Rebekah Brooks Resigns As CEO Of News International
This is huge. Hinton has been one of Rupert Murdoch’s closest lieutenants for 52 years in Australia, the UK and the U.S. But he ran News International during the anything-goes years when the News Of The World phone hacking took place. Hinton says that he didn’t know what was going on under his watch: “That I was ignorant of what apparently happened is irrelevant and in the circumstances I feel it is proper for me to resign from News Corp. and apologize to those hurt by the actions of News of the World.” Murdoch — who rewarded Hinton in 2007 by putting him in charge of Dow Jones, owner of The Wall Street Journal – says the resignation is “a matter of much sadness to me.”
New York, NY, July 15, 2011 – News Corporation today announced the resignation of Les Hinton, Chief Executive Officer of Dow Jones & Company and Publisher of The Wall Street Journal, effective immediately. Mr. Hinton, a 52-year veteran of News Corporation, has led Dow Jones since December, 2007.
“Les and I have been on a remarkable journey together for more than 52 years. That this passage has come to an unexpected end, professionally, not personally, is a matter of much sadness to me,” commented Rupert Murdoch, Chairman and CEO of News Corporation. “On this difficult day we should appreciate that his extraordinary work has provided a platform for the future success of Dow Jones. And his great contribution to News Corporation over more than five decades has enhanced innumerable lives, whether those of employees hired by him or of readers better informed because of him. News Corporation is not Rupert Murdoch. It is the collective creativity and effort of many thousands of people around the world, and few individuals have given more to this Company than Les Hinton.”
Mr. Hinton commented, “I have watched with sorrow from New York as the News of the World story has unfolded. I have seen hundreds of news reports of both actual and alleged misconduct during the time I was executive chairman of News International and responsible for the company. The pain caused to innocent people is unimaginable. That I was ignorant of what apparently happened is irrelevant and in the circumstances I feel it is proper for me to resign from News Corp. and apologize to those hurt by the actions of News of the World.”
“When I left News International in December 2007, I believed that the rotten element at the News of the World had been eliminated; that important lessons had been learned; and that journalistic integrity was restored,” he continued. “My testimonies before the Culture Media and Sport Select Committee were given honestly. When I appeared before the Committee in March 2007, I expressed the belief that Clive Goodman had acted alone, but made clear our investigation was continuing. In September 2009, I told the Committee there had never been any evidence delivered to me that suggested the conduct had spread beyond one journalist. If others had evidence that wrongdoing went further, I was not told about it.”
“Finally, I want to express my gratitude to Rupert for a wonderful working life. My admiration and respect for him are unbounded. He has built a magnificent business since I first joined 52 years ago and it has been an honor making my contribution.”
During Mr. Hinton’s tenure at Dow Jones, The Wall Street Journal has become the number one newspaper in the U.S. He has directed initiatives that have expanded the Journal’s scope of coverage, including Greater New York and lifestyle offerings such as WSJ Weekend and WSJ. magazine. On the digital side, WSJ.com has 9.99 million unique visitors in December, 2007. Last month the site had 32.75 million, while the Journal’s iPad app has become the standard for the industry. He also managed the extension of business-to-business products from Dow Jones Newswires and Factiva.
Previously, Mr. Hinton served for 12 years as Executive Chairman of News International, News Corporation’s U.K. newspaper unit. Earlier, he spent 20 years working in the U.S., first as a correspondent for the Company’s newspapers in the U.K. and Australia and later in a series of senior management positions at News Corp.’s publishing and television business units. He was also President and Chief Executive of News America Publishing, responsible for the Company’s U.S. publishing operations, and Chairman and Chief Executive of Fox Televisions. Mr. Hinton became a U.S. citizen in 1985.
Following Mr. Hinton’s departure, Dow Jones President Todd Larsen will report to News Corporation Deputy Chairman, President and COO Chase Carey.

seems like no stone will be unturned… except for the cornerstone that is.
