Some movie people will do anything for publicity even if they instigate an angry mob, create an unsafe situation, and need the LAPD to disperse crowds. According to our pals at KTLA.com, fans were invited via Twitter to a 6 PM music block party thrown by DJ Kaskade outside the same Hollywood location as the Mann’s Chinese Theater premiere of an indie documetary about the Electric Daisy Carnival Experience about the music festival by the same name which is attended by tens of thousands of people. But too many people showed up tonight and were turned away by security. So police were called to break up the mob consisting of hundreds of people who began fighting and throwing bottles. Some jumped on police cars, and officers responded by shooting them with bean bags. The crowd also set fire to an LAPD cruiser. Kaskade took to Twitter amid the chaos, saying that the party was over and urging people to calm down. Insomniac Inc, the organizers of the movie screening, issued a statement saying they were “disappointed that a small group of people would try to mar a private documentary screening”.
Editor-in-Chief Nikki Finke - tip her here.

I live a block from there. Helicopters have been buzzing overhead for hours. To compound the situation I think Jon Favreau is directing JKL tonight across the street.
Ya really gotta wonder what drives people who came to party to set a cop car on fire….Pack mentality? I bet some of those people, if there hadn’t been a mob, would never do such a thing…Its crazy sometimes…
So here’s the question of the day: Did Kaskade have a permit to hold aforementioned block party, and if not, should he be held financially liable for this disturbance?
THANK YOU TIM CONWAY and KFI for escorting me all the way home… and you’re absolutely right… NO TV NEWS COVERAGE!! Incredible… the ball game is on Ch 9, otherwise they would have been covering it from 8p when news coverage starts. RIOTS in Hollywood tonight at the Kodak Theatre/Graumann’s Chinese Theatre area.
I left work in W.Hlywd at 820p and had NO IDEA what was happening right in the middle of Hollywood, WHY was I INCHING MY WAY on Fountain towards LaBrea to head to the 101 north. (was listening to KOST music at work). Turned on KFI and heard immediately it was a RIOT in Hollywood that the helicopters overhead was illuminating. UGH! Traffic was terrible on Sunset over to Vine to 101 north.
The metro train station at Hollywood & Highland was closed. (finally opened apx 10p)
The Hollywood Bowl will be letting out at apx 1030p (Gladys Knight & the Pips).
Cirque du Soleil at Kodak Theatre will be letting out shortly too.
1000′s of people mobbed HOLLYWOOD BLVD and throwing bottle, fires, vandalized police cars, etc… they were trying to crash a private viewing of a documentary for ELECTRIC DAISY CARNIVAL (hey, that’s known to be a drug crazed rave held annually till last yrs in Los Angeles when a 15yr old girl died of a DRUG OVERDOSE.
So THAT’s why all those helicopters are hovering outside my window.
The most shocking part of this story is that the more than one theater full of people actually want to see this documentary.
Insomniac Productions most likely staged the entire thing. They are RAVE promoters, and very good at what they do (including, but not limited to, concealing underage overdoses at their events).
I’d say that was life imitating art, but it was a documentary that was screening. So is it life trying to imitate life, but failing? In any case, one hell of a party, eh?
Mann doesn’t own the Chinese anymore. They sold it in June. But everyone still calls it Mann’s Chinese Theatre. Old habits die hard, I guess.
No kidding….I still call it Grauman’s.
Geez Nikki get your reporting straight. You suggest Insomniac invited these hooligans. Didn’t happen. The story should have focused on the power of this one individual’s tweet. That’s something to talk about.
Day of the Locust ?
First of all Nikki, I’m a big fan of the site and you’re usually spot on. But with this, you’re sadly way off the mark. I attended the event, (with the heads of Insomniac), and let me say this for the record, this was not a “staged” event as the douchebag Nick Chaos just stated above. The blame is solely on the DJ Kaskade who tweeted he was having a block party @ around 2:30 in the afternoon. Well, all the kids off from school now had something to do so they drove down and crashed the screening. Kaskade SHOULD pay for all of the damage that was caused. In terms of the promoters, they do not need to throw a riot to get press for their movie premiere. This was a private premiere they made to showcase their event in 2010. The president of Insomniac couldn’t even get into his own premiere, how sad is that? All in all, Nikki, get the facts before you shoot out some bullshit that KCAL 9 is feeding you. This was all caused by a “tweet” by Kaskade, and has nothing to do with the promotion group. Oh, and btw Nick Chaos, stop talking about the “Rave Promoters concealing underage drug use”, because that’s bullshit. You’ve never been to one of these events obviously. Do you think people are saucing it up, doing blow, eating pills, or throwing something down their throats at a Jay Z or U2 concert? If your answer is no, then you my friend are concealing the fact that you know nothing about concerts or festivals, and have revealed yourself to be nothing more than a douchebag.
It is the responsibility of the concert goer to look after ones own health. The event, EDC in this case, and the event show runner (Insomniac) can only do so much to prevent tragedies like the ones listed above. Insomniac in cooperation with the local authorities check ID’s vigorously, pat down everyone who enters the event, have drug dogs at every entrance and free water refill stations within the event to ensure the safety of their concert goer’s.
Drug use is done by the minority but it gets the majority of the publicity. The few who choose to commit illegal acts and use drugs should be held accountable as individuals while letting the vast majority enjoy their music and fun.
