BREAKING: Lionsgate, which acquired worldwide distribution rights to the horror film The Cabin in the Woods from MGM, has set it for release on Friday, April 13, 2012. Deadline revealed in April that Lionsgate would take over distribution of the film, and the distribution date was finalized by Lionsgate Motion Picture Group president Joe Drake and Jason Constantine, president of Acquisitions and Co-productions.
This really puts an end to a horrifically long delay on a film that has a great creative pedigree and a high degree of fanboy wanna-see, and it’s probably no coincidence the date was locked in time for Comic-Con. Cloverfield writer Drew Goddard directed the film and co-wrote it with The Avengers director Joss Whedon. The film’s cast includes Chris Hemsworth, who made it before he was set to star as the title character in Marvel’s Thor. The delay has little to do with the quality of the film. It was once slated to be released by MGM on Oct. 23, 2009, but was pulled back because it was going to be converted to 3D. Then, everything froze at MGM because of the strangling debt load, and The Cabin in the Woods was among several pictures that languished. By the time the picture is released, Thor will have established Hemsworth’s star value, which will certainly help a film that also stars Richard Jenkins and Bradley Whitford.
Hemsworth plays a young professional who visits a quaint cabin in the woods with a group of friends and ends up scratching the surface of something so massive and horrific that they can only begin to fathom it as time quickly runs out.

Yes!!! The return if whedon. Double dose April
And may (the Avengers)…what have u done to deserve this wonderfulness! Hate all ya want bitches because daddy is about to have himself two months if geekgasms!
April 2012?!? Really?
Come on, they’ve been teasing since 2009. The film’s already made. Why can’t they release it sooner?
Yes, really.
Clearly you have no understanding of how this business works. For starters take a look at the 2011 and 2012 release schedules. There isn’t a good date for the film to simply plop into in this year and 2012 is already filling up. One must take into consideration the films that open before, against and after for a myriad of reasons beyond genre. Then you have to develop and initiate a marketing and publicity campaign which coordinates with talent etc.
It isn’t that simple Ricardo…
Because it got tied up in MGM’s bankruptcy proceedings. Duh.
John V. Karavitis Although I have enjoyed movies like Blair Witch Project, Cloverfield, The Fog, etc., that is, movies that keep the audience in suspense throughout the entire movie, I feel that not giving a definitive answer as to WHAT it is that everyone is scared of/running from does the audience a disservice. After a while, everyone will know to expect that the only thing that will happen in the movie is that they’ll be kept in suspense for 80 minutes, with no real conclusion. After a while, people will get tired and bored of this genre, and I think a lot sooner than producers think. John Karavitis
I dunno, not leaking the details back in 2009 is seeming like a smarter and smarter move on their part. Just think how bored everyone would be with this film if we knew what it was about.
You’ll be pleasantly surprised at how this movie plays. You’re focused on the wrong element.
It’s hard to believe this film is THAT good if it’s been on the shelf for 2 years already.
MGM was going to release it two years ago, until they filed for bankruptcy. The article describes the situation well. Read first.
Reminds me of “Cabin by the Lake” that starred Judd Nelson. Very creepy film as well.
Long live redneck zombies!
Love Richard Jenkins and Bradley Whitford is fun to watch. Jesse Williams from Grey’s is in this and probably who i’m most excited about seeing in this cast honestly. Joss rarely disappoints, but this wait time is getting ridiculous.
Great news. About time.
@John K– what’s your deal man? All of your posts make zero sense. Especially this one. Horror is one of the oldest film genres man. It will never fade away. Get a clue & quit writing your name everywhere. Bansky out.
Captain Awesome, genres come and go, and you’ve got to admit that even the zombie thing has been done to death. Also, I’m not fond of the fact that Hollywood seems to have a fetish for re-makes of old classics. Sometimes, movies that focus on the story always seem to beat stories that rely on special effects. Just my two cents. John V. Karavitis
Is your name John V. Karavitis?
John V. Karavitis ^^^This guy wins. John V. Karavitis. Although I write my name everywhere cause it was the first thing I was taught to write at a young age, here it is again in case you didn’t catch it: JOHN V. KARAVITIS.
I am very pleased and yet surprised that – considering this protracted delay – there has not been any major spoilage. I hope this situation persists until the after the release .
this isn’t a few years ago… and since so many distributors have folded, a bunch of great finished films have been waiting to come out. this is just one of many… there will be more announcements soon from others.
Now, will this be a theatrical release or a DVD/Blu-ray release?
Can’t wait to see this!!! Drew Goddard is talented and cool and I’m sorry this film got caught up in the MGM mess, but I’m still excited to see it. If it’s good, it’s good. Great cast too.
