Los Angeles – The IATSE and Fremantle Media North America (FMNA), the U.S. production division of global media giant FremantleMedia, have reached a three year term agreement covering domestic programs produced for network and basic cable, it was jointly announced today by Matthew D. Loeb, International President of IATSE and Dan Goldberg, Executive Vice President of Production for FMNA.
FMNA, whose programs include “American Idol” (FOX), “America’s Got Talent” (NBC) and the upcoming “The X Factor” (FOX), which is co-produced with Simon Cowell’s Syco Television, have already been working with IA crews on a number of their shows. The new agreement establishes parameters across all programs.
“We are pleased to enter into this long-term relationship,” said Loeb in making the announcement. “This new enhanced agreement underlines our commitment to working with FremantleMedia North America on some of the biggest programming brands on television.”
“When it comes to production, we pride ourselves on a consistent high level of quality and creativity,” added Goldberg. “Members of the IA are the best at their crafts, so it only makes sense to work with them all the time.”
The IATSE is an International Union that represents members employed in the stagecraft, motion picture and television production, and trade show industries throughout the United States, its Territories, and Canada.

Does this include requiring post-production (editors, specifically) to be union? (MPEG)
No. Only on new shows (eg. X Factor).
Hooray for the WGA! What? Oh… right… they never get reality companies to sign contracts. Well then, hooray for IATSE!
The contract does include post. Editors and assistant editors on Fremantle shows’ payrolls will be covered under the contract (and thus get MPIPHP health and retirement benefits). Under the agreement, Fremantle will not enter into any new subcontracts to outsource post-production to a non-union entity.
Great job IATSE. And Motion Picture Editors Guild too (MPEG). Continued success, the union is rolling and marching on since Biggest Loser. You have done what WGA not only failed, but has no business doing. In Reality TV is EDITORS who are the real writers, EDITORS who are not getting paid as writers. Now they can get benefits and Healthcare from their IA union. WGA never could have done this because WGA represents writers (who are only “kings” in scripted TV) though in reality TV it’s Editor who is King, and “reality writers” are jealous of editors because writers have no tech skills and editors can skillfully write with picture and sound. Onward IA and MPEG Unionize more of Reality TV!
