Rupert Murdoch’s problems from the News Of The World phone-hacking scandal may soon cross the pond. Senate Commerce Committee Chairman Jay Rockefeller is urging U.S. officials to examine Murdoch’s newsgathering practices following revelations from the UK that raise “serious questions about whether the company has broken U.S. law.” Rockefeller says that “appropriate agencies” should “investigate to ensure that Americans have not had their privacy violated. I am concerned that the admitted phone hacking in London by the News Corp may have extended to 9/11 victims or other Americans. If they did, the consequences will be severe.”
Murdoch would be vulnerable to a charge that News Corp violated the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act if it’s proven that the company benefitted from bribes to overseas officials. One of the charges in the phone-hacking scandal is that Murdoch’s reporters frequently paid police for tips and information, including celebrities’ cell numbers.

Couldn’t happen to a nicer fellow.
U.S. officials must investigate. The rock has to be lifted and the bugs squished as they run for cover.
oh , come on . Of course they did it here too. But they won’t close him down the way they should. Hes probably greasing all their palms plenty
It would simply be foolish NOT to investigate Murdoch’s activities on this side of the pond- there’s just too much overlap in his operations.
And for all the conservatives who will claim this is a “witch hunt”- this “witch” has already ADMITTED wrongdoing… and we KNOW more dirt is on the way.If you’re smart, you’ll lead the charge to dig out that dirt, before Murdoch drags everyone he can down with him.(Remember the lesson of Watergate- “the crime is bad, but the cover-up does the REAL damage”).
If they go after Murdoch they better go after Soros who is a much bigger crook an scumbag.
And exactly what crimes has Soros committed?
Again, THIS IS NOT ABOUT IDEOLOGY- it’s about THE OPENLY ACKNOWLEDGED BREAKING OF THE LAW.
And do you REALLY want to do a direct, detailed comparison of Murdoch and Soros on the public stage? Because, seriously, Soros has no secrets- good, bad, or ugly,it’s all been dragged out and sifted through- by Fox News itself!- and they’ve never found a smoking gun.
Do you really think Murdoch would survive such scrutinty? Because the dirt has only just STARTED to come out, and it’s already looking pretty bad- heck, SOMEBODY’s going to prison, over this; it’s only a question of Who and How Long.
I hope every journalist who did this or was complicit in this is arrested. They are no better than Pellicano. Put them ALL in prison.
Well, given that it would mean Daryl Issa would be investigating the Republican News Network … no, the House won’t. But the Senate will.
You are such an idiot.
I don’t believe any investigation or prosecution of Rupert Murdoch here in the United States will occur because I do believe he has the powers that be or the people who would be responsible for such an investigation or prosecution, in his pocket. Republican politicians and right wingers just won’t let it happen.
oh, the horror!!
wait…you guys realize the NSA has been doing stuff like this for years, right? I’m no fan of Rupert or News Co., but if we’re gonna be outraged at this, there’s plenty to be pissed about with regards to our own govt, too. just sayin.
Figures the billionaire leftist scum Rockefeller is calling for this.. So, how about we investigate George Soros too – who’s blatantly anti-American and a rabid socialist too boot.
Oh right, Soros got the Boy King O elected, they’ll never investigate him
All they can do is call ideas, or people, names: “blatantly anti-American and a rabid socialist”to quote above. And? Notice they
can’t say the IDEAS are wrong but they can LABEL them wrong. “socialized medicine”, “socialist”, “communist”,”death tax” etc etc etc. To make all of this relevant- it’s the multi-billionaire (fact)
Murdoch- that spreads this poison to our shores. People can be convinced to vote against their own self interests via his methods.
If Democrats haven’t the brains or the balls to go after Murdoch – in an election year no less – then they deserve to get thrown out of office.
Not only should Murdoch be investigated, but this should be the primary reason why re-regulation of the media is an absolute necessity. If the media had been regulated, Murdoch wouldn’t have been able to get away with invading people’s privacy, and (as we saw with the deletions of a murder victim’s voicemail messages) possibly obstructing a criminal investigation by getting rid of potential evidence.
