EXCLUSIVE: NBC is expanding its relationship with The Voice star Adam Levine to the scripted side. After a bidding, NBC has nabbed a single-camera comedy project, with the Maroon 5 frontman executive producing and Jake Kasdan attached to executive produce and direct. The ensemble comedy set at a karaoke bar, which has received a script commitment plus penalty, is being produced by 20th Century Fox TV and Chernin Entertainment. I hear at least three networks wanted the project, which is said to organically blend comedy with a musical element, but NBC was very aggressive, largely because of the involvement of its reality star Levine. This marks the first major NBC buy from 20th TV since the studio’s former EVP Jennifer Salke was named NBC entertainment president earlier this month.

The auspices on the project are all interconnected in a classic Hollywood case of Six Degrees of Separation. Levine and the project’s writer, Gene Hong (The Goode Family), are longtime friends (and roommates), and a karaoke bar is reportedly where their friendship started. Meanwhile, Levine’s manager Jordan Feldstein is the brother of Jonah Hill, the two went to high school together. Hong serves as a writer on Hill’s new 20th TV/Chernin-produced animated comedy for Fox Allen Gregory. Meanwhile, Kasdan’s involvement in the new comedy stems from his overall deal with 20th TV, which in turn came out of his directing stint on the pilot for Fox’s new comedy New Girl, which 20th TV also co-produces with Chernin. Kasdan serves as director/executive producer on the series starring Zooey Deschanel.

New ‘Man Of Steel’ Television Spot #6

This actually sounds like it could be fun.
And for the theme song they can just have the cast sing a bad karaoke version of the “Cheers” theme song.
Is it me, or is Kasdan slowly morhping in JJ Abrams?
great pedigree, terrible idea to do it as a half-hour. would have a much better shot of working as an hour-long. but how do you say no to Adam Levine EP’ing a show involving music? you don’t.
Jordan Hill changed his last name to Feldstein?
You probably meant to say “Jonah” and his real name is Jonah Hill Feldstein.
You mean Jonah Hill’s really a Feldstein? So he’s not Dusty Hill of ZZ Top’s son?
Take a quick look over your head brick. There goes Frank Tien’s joke flying over it.
Been hearing good stuff about this project during the bidding war. You never know, but with those involved, seems like it’s worth a shot.
One of those shows which never make it out of development stage. Idea is too niche.
Wow… good call. You’re the only person who got this right.
Adam is a great singer, but he doesn’t know a thing about producing a single-camera show. Gene has written some great pilots, but none have ever made it to series. Jake directed a great pilot in freaks and geeks, but that was a decade ago. Mediocre buy again, NBC.
Jake needs a new headshot. Picture makes him look pompous…
Adam Levine is the best single-camera comedy producer of all time.
This project is going to crush. Too much talent involved for it to be anything but a hit. No wonder every network was bidding on it.
Gene Hong is the absolute best.
People who comment on message boards are extremely influential in the industry and their opinions should be taken very seriously.
Adam is AWWSOME! I THINK IT COULD BE GREAT! I HAVE YOUR FIRST KERIOKI ‘ER BEST OF LUCK ADAM!!! WILL U STILL DO THE VOICE?
Font worry Frank. I got the joke
Gene Hong’s aight.
the horror…
Wish they would use a really awesome, real KJ, from Austin! ME!
Wait a minute…despite all of the (somewhat) familiar names in this article, doesn’t the project sound HORRIBLE? Other people must see that, right? A show about a pastime that was already a joke in he 90s. Anybody?
Whatever Adam touches seems to turn into gold. I’m looking forward to the new show. GOOD LUCK!!!
