EXCLUSIVE: Paramount Pictures will move Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol from its Dec. 16, 2011 release date to Wednesday, Dec. 21, putting the picture smack into the holiday corridor. That moves the film back from opening against Warner Bros’ Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows and Fox’s Alvin and the Chipmunks sequel. It will now open against the David Fincher-directed Sony drama The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, and be released two days before Paramount’s The Adventures of Tintin, Summit’s The Darkest Hour, Fox’s We Bought A Zoo, and FilmDistrict’s release of the Angelina Jolie-directed In The Land Of Blood And Honey.
At the same time, Paramount will soon formalize a Feb. 8, 2013 release date for One Shot, the Christopher McQuarrie-directed adaptation of the Lee Child mystery novel series that the studio hopes will launch another Cruise franchise. Cruise committed earlier this month to play Jack Reacher, a retired military policeman who wanders the country with his toothbrush, the clothes on his back and his bankbook and inadvertently gets involved in conspiracies that find him taking the side of the powerless and exploited. He often settles matters with explosive violence. For Paramount, the strategy is to replicate the winter release pattern it followed successfully on Shutter Island, the Dennis Lehane novel that was directed by Martin Scorsese and starred Leonardo DiCaprio.
I’m told that Paramount is bullish on the fourth Mission: Impossible installment, which Cruise produced with JJ Abrams. He reprises his role as Ethan Hunt for director Brad Bird, with Jeremy Renner, Paula Patton, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Anil Kapoor, Michael Nyqvist and Tom Wilkinson also starring.
Skydance Productions co-financed and produced both Cruise pictures.

I wonder what this means for it’s IMAX release, being partially shot in the format. It already had a limited week long run, before TINTIN overtakes that IMAX screens. One film or the other is getting screwed out of the format, I say that one will be TINTIN since kids don’t particularly care for the 3D glasses and MISSION, as I said before, has scenes shot with IMAX cameras in it.
That’s what I’m worried about too and it’s been pissing me off lately that films are having to duke it out for the big IMAX screens. Most recently, Cars 2 got screwed becasue Super 8 needed it’s 2 week run before TF3 and now MI:4 will probably get that same 2 week run to screw over TinTin. Since MI:4 does have the IMAX scenes it’ll be the better choice and I’m guessing the AMC “Fake” IMAX will still be able to carry TinTin so i’m sure we’ll be fine. Still, they either need to build more IMAX theaters or stop getting our hopes up. Gonna be an epic holiday season that’s for sure.
I WILL be seeing Fincher’s Dragon Tattoo interpretation (which from the trailer alone is infinitely better than the stagnant, slow paced Swedish version) than Mission Impossible 12. They’re afraid of Sherlock Holmes, but NOT afraid of Tattoo. This shall be an interesting showdown. While I’m sure Tattoo is set to be a better movie, will it make more money than MI? I hope so, but I doubt it and that makes me sad.
I agree with you. I was astounded that MI4 and Holmes were EVER scheduled for the same weekend. It was a smart business decision to move MI4.
I do think they’re underestimating the ‘Dragon Tattoo’ fanbase though. Hell, there’s sold-out bus tours in Sweden now that center around the landmarks that are discussed in these books. Of course, its R-rating will eliminate the young teen demographic that MI4 will appeal to, so there’s a dividing line right there.
I was shocked Sony put ‘Tattoo’ on the Dec release schedule, and my only conclusion for them doing so is that they’re hoping for some love from the Academy. However, when it comes to a big-budget franchise movie, I think you need to cut your loses when it comes to the awards circuit and just focus on box office. It’s not like this film needs the extra visibility that an awards nom would give them. They’re just hurting their possible financial returns because someone involved with ‘Tattoo’ is wanting the personal pleasure of a golden statuette.
It’s not a ‘smart’ decision, it’s common sense.
Stagnant slow-paced Swedish version? Seriously?
I’m sorry it didn’t have enough car chases and explosions for your inner twelve-year old, but the Swedish version was filmmaking at its best.
