. Brilliant television.
She will win. Going ugly or changing sex always wins. Just ask Charlize Theron, Halle Berry, Hilary Swank, Nicole Kidman, Linda Hunt.
Didn’t work for Amanda Byrnes, Robin Williams, Eddie Murphy, Martin Lawrence, Tyler Perry the Wayans Brothers or even Johnny Knoxville though did it.
Yay Julie Lynn, Bonnie and Rodrigo! The most deserving of any and all success…
Everyone in the movie is AWESOME!!!!! It’s going to do SOOOO well
