Sony Pictures has released a new and pretty intense trailer for The Ides of March, the George Clooney-directed thriller about cutthroat presidential politics that originated in Beau Willimon’s play. Clooney stars with Ryan Gosling, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Paul Giamatti. The film was just named to open the 2011 Venice Film Festival.

Like a political “Miller’s Crossing”.
Nice.
This looks like Hollywood’s last crack at trying to rehabilitate democRats as something other than the venal, greedy, power-mad, corrupt, sleazy control freaks we know they are.
Good luck with that, Clooney.
Comments like yours is what’s wrong with your country. You’re too busy insulting one another and trying to come up with cute names than actually working together to solve your problems.
The Clintidote – You nailed it. But I don’t think it’s the last crack.
People have been trying to outdo THE CANDIDATE (Ritchie / Redford) for 35 years. They haven’t, yet.
So does Ryan gosling stab George at the end? Or is that just going to be a figurative stab in the back?
I’m pretty sure Jeffrey Wright will end up being the best part of the film yet again. This guy is fantastic.
This doesn’t look very good. In fact, it looks downright dated. On the bright side, it’s not Leatherheads.
I love summer, but after seeing this trailer, fall can’t get here soon enough.
I know he’s not a household but Jeffrey Wright is in the film too. Mike forgot to mention that. On a side note, this seems dated. Especially with Obama’s impact on politics. I guess Hollywood hasn’t figured out yet that he’s in the Oval Office.
Dear Mr. Mexico, I would spend less time posting on DH and more time studying your playbook. Especially with Favre about to become your back up. One deep thigh bruise and that cell donging old coot is gonna be coming for your job like a rabid pit bull.
“Impact on politics”– you mean promising ‘change’ to get elected and then caving/compromising on his campaign promises after getting into office? Seems like the only thing ‘dated’ is the same old political game…
Jeffrey Wright, Paul Giamatti, Philip Seymour Hoffman — I’ll see this movie just watch them onscreen together.
agreed on the dated look; likely an attempted nod at ‘the candidate,’ as ‘the american’ was trying to summon a 70s/euro cinema. but this feels flat.
btw, I much prefer the original title of the source material: ‘farragut north.’
Me too, but you’d have to explain it to 98 percent of the country. It’s a Metro station, but this is not a movie about subway trains.
Its not about the assassination of Julius Caesar either.
If it was, I would have an interest in seeing it.
I miss real movies. Thank you George Clooney. At least you are still trying to make them. My wife and I will be there opening night. Good luck at Venice!
Don’t think this seems dated at all, actually. It will be interesting to see a political film that’s not solely from the candidate’s point of view, but rather sees a press secretary at the forefront of the action. Farragut North, the play on which this is based, is tremendous and I have no doubt that this will live up to the hype.
Thank you for making something I can, and will, go see. So tired of the crap out there.
Solid cast.
Not sure about the film, but this trailer will get me to keep an eye on it…could be great. At least…it is not another Super Hero film, and that is worth a few points all by itself.
Of course, after watching the debacle this week in Washington…I am not sure this subject is of much interest as it once was. Audiences may not embrace anything about power and politics.
We are living in very strange times with real live politics wearing down the public.
I keep thinking Crazy Stupid Love when I see Ryan Gosling, especially from the bedroom scene in this trailer. I used to think “Hey, it’s Ryan Gosling from The Notebook.” Not enough people saw Blue Valentine… hopefully this and Logan’s Run will get CSL Ryan out of my head. Go Ryan!
Seems like they missed a perfect opportunity to utilise the 3D technology that makes every film better!
So what’s the hook? Gosling knows Clooney has some medical problem/love child/etc., and Team Clooney is afraid Gosling will divulge it to Team Giamatti?
Looking great. Another winner from Clooney and co. Giamatti, Wright and Hoffman, ’nuff said.
I was so looking forward to this based on the premise, cast and the pedigree of the material. But they seriously need a better trailer – It has no throughline. Based on this, I’d say it’s just about some political bullshit we’ve seen before in countless films (and TV episodes).
As far as Redford comparisons go, I hope it’s more like All the President’s Men than The Candidate. Clooney and modern-day Redford are similar in that their political pet flicks are not nearly as interesting to broader audiences as they are to the men making them. Here’s hoping this one can balance entertainment with message.