Tom Cruise ? Jack Reacher. No matter how hard they hope. Not physically imposing enough, not psychologically imposing enough. Casting Tom Cruise in this role is bound to alienate the books’ fans.
I like how people act like Hollywood isn’t going to factor in Tom’s height in the film. Platform shoes, boxes, camera angles and scaled down sets are all known ways of compensating for an actors height. As for Tom’s physique, the guy is ripped for 49 years old. Cut out the hype and wait for the film, I’m sure he’ll put on a good show.
Reacher is 6 foot 6, 275 pounds of solid muscle. Tom Cruise is 5’2 and weights about 145 on his heaviest day. While I’m not denying that Tom Cruise is a fantastic action hero and could play a LOT of roles, he’s just NOT Jack Reacher. The whole point of Reacher is the imposing physique which intimidates everyone around him in a different way. The only way Tom Cruise can achieve that effect is if they cast him opposite little people.
Yeah, and there are a lot of six foot six actors in Hollywood. Come on. Yes, Reacher of the books is a big guy, but the Reacher readers only comprise a SMALL portion of the people whom Cruise will draw in to this film. You act as if this is the first time Hollywood has reinterpreted a character. Do you piss and moan whenever they change key plot points? I doubt it.
Cruise will be fine. He’ll just be a different Reacher.
Chris Hemsworth would have been a much better choice to play Reacher. Tom Cruise is NOT Jack Reacher. Maybe hemsworth is a bit young, but surely it is easier to make him look 10 years older than it is to make tom cruise over a foot taller! and I understand the whole ‘he could be a different type of reacher’ idea, but then you would lose the things that made them want to recreate this character in the first place. tom cruise knocking someone out with one punch is typical hollywood action hero, but it’s been done so many times it hardly seems original. But with Reacher comes the opportunity to portray a completely new type of protagonist, and anyone that is a fan of the books will know it is wasted with Tom Cruise.
Sorry, a different Reacher means a different story. Rewrite the book.
Cruise is a fine actor but he’s not right for Reacher. I feel cheated. I want to see him walk down the sidewalk a clear head above everyone else. It’s the main thing about Jack Reacher, his size.
Absolutely RIGHT ON!!! I laughed when I read Tom Cruise would play Jack Reacher. The fellow who played Thor (Chris something)would be perfect.
As soon as I heard about a movie version of a Jack Reacher, I thought Vincent D’Onofrio could play this role.
Tom may put on a good show…but, not as Jack Reacher. Sure, the film will be written to suit Tom Cruise…and, so only the few million of us that really understand the Jack Reacher character are seriously upset.
Hey, Hollywood…great call…think short term (like 3D)…think style over substance…oh hell, if Seth Rogen can play the Green Hornet…Tom Cruise can be Jack Reacher.
Let’s hope the box office for One Shot matches the Green Hornet.
And, if this franchise takes off and they do three films…it will be fun to see a 55 year play a 6’5″…250 pound…monster of man who is roughly in his mid thirties.. There is not enough CG to make this leap of faith work.
I will NEVER pay to see this or buy another Lee Childs Reacher novel. I am so glad I have read all the Reacher novels and can maintain the great storytelling images in my mind.
Now WHY would you never buy another Reacher novel? Do you actually think Childs had any control over casting? Why would you want to punish him because of this. How about keep buying the books and don’t see the movie. No harm, no foul, and you can actually enjoy the novels.
I agree, i like Cruise’s movies but he is just so wrong for the part of Jack Reacher, like you said not physically imposing enough nothing about him fits his face is to good looking his height, well lets be honest Reacher is a lot taller and broader than Cruise. One Shot may well turn out to be a good movie Tom may well be good in it but fans of Lee Child’s books will never truly accept him in the role. For once Hollywood should have the guts to cast an unknown find someone who can act but also fits the description.
On a side note i think its a shame they’re starting with One Shot and not Killing Floor the first book in the series.
I’m a fan of the Reacher books and I have no problem with Cruise playing the part at all. Don’t try to speak for all of us. I’m just glad to see Reacher finally getting to film.
