  • It looks like a Smashing Pumpkins music video. I’m in.

  • what was the deal with the incongruous music (and high volume level) throughout this trailer?

    • This is what happens when you let filmmakers be in charge of marketing decisions.

      • wrong…he has zero to do with it and does not edit the trailers.

        • It’s to bad the company that cut this trailer had to rock out with inappropriate music and waaay to many shots of Borat chasing Hugo round the train station. Looks like the movie could have a lot of potential, production values are high, terrific child actors and a cool steampunk robot… Ha!

    • I get it…but we’re still waiting for THE IRISHMAN and WOLF OF WALL ST…

  • At last! The return of Georges Melies to the big screen!

  • I can’t believe Scorcese decided to do this children’s film instead of anything else. I don’t even understand why it’s in 3d, since none of it looks like it would pop out.

He used to be the best director of all time, but not lately.

Comment by knock knock — Thursday July 14, 2011 @ 5:28pm PDT  Reply to this post
    • You didn’t like that big sweeping shot through the train station? Kind of refreshing seeing something in 3D that’s not all green screen.

Comment by David — Thursday July 14, 2011 @ 5:39pm PDT  Reply to this post
    • Yeah I guess he should only make movies with DeNiro and DiCaprio from some genre he’s defined 20 times over. Pretty sure most people would be interested in his take on any type of film – and it they aren’t it’s certainly not his problem.

Comment by Joe — Thursday July 14, 2011 @ 5:46pm PDT  Reply to this post
    • you do realize you just watched an embedded trailer on a presumably 2D, presumably small monitor right? i’m also guessing you haven’t read or even leafed through the book it’s based on or you’d understand why he did choose to direct this. and i can’t think of anything that lends itself better to 3D than melies work, not just for its physical depth but also because he was an innovator.

personally i admire scorsese for often stretching beyond his comfort zone.

Comment by kate — Thursday July 14, 2011 @ 5:57pm PDT  Reply to this post
  • That might’ve been the worst trailer I’ve seen in a long time.

Does the two-thirds of the movie consist of a chase through a fucking train station?

Jesus. I hope the film is better than this.

Love Scorsese and like that he’s doing a kids’ film, but boy, nothing in this trailer looks remotely like a Scorsese picture.

Comment by Anonymous — Thursday July 14, 2011 @ 5:48pm PDT  Reply to this post
    • Worst trailer? Really? Have you seen “Jack and Jill???”

Comment by What? — Thursday July 14, 2011 @ 9:00pm PDT  Reply to this post
    • Ditto – train station comment. Was looking for Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor to pop up in Victorian costume. The whole film looked for a reboot of Silver Streak.

  • Cool! A feel-good movie from the director of “Taxi Driver” and “Raging Bull!” AND it’s in 3D with a loud soundtrack! If there is a cameo by Jeff Goldblum this might be a PERFECT cinema experience.

Is there more than one set in this movie?

    Oh and 3-D too! Whoppee!

    • It is a 30 Seconds to Mars song. It was ripped off from the Owls of Ga’hoole trailer like the type face was ripped off from the Harry Potter. Very derivative.

    Disaster.

  • If any of you name sayers knew, Martin Scorsese likes to explorer different genres occasionally and this is one of these films. Besides, in this film he’s doing something that nobody has done in the probably the last 55 years: he made a 3D film using REAL 35mm cameras.

Comment by ixor — Thursday July 14, 2011 @ 10:56pm PDT  Reply to this post
    • Uh, NOT! This was filmed digitally with the Arriflex Alexa camera. Which, by the way, produces beautiful images. The film will look spectacular. Film is over. Bob Richardon, who never shot digitally before Hugo, is filming his current project, World War Z digitally as well. That should tell you a lot about the short future of 35mm film.

  • How can you people sit here and criticize the great MS (no snarky irony intended – the man is fucking great) for doing something completely different? To be honest this trailer didn’t move me (although I liked it much better than the scary Tin Tin trailer) but the fact that the movie is directed by MS means I’ll see it (if it scores well on the tomatometer – in the theatre, if not then on HBO). I think I can give him the benefit of the doubt because even at his worst he’s better than almost everyone.

“he used to be the best director of all time, not lately”? Are you fucking retarded? This man never needs to make another brilliant film in his life and he’d still be one of the best directors EVER.

    • Well said Movie Girl! I waited to see SHUTTER ISLAND due to mixed reviews, ok trailer, and just looking too Hollywood for Scorsese. And then when I finally saw it, I really liked it. Scorsese’s best – nope. Do I prefer his more personal films – sure. But SHUTTER was still 10 times better than most Hollywood films.

The same goes for Spike Lee. Waited to see INSIDE MAN, then really enjoyed it. Still prefer his more personal films, but will be interested in what he does with OLDBOY (a remake that doesn’t need to happen, but happy at least a talented filmmaker is directing it).

Now if Coppola would just make a great film again to redeem himself :-)

    • Movie girl, I agree with you but most of these people that posted dont know a thing, their just angry waiters and waitresses and cubicle workers that hate everything that they had nothing to do with.

      Dreamers will always hate doers.

Comment by Guy who did not watch Torchwood on Starz on Friday, July 8th — Friday July 15, 2011 @ 1:10am PDT  Reply to this post
  • I have a lot of faith in Scorsese who has never made a bland or uninteresting movie to date. Given the basic setting of this story (the turn of the century, the birth of cinema) it should be catnip for Marty and he has assembled another amazing cast and crew on this project. However, Paramount’s trailer looks generic and cookie cutter. It looks….boring. Because it’s Marty, I’m going to automatically assume that this is a case of a bad trailer for a good movie.

  • Wow,what a piece of s*** trailer. Hope the film is MUCH better cuz based on this, I wouldn’t set foot in the theater if you paid me!
