EXCLUSIVE: David Goyer has worked with Thomas Tull’s Legendary Pictures on both Chris Nolan’s Batman trilogy and the new Superman reboot Man Of Steel. Now the in-demand writer will pen the screenplay, from a draft written by David Callaham, for Legendary Pictures’ new version of Godzilla. The project will fall under Legendary’s overall
agreement with Warner Bros while Toho Company, which own the rights to the oversized reptile, will distribute the film in Japan. Toho’s Godzilla franchise boasts one of the most widely recognized film creatures worldwide, resulting in a series of books, television programs, video games and more than 25 films worldwide. Legendary intends to approach the film and its characters in the most authentic manner possible and was smart to get a pro like Goyer on board so early in the process since he has so much experience creating franchises. Of course, Sony Pictures in 1998 tried to jumpstart a Godzilla franchise and that disappointed. And the first Godzilla movie came out in 1954 which was an indictment of nuclear wweaponry. Gareth Edwards is attached to direct the Legendary project. Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni will produce on behalf of Legendary. Goyer is repped by CAA.

you put david goyer in a room with chris nolan and the result are genius.
you put david goyer in a room alone and the results are garbage. blade? flash forward? unborn? jumper? his draft of ghost rider?
not a cynic, but just do not get his continued appeal.
For someone who calls themself “anti-hater”, you sure like to spew some venim. You may want to look up some definitions in between critiques of Goyer’s work…
You talk like the final draft of Ghostrider was any better…which is hilarious.
put David Goyer in a room and the results are blade, flash forward, unborn, jumper, ghost rider, dark knight, godzilla, etc.
put you in a room and get…a snarky post on deadline
yuk yuk yuk…i don’t get paid millions for snarky posts but he continues to get paid millions for very average solo efforts. there are plenty of better screenwriters out there who could tackle this project.
just b/c you don’t like the tone of the comment doesn’t mean it’s inherently untrue.
both “ghost writer” scripts were atrocious. but his was so bad they didn’t even go forward with it. that says a whole lot considering what they did go forward with.
“better screenwriters” as in you?
i think that’s where this is headed
i was thinking the same thing. Goyer is a hack without NOLAN…i.e terminator salvation….enough said
Wait, you are attacking Blade? That was the first faithful comic book movie and helped kick off so many of marvels best. I can’t believe anyone would knock it as being sub par.
One more remake. Can’t people do anything new???????????
Sad!
“the most authentic manner possible”
What is the “most authentic manner” to tackle the story of Godzilla?
“most authentic manner” meaning all in Japanese and all Japanese actors.
Ha! Funniest post I’ve read all week.
Does this mean guys in rubber suits and foreign actors being badly dubbed?
Then again, it’d be more fun than most of Goyer’s solo work!
I don’t know about bad dubbing since there are plenty of talented Japanese actors out there who speak English but yes I would say guys in rubber suits are a must.
As a fan of the Godzilla franchise, I own all 28 Japanese films plus the 1998 American one, part of what I and other fans love about this series are the traditional effects. The Japanese have been using men in monster suits for film and TV since 1954 up until today and its never gotten old. Americans should try and take a break from all this fake 3D CGI and get back to some special effects that actually exist in the third dimension.
I don’t own all 28, but I do have most, but I’ve got to disagree. I think the appearance of Godzilla in Always Sunset on Third Street 2 shows what can be done with a CGI Godzilla. Even Toho used CGI in several of the recent ones. You can do good stuff with men in suits — see Alien, but the CGI work Legendary has gotten in their movies has been excellent. I’m hoping for a really scary Godzilla, and the suit versions won’t cut it nowadays. I could go for maybe a big foot stomping a miniature could be fun – something missing from the ’98 film – which was not that scary.
Another rehash. Is ANYTHING original anymore?
I guess I’m okay if Helena Bonham Carter plays a scientist or the girl or something, but please no Johnny Depp or Tim Burton anywhere near the project.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!
Gareth Edwards really impressed me with his film “Monsters” and I think Goyer’s track record with genre material is as solid as anyone’s. This could really be something.