I am SO disappointed at the casting of Tom Cruise in this role. All the comments have been made. The books are so good I think the film could have supported an “Unkown” if they kept to the plot and the intellectual edge that puts Reacher ahead every time.
I totally agree. Tom Cruise playing Jack Reacher – it’s outrageous. I’m half way through reading Die Trying for the second time and already the thought of Jack Reacher being a midget is ruining the book for me. Surely Mark Valley who plas Christopher Chance in Human Target would be a more viable and realistic option.
The thought of Tom Cruise playing Jack Reacher is really devastating. Jack Reacher, not being a man of many words, surely it would be better to use a collage of John Wayne outtakes!
I agree! There is now way Tom Cruise can play Jack Reacher in any way the character actually is. It’s a big part of him to be able to walk into 4 or 5 guys and hold his own. Also, if Tom Cruise is in it, there won’t be any other major actors to collaborate with.
I was so surprised that Tom Cruise has been cast to play Jack Reacher. Jack is 6ft 4ins!!! Cruise is so short, are they going to have him acting on soap boxes. I was so disapointed with this casting. I agree with the previous comments, What a disapointment. When Ken Stott took over playing Rebus the series was great but before that the Series was dying. It is important to cast correctly. It is nothing to do with what our reader imagination cooks up as to the look of the character. If the author describes the phisycal attributes of a character then this should follow through when choosing an actor to play the part.
I agree, this is s great dissppointment and many fans will be tuned out. Lee must have been under pressure from the studios which will ruin this charector we have all come to see in a much stronger version that cruise could ever hope to become. It’s a very sad day indeed.
NO WAY. I am a huge Jack Reacher Fan, but I will NOT see this movie with midget Cruise as Reacher. To do so would forever destroy my image of Reacher and spoil any future books for me. The choice comes down to the books or see Cruise in the title role. I choose the books, and so do my friends. Cruise could never portray Jack Reacher, how sad that Lee Child has compromised this larger than life character. Choosing Tom Cruise MUST be a joke, please say it is?
Tom Cruise is 5’2″ tall. With his customary lifts in his shoes this increases to 5’7″. By judicious use of camera angles and by casting small actors and actresses in supporting roles, Tom Cruise will look just fine. Worst case scenatio, he will have to stand on a box for some scenes but the camera won’t show the box. Tom Cruise will make a great Jack Reacher.
That is sooooooo true !!!!!!! I have been a Jack Reacher fan for YEARS & my husband and I always debated on who would play Reacher. The Rock always came to mind but a short shit shrimp is totally unbelievable …… was Child drinking the koolaid or what ????
How much did Tom pay Paramount for Reacher!!!!!!?????? Tom Cruise is JUST NOT Jack Reacher. If he were the last man on earth, he still could NOT do Jack Reacher. I will NOT be going to the Reacher films if they use Tom Cruise.
Paramount should’ve skedded MI4 for a December 2nd release. It’s right after the Thanksgiving holidays, but at least it’ll have some time to itself before the other December heavyweights come.
The week after Thanksgiving is a death weekend for new movies. You have to go back to 2003 to find the last movie to open at over $20mm that weekend (ironically, it was The Last Samurai, with Cruise).
MI:4 has always felt like more of a summer film than a holiday one. Straight up action seems to get lost in the holiday season.
It could be quite bloodbath this holiday season. Some big franchise is going to have to underperform.
The James Bond movies always have been very succesful during the holidays. They usually open in November, as far as I remember, but still… Straight up action and the audiences always go to see it during the holidays.
That is a fair point about the recent Bond films. They do come out in the 2nd week of November, but that is probably is the audience Paramount was hoping for with MI:4.
Who rekons that 007 will be the final nail in Breaking Dawn’s coffin. Maybe we should start a Facebook Campaign, to ensure that.
Christmas is gonna be a blood bath. But I will be picking Fincher over MI. There’s only so much you can do with the spy genre nowadays.
Memo to studios: Cruise is ovah.
Agreed Jonny.
Sorry kids. Still love Cruise.
