Looks great. See it in 2D, I beg anybody with a shred of sense. The colors looks bright and beautiful; do not pay more to dull them through sunglasses.
Agreed! It looks like Disney at least got the part of Mars only having 1/3 Earth’s gravity, allowing John Carter to be stronger than the average Martian until such time as his muscle mass starts to deteriorate (think of the astronauts aboard the ISS).
BTW, is anyone else struck by how boring the film looks? Where’s the action? Why only one green Martian? There’s no sense of danger or thrills. I’m a bit surprised that Disney didn’t have a better trailer given the hope that this would lead to a new franchise.
Why drop the “Of Mars” from the title? The book is a classic and everyone knows the true title. If they’re trying to make it a secret that he lands on Mars, well, that’s just silly. If it’s not “cool” enough, well, it’s Walt Disney Pictures which means it’s a FAMILY film, not Fast & Furious.
WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY???????
I’m not sure either. “John Carter” is just a bad, bad title.
The effects look good, not sure about the “somber music crossed with silly outfits” tone, though. I’m guessing they’ll tweak the marketing campaign a bunch of times before settling on something.
Maybe its because the last movie Disney made with “Mars” in the title didn’t do so hot.
Part of it may be to add a bit of surprise for those who are unfamiliar with the story, but I think a substantial part is that they’re trying to emphasize the Jesus metaphor (especially with the way they use the “JC” in the logo at the end of the trailer).
Glad this is finally getting made, though this trailer didn’t thrill me. But I’ll withhold judgment till I see more. Loved all those books as a kid.
UH???
i’m with you…looks stupid
Loved Kitsch on Friday Night Lights. I hope he hasn’t jumped the shark on this.
The new term is “Nuking the fridge.”
Looks generic. Maybe a tnt mini-series? And I actually don’t think many people know the title.
Gorgeous! I’m def not seeing Harry Potter anytime soon but I can’t wait to see this in the theater.
Taylor Kitsch totally brings it.
Agreed! It looks awesome!
That trailer makes no sense.
I’ll need to see more trailers BUT I’m not gonna lie, that trailer was just underwhelming for me. Looks like Disney spent a ton of money on it though.. I wonder it it under performs at the B.O like ‘Narnia: Prince Caspian’ will Disney drop it.
Like I said, I’ll need to see more trailers.
Am I the only one without a quicktime player. Thanks goodness for youtube. Now about the trailer … Is it hot (not to mention red sand) on mars? I don’t understand why he doesn’t have on a shirt. Does he have super powers or something? Just trying to figure why he is the only one capable of saving a couple of savages from invaders.
In the comics (the first of the 11-part series was published in 1917), no one actually wears clothes, so these skimpy outfits are actually a step up. He has super strength on Mars because the gravity there is weaker than Earth.
PRINCE OF PERSIA 2?
That’s the reaction the trailer (and his costume design — looks just like it!) I got from it.
Meh.
Right there with you, Doc. With 10000 BC styled costumes and some AVATAR alien tech. So far, so what.
i really hate to agree (b/c i love TK), but i must. Looks terrible and silly.
But Tim Riggins looks HOT without clothes! Hell, he looks hot even waking up in the desert fully clothed!
They made the doctor from “ER” into an action character?
Looks terrible. Music is terrible. This will be a disaster.
I agree, the music is SO wrong.
This is what i call a great trailer. It looks beautiful and doesn’t show too much of the story. Taylor Kitsch is looking really good.
This looks like junk. I like Taylor, but this is laughably bad. When is Disney gonna drop this trope of fit guys running around with ancient swords. Its like they fetishize making dogshit films.
Taylor Kotch has got to stop trying to act so much, he too dam dramatic.
The trailer is mediocre at best. Yes, it looks like a shitload of money was poured into the budget, and from what I hear the source material is great. But by cutting the film with such an ethereal song, (the Billy Corgan song from Watchmen comes to mind), it reminds me that the end product is not going to be the sum of its whole (just like Watchmen). And I agree with the previous poster who said the trailer makes no sense. And if someone can counter it, please explain it to the 75% of your audience (me included), who never heard of John Carter of Mars before this movie began development years ago.
Wow, someone who judges movies based on the tracks in the trailer. You deserve an award for being a shining example of pseudo-intellectualism. Good movies are wasted on lacking minds such as yours.
You can really hear the ambience of the sound booth that Willem Dafoe is sitting in. That’s what I hate about CGI movies, it never sounds like anyone is where they’re supposed to be.
Two questions: where are the ALIENS and why isn’t the picture RED?
Reminded me of the original STARGATE movie w Spader and Russell.
Stargate was pretty cool for the time…
This looks less so. =(
Looks dull. It looks like they dropped him in the arizona desert with some fake-looking aliens. The only action they showed was a crappy cg 20-foot jump in the air. This and the fact that it looks like the guy who played gambit (?) in the x-men movies. He was the worst part in the whole thing. Not a good look.
it is gambit…from the Wolverine movie.
Different fim…different day…and, doesn’t differ itself from all the other ‘noise’ trailers out there.
Love Stanton, but not enough to see this film…yet… based on this trailer.
For the record, I am one of the 75% not familiar with John Carter of Mars prior to the film announcement.
John Carter of Mars is perhaps Edgar Rice Burroughs’ most famous character next to Tarzan. If you never heard of the character, you probably didn’t do a whole lot of reading as a child.
As far as the trailer is concerned, so far so good. I am confident that this will be well-conceived considering that Andrew Stanton is at the helm. I am glad they went with a low-key track because a more thunderous score in the trailer would confuse it with so many other lame action-oriented CGI fantasy films. The difference here will be the story which is adapted from the work of the legendary Edgar Rice Burroughs by a man who was responsible for writing and directing Finding Nemo and WALL-E.
Stop being an elitist ass. I guarantee I did infinitely more reading than you – at any time in my life – and I am completely unfamiliar with this.
You are a jackass.
Having only heard of the original title because it had been in development for so long, I really have no idea was about until I read some of the comments. That’s Mars? Doesn’t look like it. Is this John Carter guy a superhero? This just looks REALLY strange. I’d say another trailer needs to be cut so some of us can figure out what the hell it’s all about.
