EXCLUSIVE: Fifteen years after horror anthology Tales from the Crypt ended its seven-year-run on HBO, a new TV series based on the popular and controversial 1950s EC Comics anthology is in the works with Gil Adler, producer on the HBO Crypt series, and Andrew Cosby, co-creator of Syfy hit Eureka and co-founder of comic book publisher BOOM! Studios. The new hourlong series will neither be anthological nor related to the HBO show. “It will be an ongoing series that uses characters from the comic books in a more modern context,” Cosby said. “It’s all about continually elevating the genre, for both existing fans of the source material and mainstream audiences.” Cosby and Adler first started discussing reviving the franchise on TV and then approached Joel Eisenberg, whose company with Timothy Owens EMO Films had partnered with William M. Gaines Agent, Inc., the rightsholder of all EC-related properties, which is run by he late Crypt creator Gaines’ daughter Cathy Gaines Mifsud, to exploit those properties. After a lengthy legal process to make sure that all rights have been properly secured, the TV series project is now moving forward with William M. Gaines Agent and EMO on board. Producing are Adler, Cosby and Steven Sawalich of Articulus Entertainment. Eisenberg will executive produce, while William Gaines’ grandson Corey Mifsud will be credited as associate producer.
A detailed pitch and a bible for the new Crypt series have been completed, with producers expected to take the project out shortly. It will be pitched to broadcast networks as part of the current development cycle as well as to cable outlets. (There had been some rumblings about potential interest from HBO sister channel Cinemax, which has returned to original programming.) The producers are considering both a traditional network model and non-traditional route for the project, including fully financing the series, probably as an international co-production, before taking it to U.S. nets.

So it’s Tales from the Crypt… without the ‘tales’ part?
“A detailed pitch and a bible for the new Crypt series have been completed”
I bet that’s not true. It’s probably 3 pages full of typos and grammatical errors.
Actually, you could not be further from the truth..
Okay. I’ll bite. How do you know? You work on it? You write it?
Give me something.
Actually, just noticed the name on the post.
Gaines. Cool.
If it’s true, I’ll back off. I want this to be good, but every time I hear there is a bible and well thought out treatment, there never is.
awesome. and go Gil! Nice work sticking it to your old boss and Producer of the original series, Joel Silver!
Best news I’ve heard all day!
Just three days ago I was thinking about this series and how it should be rebooted. Funny how the universe works.
Three steps toward failure:
1. not an anthology
2. no host segments from the Cryptkeeper
3. not on HBO
Let’s remake stuff but ignore exactly why they were popular!
Nailed it.
I will reserve judgement though. This is a reboot I’d actually watch first.
“Tale-spin” is more like it. They’ll bone it.
This sounds like FRIDAY THE 13TH The Series (which, to its credit, had a couple of scary episodes, including one directed by David Cronenberg), only much, much worse. What the hell does “using characters from the comic books in a more modern context” mean in an anthology comic where the only consistent character was the Cryptkeeper?! Is he going to be hanging out with Uncle Creepy? Vampirella? This is the dumbest idea in a long, long time.
Tattoofirehornet is exactly right. An anthology series has limitless potential as long as great writers and directors are available. The original TV series is deeply beloved and well remembered. What reason is there for not just bringing it back? Is ‘weekly, non-continuous horror stories with a kickass host’ a format that should be revived? Hell yes! Does it need to be retooled or updated? No, no, no!
If you want to see what retooled Crypt looks like, check out some of the godawful Papercutz TFTC comics compared to the EC originals. Shameful.
What ongoing characters were there in the EC books are there to base this on? Outside of the 1956 series Extra!, I can’t think of any ongoing characters in the New Trend/New Direction line. Unless the new series is going to follow the Crypt Keeper, Old Witch & Vault Keeper. As funny as their rivalry was, it was a buffer between the four stories in each issue as they intro’d/ended each tale. Same formula the old show used, but with 3 Ghoul-lunatics bickering about whose stories were best, not just CK by himself.
Agreed on the awful new Crypt comics. Its worse than fan-fiction.
Still, Comic-con had some great EC news. IDW’s oversized art series will feature Wally Wood’s entire run of sci-fi strips, while Fantagraphics has an ongoing artist collection of ECs coming in 2012. Harvey Kurtzman’s war strips, Jack Davis’ horror (he covered most of the later Crypt comics), plus Al Williamson’s sci-fi and one more. Four per year.
So this is Cosby’s follow-up to getting fired 3 years ago off the show he “co-created?” Oh wait, he’s been fired from a few more things since then, including his agency.
If you don’t want to do an anthology, then why try to revamp one? Just go do your own thing and call it something different. But I guess the name of a show with an outdated formula that hasn’t been on the air for 15 years has more cache in this town than he does.
No involvement from David Giler or Walter Hill this time? Good luck.
Oh dear! We’re out of ideas already?
This is awful. This is the crud you get when the rights holders don’t understand or appreciate the property they own. I realize this is business first and foremost, but how is it a good business decision to piss all over something your potential customers have proven time and again they are willing to buy?
Tales is an anthology or it isn’t Tales.
John Kassir is the Cryptkeeper. End of story.
From the beginning, even in the original books, this franchise has and always will be too hardcore for broadcast, unless they plan to sever its balls, which they probably do.
If it’s worth doing it’s worth doing fucking right.
I’m excited about this! I grew up reading the comic and I loved the show.
Should not hold a candle to the original series, it’s still going to be better than 99% of what’s on tv now!
I’ll be DVR’ing this!!!!!

I CAN’T WAIT TO SEE THE NEW TALES FROM THE CRYPT SERIES. I HOPE THAT AFTER SEASON ONE WILL BE AVAILABLE FOR DVD SALES. IT WILL BE INTERESTED TO SEE HOW CLOSED THE SERIES WILL GET. GOOD LUCK TO THE FUTURE. YOUR TRULY CHARLES DAVID HASKELL
I know Gil and Andy. They are HUGE fans of the source material and collectors of EC. Gil produced many if not most of the original series. And William M. Gaines Agent, Inc. apparently feels confident with the project. I’m sure they all have something amazing planned. It’s in great hands, and I for one can’t wait.
Tales From The Crypt was only a success because of the power of the Executive Producers: Joel Silver, Robert Zemeckis, Walter Hill, David Giler, and Richard Donner. They were able to leverage their feature film experience to get top stars to do the series. Brad Pitt, Tom Hanks, Arnold Schwarznegger, Joe Pesci, Michael J. Fox, and many more appeared on “Tales” at the height of their careers.
No Anthology?
No Joel Silver, Bob Zemeckis, or Richard Donner?
No Crypkeeper?
This is going to be shite…
i will definately watch dvr and buy blue rays of this. guys dont forget merchandise i want a plush crypt keeper
This has got to be one of the dumbest ideas ever. What’s the point of the new Tales From The Crypt without The Cryptkeeper since he’s the main point of the Show because he’s telling stories from his crypt.
I totally agree. without the crypt keeper and it must be voiced by john kassir, the series will flounder. I will not watch a tftc show without the crypt keeper.
I got an even better idea:
Let’s revive “Family Ties”!
Only, this time it won’t be a family…it’ll be a single guy! In modern times! And he’ll be Asian! And struggle with a drug problem!
After all, EVERYONE LOVED FAMILY TIES!
Idiots.
Actually the crypt keeper will be present and john kassir is playing him…so I’m going to watch it!
So basically they have no idea what there doin
hi i cant wait to see the new series its gonna be so gud i need popcorn fa dis i been watchin dat show since i was a kid
