EXCLUSIVE: Based on a 30-minute reel being shown to distributors as we speak, bidding is getting hot and heavy on The Grey, the Joe Carnahan-directed drama about an oil-drilling team struggling to survive in the wilds of Alaska after their plane crashes smack in the middle of a territorial rogue wolf pack. Liam Neeson, Dallas Roberts, James Badge Dale, Dermot Mulroney, Frank Grillo, Nonso Anozie and Joe Anderson star in the film. CAA is shopping the Scott Free-produced pic, and I’ve heard that Warner Bros, Open Road, Summit, Lionsgate, The Weinstein Company and FilmDistrict are all in the mix.
The movie’s had heat on it since CAA showed a three-minute reel right after the Cannes Film Festival. The ask is in the $8 million range minimum guarantee and a release upwards of 3000 screens and the deal will certainly be in the seven-figures based on what I’ve heard about the footage. But the bidding is complicated by one thing: the filmmakers are insisting that The Grey be released later this year. It makes sense for a cold-weather film that has a Neeson performance that could be in the Oscar mix. And the film is ready to build buzz that starts with festivals like Toronto. The complication is, several of the distributors have crowded late-year release schedules. This could give an edge to a distributor like Tom Ortenberg’s Open Road, which is looking for exactly this kind of wide-release film. I believe a deal will be made on this one quick and will keep Deadline readers posted.

This was a pretty damned good script. Can’t wait to see what it looks like on screen.
Agreed. Script was damn good. Perfect casting with Liam Neeson.
sounds like you guys read the script!
Curious why Universal is not in the mix considering they have nothing slated from early Nov through the end of the year!
I know there is a lot of Carnahan haters here (like Nikki) but he is great and I am glad he made another kickass pic after NARC. I am sure THE GREY will be great.
I’m a big Carnahan Fan. I love NARC. I like Smokin Aces and respect it for what it is. With Aces he was coming off the Mission Impossible III debacle. He was frustrated after not being able to get some of his passion projects off the ground. So he wrote the low budget studio pic Smokin Aces. Something cheap that he could get made.
Then we have A Team. Which was a for hire job. He was brought in by the scott free and the studio to get it made and get made quick. Typical 20th century Fox move.
With Grey you have a situation like Narc. Where this is his from conception. He wrote it and Directed. This was a passion project for him. I know he wrote and Directed Smokin Aces, but I don’t think that was a passion project for him as it was a job. Something he could get made. To stay in the system.
Look forward to Grey. Hopefully some studio will get behind him and his brothers White Jazz script. It’s amazing.
“I’m a big Carnahan Fan.”
I’ll bet you are. In fact, I’ll bet you’re Joe Carnahan himself. Or his brother.
“I’ll bet you’re Joe Carnahan himself. Or his brother.”
this like is so old.
“you like X? well then you MUST BE x! or his relative. or his agent. or his neighbour.”
grow up and accept other people’s opinion.
Ah, the old “pretend to be yet another commenter” ruse, so you can attack the person who is pointing out you’re Joe Carnahan.
Clever move, Joe!
JAWS in snow.
Heart pounding guilty pleasure.
Poor Joe Carnahan–after one good movie (NARC), he’s made a string of borderline of unintelligle, boring basic cable crap masquerading as films. That he effed up THE A-TEAM is the ultimate insult! Now he’s doin g a big budget knockoff on FROZEN? And we get to read the fake buzz on DH? Hah!
I’ve seen a very rough cut. Absolutely Oscar worthy. And no, I’m not a shill for Joe. The script was brilliant and the movie looks phenomenal.
Oh Joe Carnahan — I remember that youtube video where he’s insulting Nikki…
and we all remmeber Nikki started it.
Script was written for 15 year olds who like to hear people shout FUUCCKING RUNNN! Oh, and Tony, you spelled Oscar wrong… it’s Razzie.
