True to his neurotic and highly insecure character on the show, Curb Your Enthusiasm creator/star Larry David has been largely puzzled by the ratings resurgence of his HBO series this season, which has been posting seven-year highs for its first three weeks on the air. His response to the weekly congratulatory emails from HBO brass has been: “What does it mean? Is it the lead-in? Is it the show?” It is probably a mix of both, but the long hiatus between Seasons 7 and 8 seems to have helped the show, which is getting some of its best reviews, while whetting viewers’ appetite, which has translated to strong ratings. Now HBO hopes to do it again, but the decision as always is entirely David’s. He is expected to address the future of Curb when he returns from vacation at the end of the summer. “We’re cautiously optimistic,” HBO’s president of programming Michael Lombardo told me today of the prospects of a ninth season of Curb. There has been an encouraging sign. “For the first time ever after this season, Larry didn’t say ‘I never want to do this again,’ ” Lombardo said. That is a promising start.

Might as well match Seinfeld’s run.
As long as Larry still has fantastic, hilarious ideas, he should continue. CURB is a great piece of television.
Please, please, please let The Social Assassin come back. This season has been great, so far.
As annoying as it is for Curb to take seasons off it definitely feels like it benefits the show… It seems like Larry David allows his creative juices to recharge instead of just putting something out because he has to… Maybe Entourage should have taken a couple of seasons off too…
Last week’s episode was one of the funniest ever. I hope the season can stay this strong.
People still watch that show? Christ, even my boring elitist liberal friends that do nothing but argue about wine stopped watching that show years ago.
Admit it, you have no “elitist liberal friends” of any kind. You’d rather spend your time politicizing the discussion about a comedy show. That’s when you’re not sniping at Tom Hanks for being a communist.
Yes, lots of people, because it’s funny. No one cares what you and your stupid friends watch, especially the good folks at HBO that air this wonderful comedy. Why people come in to these chats just to make negative comments is beyond me, if you don’t like something, don’t read and comment about it.
THEY SAID SOME DAY, EVEN STUPID PEOPLE OWN COMPUTERS !!!
Perhaps the ratings boost is due to all those real people watching the show, not some caricatures who are lucky enough to be extras in your life.
Neither I nor my husband are liberals. We LOVE Curb. You are an ass with no taste.
Since the show has gone into syndication, it’s been exposed to a larger audience. In New York, the late night lead-in is Seinfeld. I wanted the show to end with the Seinfeld reunion, but this this season has been great so far.
Yes yes and yes. The fact this is in syndication on network tv heavily and usually paired with Seinfeld likely is the cause of the significant boost.
I think you are right on the money with that assessment. The syndication of the show to TV Guide Network and WGN America have boosted exposure to people who had never really watched the show before as well as brought it back to the forefront for long-time fans.
Do you realise that ‘elitist liberal’ is an oxymoron?? Do you have many ‘progressive conservative’ friends too.
Stop using big words if you don’t know what they mean.
LOL… whoops… shouldn’t say that
Hate to tell you but there are liberal elites in this country mostly the do as I say not as I do crowd.
While I think Cash’s comment is generally off-point and needlessly political in tone, I will say that “elitist liberal” is not really an oxymoron.
100% agreed. I love the narcissism displayed in the post by Cash. Cash can’t comprehend that there’s this big wide world of people, that aren’t actually him/her, that might watch the show as well. Like a baby who thinks that a ball that rolls behind the couch no longer exists.
Cash’s comment was moronic. However, elitist liberal IS NOT an oxymoron. I know many liberals who are huge elitists.
Alas, I am glad that the raiting for season 8 are so high. I would definitely watch a 9th season of Curb.
Only an elitist liberal would think there’s no such thing as an elitist liberal.
That said, I look forward to more Curb.
I think it’s probably syndication. Curb is also one of those rare shows that has gotten better over time. Most shows start great and decline in quality as the years go on, but CYE has done the opposite.
The show’s syndication is a huge factor. Many people are just discovering CYE for the first time.
Last week’s episode “Palestinian Chicken” was an instant classic.
The sex scene with the dirty words is easily in my Top 5 favorite scenes in CYE history. So over the line. So perfect. Who knew that circumcised f*ck could still be so funny?
Palestinian Chicken was hilarious, I second the Social Assassin comin back, thats gotta happen!
A-K87,
When right wing nuts like Cash refer to “elite” liberals, they don’t mean rich people. They mean smart people. That’s the elite that they don’t like.
lol plenty of liberals are elitist you airhead…and people like rod dreher arguably fit a prog-con mold…get out more
curb hasn’t been funny since season 2…the humor really broadened and the jokes just got really repetitive…they lost me for good with the season where larry gets to screw some other chick (only hollywood…)
I tuned in for the Seinfeld season, but the problem with that season is you realize how much better the Seinfeld actors are at comedy, they completely upstaged everyone else and made them look like schmucks…yes, even Larry David was terribly upstaged
maybe it’s time for Larry to hand over the reins to his pal Jerry so we can see less formulaic neuroticism and more comedy
Mate, I don’t know how the US apply these terms but somebody who is truly a ‘Liberal’ cannot also be an ‘Elitist’.
It is of course possible for someone to be part of an economic elite and hold liberal values. There is of course a difference between being an ‘Elitist’and being a member of an elite.
An Elitist believes in the rule of an elite where a Liberal believes in a social policy advocating the freedom of the individual from draconian rule.
What the hell are FOX News teaching you gullible Americans. An ‘Elitist Liberal’ cannot exist. They are either not truly an ‘Elitist’ or not truly a ‘Liberal’
first two were not good. third episode was great. i say get rid of jb. his act is tired.
No way, Leon is comedy gold. The entire bit of business in the last season where he pretended to be Danny Duberstein to calm Michael Richards’ fears of groats disease is absolutely priceless. “I just Danny Dubersteined the fuck out of that man in there!”
it might also be the millions and millions of dollars of marketing and air time that went to the syndication run of the show in the past year – even though the show didn’t do that well ratings-wise it probably increased awareness among new viewers…who can now tune in to see the real, uncut version on HBO.
The Social Assassin episode was one of the best in the entire run of the series.
More please!
CYE is the funniest show on television, bar none. Modern Family comes close, but Curb is uncomfortably funny, while MF makes you laugh while nodding your head.
Now if I can only get Susie Essman to call me a “Fat fuck”, I’d be in heaven.
@Lance’s Mum. You will always get degrees of conservatism and degrees of liberalism.
Nobody can truly be a Progressive Conservative. You may be referring to a MODERATE Conservative who has some common held beliefs with the political left.
Nobody can truly be both an Elitist and a Liberal. Do to Americans use Oxford English Dictionaries or do you have your own. These words have meanings. It is of course possible for a Liberal to be a member of a social elite but that does not AUTOMATICALLY mean that they are Elitist.
Elitism= a belief that an elite should rule the masses.
Liberalism= a belief in the autonomy of man and advocacy of freedom of the individual.
How can these two beliefs systems truly co-exist?