According to Nick Davies, the Guardian reporter who broke the story there is a lot more to come that the media arent allowed to report just yet due to the ongoing police investigation. It’ll come out soon enough though.
This is going to make one helluva movie! Will Fox retain the movie rights? LOL
Who will be cast as Rupert or Les Hinton? Some have already suggested Nicole Kidman as Brooks.
I’m just praying that this brings down Fox News too.
I LOVE THIS! Murdoch… the man who just said in his Wall Street Journal that he was “…getting annoyed by all this…” Well, maybe it finally hit home that this isn’t a trivality. I’m sure the company News Corp has hired for damage control has finally penetrated that arrogent, thick, skull of his that this scandal is as Nikki and her staff report, Huge and potentially Destabilizing. Maybe his faux appologizing to the family of the murdered girl and all these ultra high level resignations have gotten through to him and his dick of a son, James. Hey – it’s been reported all over the British newspapers that Murdoch’s own daughter said that Rebekah Brooks “…fucked the company!” What else does old man Murdoch need to hear?
I am enjoying how this plays out. Quoting Will Smith in INDEPENDENCE DAY, “Payback’s a bitch, isn’t it?” This is what one gets from stepping on UK’s politicians & public . . .
house of cards…
John Hurt needs to play Rupert Murdoch ASAP.
Wow. How the mighty has fallen. This boot for Hinton clearly signals that Murdoch is trying to protect the crown jewel of his shuddering media empire — the once august Wall Street Journal. I can only imagine what shoe has yet to drop. Amazing. (Note to the kids: this is where unbridled arrogance gets you! And Murdoch’s cup runneth over!)
anyone who thinks this will bring down Fox News is smoking too much pot. Circulation for WSJ has only increased and Fox News is the king of ratings. News corp is stronger without the acquisition. News Corp’s assets are valuef the highest in the industry. There is no wat around it. Now lets wait for all the deranged haters to attack this post. It will be entertaining as they incapable of providing facts to support their arguments. They just repeat shit they hear.
The last time seconds in command of a major criminal enterprise were sacrificed like this, wasn’t Bill Clinton feeding one cabinet secretary after another to that panty-sniffing Republican Special Prosecutor, Ken Starr. Nope. The closet you get to Rupert Murdoch sacrificing Les Hinton and Rebecca Brooks is when President Nixon served up his top two aids: Ehrlichman and Haldeman.
But anyone who thinks the Obama Administration will see anything through, much less the prosecution of Rupert Murdoch if Murdoch authorized or had full knowledge of News of the World wire-tapping phones of 9/11 victims, or whether Murdoch tapped phones or committed other felonies during his hostile takeover of the Wall Street Journal – think again.
Plaintiff’s exhibit A: Obama’s “boys will be boys” treatment of the wrongdoers of the Bush Administration as his justification for not prosecuting Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and Rove for: 1) lying about WMD’s and illegally invading Iraq; 2) committing treason in outing a CIA agent; 3) the illegal partisan prosecutions of Democrats from sea to shining shore; 4) etc., etc., etc.
just remember if it wasn’t for news corp we wouldn’t have The Simpsons. –And the X-Files, Titanic and Avatar would never have existed.
Yeah, and Hitler was a vegetarian. I don’t think bringing us the x-files is any justification for hacking into a dead girl’s phone and I’m sure that all this is just the tip of the iceberg
rupert murdoch isn’t a vegetarian. therefore he must not be AH. –more faulty logic on your part.
rupert murdoch didn’t personally hack into anyone’s phone. neither did james murdoch. they work for the parent company. neither of them will go to jail. it’s about the people who were directly involved.
and btw. the x-files is a legendary show. it will live on as star trek has. had the simpsons been on any other network it would’ve been cancelled after it’s 5 or 6th season.
I begged the Bancroft family not to sell the WSJ to Murdoch (sent them numerous letters warning them about Murdoch and what he’d do to their masterpiece). The WSJ and Deadline New York are the only news reports I need to see. I always knew that Murdoch would screw up this paper.
