Hollywood arrived at the annual Allen & Co investment conference in Sun Valley today — but I don’t know why. It’ll be a showbiz snorefest. Because only ”A Conversation With Oprah Winfrey” is scheduled and no one is interested unless she comes clean about how much money she’s caused Discovery’s David Zaslav to piss away. That’s a departure from last year when showbiz came back into favor at Camp Allen because of an “Entertainment Panel” consisting of Barry Diller, Peter Chernin, Jeff Katzenberg, and Bobby Kotick (the CEO/president of Activision Blizzard). The YouTube/Twitter types will participate in “The New Breed” panel. And Bill Gates interviews Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg. Otherwise, there’s an emphasis on overseas: ”Building A Business In China” confab, “Mexico Today”, “The Middle East”, a sit-down with Jordan’s King Abdullah II (who just endorsed a Cabinet reshuffle on Saturday in the wake of scandals and resignations), a confab about the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and a how-to panel on “Managing Global Enterprises in Turbulent Times”. Also speaking will be Brigadier General Loree Sutton (the highest ranking psychiatrist in the US army), New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, and panelists for ”Managing Hyper-Growth Companies”. Gone are the Friday night dildos. Or the sandwich boards for out-of-work moguls. Gawd, Camp Allen isn’t worth covering anymore.
Editor-in-Chief Nikki Finke - tip her here.

What ???the BBQ is the best and the swans are nice to see-
No one actually shares info – you just go to be seen
it sucks getting a landing slot thats my main complaint – one year i had to circle and circle ughh
What day is the circle jerk scheduled for this year?
You’ve not heard? It’s been replaced with a daisy chain.
Personally, does anybody REALLY care about Oprah anymore?
Yes. Obama…
No Jeff Berg this year? Ari didn’t bully his way to an invitation? Bob Igar busy?
This is where Disney’s Eisner and Cap Cities/ABC’s Tom Murphy got together, imagine if that hadn’t happen, Bob Iger from ABC might not have been running Disney today, and if that hadn’t happen Pixar might not be part of Disney today, and ESPN might not be the gold mine it is to Disney today. Funny how one thing at one event can change two three or four companies forever.
What the heck is Camp Allen? Seriously. I’ve never heard of it.
I haven’t had a good Friday night dildo since the Clinton administration.
YES some of us ‘REALLY’ still care about Oprah and wish her well.
It might be worth taking into consideration that the lack of heavyweights from the industry will actually reflect negatively on the state of the industry as a whole. There is no major buzz about up and coming companies, and the biggest topic on the new media front is the rumored hulu netflix merger that would pose a threat the old school moguls. I agree that this years camp will be sleepy, but that yields either major behind the scenes quiet deals or the possibility of a mojor lack of deals…either way probably isn’t good for a majority of industrites.
Every single one of these new/social media innovations has “posed a threat to the old school moguls” yet they’re still here. And all these great new ideas have come to be without the basic question that the old players asked: HOW CAN WE GET PAID? So now, after the fact, people are scrambling to “monetize” platforms like Hulu, Facebook and Twitter after people have gotten used to using them for free. So ease up on the breathless hype. The old guys (TV networks, print media, terrestrial radio, etc.) ain’t going nowhere.
It’s just a giant party with prizes for the CEO’s who received the biggest compensation for the year. This is the first place award.
Second place goes to the executive who received the biggest severance deal after being fired. This is called the “Fail Up” award.
And, finally, the new award is the Katzenberg 3D honor. It goes to the executive who determines that the public are schmucks, and looks to find new ways to take their money for little or nothing in return.
It’s too bad there is no tie in promotion with McDonalds permitting a winner from real folks so they can experience this hallowed ground.
Third prize is a set of steak knives.
Maybe some calamity will occur that will force the participants to have to eat Chris Christie to stay alive. They’ll survive for a while. A LONG while.
God, one could only hope…
If you look at every major media deal in the last 20 years 70% had their routes at Herb Allens get together. Good deals (film and music biz, Google) and bad (AOL Time Warner). Allen is a modest, under the radar investement banker that many look to for advise. If he invites you, you go. It’s very telling seeing who is not there.
I always thought Camp Allen was a MEDIA conference. So does this mean turbulent Middle East times for Media?
Oprah WHO!!! the fact that Oprah could start her own network using someones money other
then her own is a joke . A SUCKER BORN EVERY DAY !!
Its worth going because Camp Allen pays for everything and there is nothing like seeing the July 4th ice skating show as a reward for sitting through those horrible BS speeches made by Google, yahoo, facebook founders, they share NOTHING its all just to see everyone else might be planning
you go there for the nature, hiking and it to feel like YOU ARE IN THE IN CROWD
Lots of families and kids- no girlfriends or PRESS allowed at this one
