On Tuesday, our Pete Hammond posited that Glenn Close has positioned herself to be a player in the Oscar Best Actress race with her new film Albert Nobbs, which is set to premiere during the fall’s awards season. Today comes the first look at the front-runner in that race: Meryl Streep as Margaret Thatcher in the Weinstein Co’s The Iron Lady, which is due out Dec. 16.

NBC Sets Oklahoma Tornado Benefit Concert For May 29
She got ole Maggie Thatcher voice tell you that much don’t tell me alot
What a sexy trailer. H.O.T.!!!
Is it me or does the accent closely resemble that of her charracter from “Julia & Julia ” ? Glenn Close should bag this one. The lady kills in everything I’ve seen her in. Can’t understand she hasn’t won as many and more than any living actress!
Sorry, but she looks like Benny Hill doing Margaret Thatcher. I think Benny did it better.
That’s what I thought! Love Streep but she’s way too twinkly-eyed for MT. Thatcher had dead eyes.
Just give Meryl the damned Oscar now!
absolutely.
16 Oscar nomination and only 2 wins? Thats absurd
give Meryl Streep her 3rd Oscar now!
Heck yeah.
I’d pay just to see that trailer on the big screen!
What’s that I hear? The sound of raucous applause? A standing ovation? Ahhhh Meryl’s ascending the stage at the Kodak most assuredly.
Definitely a power player!
Streep = Astounding!
What’s the song in the background? I’ve heard it a bunch of places.
I think it’s Nine Inch Nails. Not sure which song though.
Nope. Turns out it’s from Clint Mansell’s soundtrack for Moon.
I also thought it was Nine Inch Nails. Went through the soundtrack for ‘The Social Network’ and the ‘With Teeth’ album desperately trying to find it. Well spotted!
use a smartphone app to find that out?…
I think it’s early to pronounce Meryl Streep as the front runner but never underestimate the marketing prowess of Harvey & Co. during awards season. It’s important not to oversell this film or Meryl’s performance. Otherwise, she may find herself an Oscar ‘bridesmaids’ once again. Speaking of “Bridesmaids,” I feel Kristen Wiig should be nominated for her very natural performance.
Wow, she looks spookily like Thatcher. But who will play Ronald Reagan?
charlie sheen’s free.
Trailer looks great. I’ve been excited to see this movie ever since I heard it was being made and that Streep was starring in it. Can’t help but wonder if the screenplay is bi-partisan because Thatcher was a very controversial politician. Looking forward to it, not just for Streep’s performance, but for the actual story as well.
Can’t wait!
She sounds like she’s doing her Julia Childe role but with an English accent — my money is on Glenn
Love Glenn Close. Good actress. But can’t compare her to Streep. Streep is her own planet. Streep is like nothing the screen has ever seen.
Hard to judge this early, but a ghastly first look. Hopefully this isn’t another overdone performance from Streep. She’s great at times, but a little overbaked in movies like Doubt especially. However, she’s bound to get nominated every time anyway, because of her reputation and the dearth of quality leading roles for women.
Brilliant teaser, and the performance looks amazing.
Fascinating that the coronation is being planned before all the pretenders to the throne are known. Just because Meryl or Glenn are good in their respective films doesn’t preclude someone else from being …dare I say it? …better. Wait until you see Viola Davis in “The Help.” If she’s not nominated there is something seriously wrong. And Rachel Weisz is no slouch in “The Whistleblower.” How about Helen Mirren and/or Jessica Chastain in “The Debt.” And who knows, maybe Robin Wright for “The Conspirator.” Or Rooney Mara could knock it out of the park in “…Dragon Tattoo.” So I think it’s a bit early to start engraving a name on the statuette just yet because it could be a good year for strong female performances.
Yeah, agreed. Add Maria Bello in Beautiful Boy to that list. She was phenomenal without any hoopla or fanfare.
Whoa Marget Thatcher Bio Pic!!!! I’m holding out to see this in IMAX 3D.
I’m a Meryl fan, but this one doesn’t strike me as her second Best Actress Oscar winner. Seems more like another nomination before she knocks it out of the park with a film version of Mother Courage or Madame Rosa.
I’m personally so sick of Meryl Streep I could wretch. She is simply the most overrated and over exposed actress who ever came down the pike.
There is no doubt Streep is top notch but she’s not nearly as good as she is supposed to be (or thinks she is) but in her defense, nobody could be. It’s simply not possible.
You have no idea what you are talking about.
Yeah, I’m sure your favorite actress, Kristen Bell, would have been a lot better in Sophie’s Choice.
…geez, what hole are you writing from? Seriously dumb post. Stick with sitcoms.
I disagree with your opinion. However, I will NOT insult you, just because you have an opposing viewpoint. Too bad a few other people around here can’t handle an opposing opinion. We’re all adults…right?
Wow, what a hero. You’re an inspiration to us all.
Just acting like an adult. Too bad you can’t do the same.
Looks like a Hollywood hit job on an extraordinary woman. Can’t wait to see “The Blue Dress” starring Streep as Hilary Clinton and her uncontrived metamorphosis from unglamorous, whiny, overbearing, spurned First Lady to senator, presidential candidate, Secretary of State… Sure it would be just as even handed as this piece of revisionist garbage will be.
You didn’t even LOOK at the clip, did you, Joe?If anything, this looks kind of…wishy-washy.
The Academy should just print Meryl Streep on the ballot automatically! As an actress, I can say she is best out there!
I love Meryl, but this looks tonally all over the place. I was looking forward to something like Helen Mirren in the Queen. Like others, i’m seeing the Julie & Julia job with campier make-up.
TONALLY ALL OVER THE PLACE? She sad two lines. TWO. The Queen was good, but it wasn’t GREAT. And as much as I admire Mirren, she has NOTHING on Streep.
How could Streep be a front-runner when no one outside of WeinCo and the filmmakers has seen the movie? I think deadline needs to un-appoint itself kingmaker. Your job is to report news, not create it by hyping whatever publicists tell you to hype.
I have no doubt Meryl will be amazing, but I am highly skeptical that the film itself will be any good. Phyllida Lloyd has a loooooooong way to go to redeem herself after Mamma Mia.
I have to give it to her – every time I watch this I just laugh in anticipation.
I only hope the film is accurate in portraying the so-called “Iron Lady,” a woman who demonstrated such an astounding lack of concern for or interest in the average citizen of the UK that they’re still suffering the ill effects of her time in office today.
She was Reagan without the charisma, but with a team of hagiographers every bit as talented as his.
I know the Brits were enormously proud of her steely nerve. Alas, she didn’t have WWII to contend with, so her steely nerve was devoted to taking what little the lower and middle class had and handing it over to the rich.
Hey, Rupert Murdoch LOVED her. ‘Nuff said.