Was there anyone, anyone at all, clamoring for another remake of this series?
nope
Yeah. I am. Dick!
So much original material out there…
The problem lies where studios take a chance on something new and butcher the material and end up with a trash film. Then it’s back to remakes, sequels and prequels..
This is awesome! David Goyer is gonna do an awesome job! He’s gonna bring us a bad ass Godzilla.
A reminder: “Gojira” was made as a response to the Bomb; it wasn’t supposed to BE the bomb.
WOKKA WOKKA! Love it.
Ok, this is not needed, not necessary and, like the 1998 version–and the legendary character–is sure to be a disaster. Spend your money on original material, fergodsakes. This is so damn boring.
Wasn’t “Cloverfield” already the most “authentic” version of Godzilla?
Until assholes stop paying to see shit like Transformers 3, this kind of garbage is the norm.
This is going to make Transformers look like a masterpiece.
Two words: Blade Trinity
At least it’s not Michael Bay.
Dear God… please don’t make Godzilla into an aluminum iguana.
Finally, great dialogue from Godzilla; been unintelligible so far. Goyer will deliver on this no doubt.
I hope they do a great job with this. Love the Akira Ifukube score on the first film!
I think the fact is, a Godzilla movie is gonna sell regardless because all the young kids and teens love a giant monster movie, i was excited about when it came out in 98.
I bet 15 years from now they’ll make another one
Smartest move Legendary has made on this property. Goyer’s solid. Everyone bags on Blade: Trinity for no reason beyond Wesley’s sabotaging of that film because he wasn’t the focus…. the dialogue was tight and funny as hell. He’s a great writer. Maybe not a director. But a damn fine writer. Hopefully Goyer will BURN whatever Callaham has done on this and start fresh.
Goyer is a great choice and I know his film will rock. Unlike “Antihater”, I happen to remember that BLADE was Marvel’s first film hit–a good, disturbing horror/superhero film– and set up the importannce of the Marvel Studio paying attention to B-list characters, which led to IEON MAN. Also, a lot of BLADE turned up two years later in The Wachowskis’ MATRUX, including the Bullet time.
As a re-booter on Batman, Goyer has shown he can fix something, even after it was mangled by Joel Schumacher. JUMPER was fun, too.
Poor David Callaham — always a bridesmaid, never a bride.
Well as a Godzilla-phile since I was a kid (now 31), I have seen and own all the movies, the spinoffs, countless toys, merchandise, etc. and I HATED the American atrocity that came out in 1998…enough time has passed since that movie and now I feel that I am willing to give American another chance to get it right…Toho has been doing it right for over 50 years…surely with our technology we can get a Godzilla that LOOKS like the Japanese one…only a few qualities MUST exist: he must be nearly indestructible (tanks, planes, etc. bounce off), he must have a similar and recognizable Japanese Big G design (example any of the 1990s Godzilla films for design reference), the roar must be the same, his spines must glow blue, and of course shoot the blue radioactive beam….beyond that, get creative
This could be interesting if made modern. Use the earthquake/tsunami/nuclear meltdown that recently happened in Japan to create the new Godzilla instead of rehashing bomb dropping scenarios.
yeaahhhhh, i personally think thts a great idea, but not enough time has passed yet, its still very touchy and would be in very bad taste espiacly if coming from america, i think ’98 was a decent monster flick, but hate fact tht they called it godzilla, and for tht reason, im still wondering why TOHO is giving us another shot, they should just keep doing their thing and leave us as much out of it as they can, but if america pulls off most of if not all of godzilla’s trademarks, then i could care less about what they do to it, as long as they play more homage and dont make it a giant iguana tht doesnt even blow fire.
I find myself jealous of Mr. Goyer. As an amateur screenwriter who routinely begs for anything of mine to be read anywhere, I think it must be nice for a studio to say,”We have a shit idea, and a shit script! Please help us! Here’s money!”. If they said that to me….yeah I’d write it. So hat’s off to Goyer. He nabbed something fun and probably easy. I know the paycheck will be. *sigh* I wish it was me.
