June 30 marked the deadline for TV studios to pick up the options on the casts of broadcast pilots and series whose fate was still in limbo.
Good news for fans of Fox’s midseason comedy Breaking In: The options on the series’ actors have been picked up until Nov. 15. And, in a rare move, I hear the network, Fox, has pitched in, splitting the cost of the option extension with producing studio Sony Pictures TV. Fox’s decision to cancel the Christian Slater-starring comedy after a brief midseason run was one of the biggest surprises this past upfront season.
Among the pilots left in contention for midseason, Fox’s comedies Little In Common and Family Album remain in the running for Fox’s two-hour, four-show midseason Tuesday comedy block. But both projects will undergo some tweaking as reflected in their producing studios’ decision to pick up only parts of their casts.
In the case of Rob Thomas’ single-camera comedy Little In Common, produced by WBTV, departing are two adult leads, Paula Marshall and Lombardo Boyar, as well as one of the kids. The original pilot was about three families united through their kids’ Little League sports. It centered on the Wellers (Rob Corddry, Marshall), who move from San Jose, Calif., to Austin, Texas, but find that their adjustment won’t be quite that easy considering their Latino neighbors, the Pachecos (Alana Ubach, Lombardo Boyar), have a radically different approach to child-rearing than they do, while their other new neighborhood acquaintances, the African American Burlesons (Kevin Hart, Gabrielle Union), take sports very seriously. I hear in the reworked version, Ubach’s character will be single, while Marshall and the kid will be recast.
On the single-camera Family Album, from 20th TV and 21 Laps/Adelstein Prods., picked up are three actors: the two leads (Mike O’Malley and Rachel Harris) as well as standout supporting player Rob Huebel. The project, from Joe Port and Joe Wiseman, centers on a passionate, overly enthusiastic former jock (O’Malley) who, determined to get some quality family time, embarks on a vacation with his extended family. Harris plays his wife, Huebel his brother. The project, which received an order for another pilot, is undergoing redevelopment as it is focusing on the family’s daily life as chronicled in random family photos.
Another family comedy pilot which was hot in the weeks leading to the upfronts, ABC’s Smothered, is not going forward. ABC had been high on the multicamera project starring Marcia Gay Harden, Julie White, Adam Arkin and John C. McGinley and, while it didn’t make the cut in May, the network said back then it was keeping it in midseason consieration.
Meanwhile, another multicamera half-hour pilot, CBS’ workplace Peter Knight comedy, from Sony TV, CBS Studios and Happy Madison, is very much alive for midseason after the studio picked up the options on the cast. It was one of two comedies CBS kept in contention in May. The other, the Rob Schneider sitcom, has since received an order for a new pilot and backup scripts.
On the hourlong side, the one project that had been eyed for midseason redevelopment, Fox’s Exit Strategy, is now dead after the producers determined that, even with tweaks, the project won’t be very different than the original pilot they delivered and opted to focus on new development instead.

Go Breaking In. I think I can I think I can…
Breakin In MUST be saved!!! It’s sooo funny!!!
I hope Breaking In is saved. Even if it is just for a 8-13 episode run after the first few weeks of American Idol. Or during the Christmas when nothing is on TV.
Even Fox knows they screwed up with not renewing Breaking In! Come on guys… you know you want to bring it back but dont want to make it looks like you guys messed up… We’ll forgive you. Just GIVE US BACK BREAKING IN!
So they made the Latino family a single parent home? Figures.
I know, right?
Sticking to the facts, that’s all.
Hopefully the Peter knight pilot goes threw!!! I want Michelle tranchenberg on tv. This pilot season had been good to Buffy alums!
I saw an episode of Breaking IN. I can see what they were doing with it, but I don’t think it worked overall.
SO happy to hear about Breaking In!!!
As Am I! I Was Shocked When Fox Decided To Cancel “Breaking In” After Only 7 Episodes. I Found This Series To Be Well Written, Well Acted, Extremely Humorous & Featuring A Talented Cast With Great Chemistry. I Hope That Fox Resurrects “Breaking In” So That It Can Have An Opportunity To Develop Into The Classic Sitcom That We Know It Can Become.
I’m just amazed how many clients Principato have.
Wow. Breaking In might have a chance?
First renewing Fringe, now this. If FOX keeps it up, I might only be able to bad-mouth their news network!
This is so true. Bring it back, and we’ll chalk it up to making a simple mistake. Just do the right thing and bring it back.
Glad to see little in common is still alive!
I would love to see Breaking In picked up but Fox is notorious for letting shows die a slow and painful death and my guess is it will fade off into the sunset. Hopefully I’m wrong.
Fox better do the right thing and bring back Breaking in for a Mid Season Series
I was kinda excited to see Exit Strategy. Can’t go and court Ethan Hawke for a tv show and then not pick up his show.
FOX thank you for reviewing your decision on Breaking In. This option pick up is fantastic news for all of us who love and hope to see Breaking In continue for many seasons!
Please, Fox. Please bring back Breaking In.
Too bad for Smothered, it has a promising cast. The sounds better than Work It or Man Up,I wonder what went wrong
Thank you for reporting such a good news !
I really hope Breaking In will get renewed. I don’t think FOX would still be having Breaking In in mind and leave that pickup option for mid-season if they weren’t seriously thinking about bringing it back for a 13 episode season or so in 2012. They’re right to make hat pickup option, the cast of Breaking In is amazing.
As much as I love Rob Thomas’ shows (Veronica Mars, Party Down), please don’t try to make a Modern Family rip-off. Family Album doesn’t look exciting either.
It’s safe to say the Tuesday comedy block from mid-January to late-March 2012 will revolve around Raising Hope (at 9pm perhaps) and New Girl/I Hate my Teenage Daughter if neither of them fail this fall (which I seriously doubt, I Hate my Teenage Daughter looks awful). Having another returning show (at 8pm for instance) would help building a stronger line-up, especially when it’s a very good show like Breaking In.
Last season, Breaking In was one of the very few new shows on the 4 big networks I genuinely loved, alongside Raising Hope & Outsourced for sitcoms, and The Chicago Code & The Event for dramas.
I was pretty pissed when FOX cancelled The Chicago Code and Human Target. Fortunately both their endings work as series finales, but there could have been another season, I thoroughly enjoyed the two of them.
Same for Breaking In. There was room for so much more, this show has a lot of potential. The whole cast was just perfect, the pitch is very original for a sitcom and this action/humor mix was very well done. I enjoyed all 7 episodes, and I find it amazing I’ve grown fond of Breaking In so much in such a short notice.
I hope FOX doesn’t let a potential hit slip thrugh their hands!!! Go breaking in!!!
Mixed feelings, happy for Breaking In, sad for Exit Strategy.
Breaking In is HILARIOUS!!! I was heart broken when I heard they had already cancelled after so short a run. I can’t wait to see what they think of next, my wookies!
Please, oh please dont cancel this show!!!! I’ve stated it before and I’ll state it again: Look how many NOW HIT SHOWS were almost cancelled but then turned out to be some of the greatest hits of all time: Friends and Seinfeld, just to name two…We LOVE Breaking In and promise to religiously watch it if only you’ll give it another chance…dont break our hearts…look at our faces…do you REALLY want to break all of our hearts? ?
Save Breaking In!
Breaking In was simply amazing. Best comedy I’ve seen in a long time with an all star cast. If there’s any show worth saving, it’s that one. So please, do the right thing, and save it!
GOOOOOOOOO BREAKING IN!!!!!!!!!!!! Tase yourself in the face if you DON’T renew it Fox!