I am so excited for the release of MIssion Impossible Ghost Protocol! I am a huge Tom Cruise, i have grown up watching his action and romance films! My all time Favorite movie, has been The Last Samuraii, it was absolutely incredible. I admire him so much as an actor, and am excited to see that he has all those projects coming out (rock of ages and that jack reacher movie!)
Seriously one of the best actors of our time! without a doubt!
You Scientologists are so transparent…shouldn’t you be working Hollywood Blvd?
Seriously one of the best actors of our time! without a doubt!?????
you have got to be kidding.
Anyone who endorses Cruise as Reacher seriously has not read the books (including Lee Child!)
Looks badass. I’m there.
Why release the girl with the dragon tattoo during chrismas holiday?it won’t have a chance against these tentpole
holiday films.why not release it in march like fincher zodiac where it will have more breathing room?..oh,wait the twilight battle royale games is being released then, sorry.
Yes, by all means, release The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo in March, to match the Zodiac release pattern. Zodiac was only Fincher’s least successful film financially and almost entirely forgotten during the subsequent awards season.
I’d take a smart adult thriller with a built in novel and buzzed about foreign film audience over the 4th film in a spy franchise that has never had great reviews 6 days a week (and twice on Sundays).
Tattoo will be huge…look at how many copies of the book(s) have been sold? It or Tin Tin will be the film to beat this Christmas.
rooney mara’s worried agent?
lmfao!
rooney mara’s worried agent?
lmfao!
why is that funny?
rooney mara’s worried agent?
lmfao!
Ellen page should of been the girl with the dragon tattoo
or Kristen bell.
I really would have liked Ellen Page as Lisbeth anyone who has seen Hard Candy would agree. But I think Fincher made the right choice with Mara.
Probably a good move. I think Girl with the Dragon Tattoo may ultimately win out, but they would have been killed by Downey in Sherlock.
Cruise as Jack Reacher will never not be funny. I mean come on!
Looking forward to Tom’s new MI movie. It is the only movie franchise that has made the next movie better than the previous each time out. I love M:I 3 right up until the dumb ending which if re-written would have made the movie 4 stars instead of 3. That being said, this new M:I movie looks solid BUT it also looks like a remake of the 3rd movie. The scene of the beautiful girl getting out of the exotic car looks just like the 3rd movie. Also scaling a high building for no apparent reason was also done, along with the rolling auto coming at Tom. All scenes were in the previous incarnation.
I really hope Sony doesn’t push back Girl With The Dragon Tattoo
(Early 2012) now. If anything move it up a few weeks December 2nd looks clear. But maybe Sony will stick by the date, I certainly hope so. Girl was the one film I was excited for this year. The book was amazing and I can’t wait to see what Fincher and company do.
The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo is screwed.
I agree with the previous posters who say that moving M:I4 to a different date is a wise move. Judging by the trailers for both films (and I admit that trailers can be deceptive), it would appear that Sherlock Holmes 2 is the stronger of the two, and it would have clobbered M:I4 if both films were released on Dec. 16.
Also, after talking to several friends who saw both trailers at the godzilla-plex during the last two weeks, many of them were genuinely excited about seeing Sherlock Holmes 2, while reaction to M:I4 was mostly “meh”.
I’m also wondering if Warner Bros. will be showing Sherlock Holmes 2 in IMAX, now that quite a few screens will be free on the 16th of December…
alvin and the chipmunks never blink.
Paramount is releasing both Tintin and Mission: Impossible. Is one studio REALLY, seriously going to bow two of its major tentpole films in the same week?
I say move MI4 to Dec.28 against War Horse. Those will be two different Post-Christmas audiences, becuase I think the week of Christmas is already over-stuffed. I think everyone should also remember that Twilight only had ok mainstream buzz a year before it’s release but a month before it came out buzz went through the roof. I think that will also be the case with “Dragon Tattoo”. Becuase it may not be an action tentpole but as December looms it could end up getting the most buzz and even with it’s R Rating it could end up becoming the first “Harry Potter-like” franchise for adults. I think the Hangover & paranormal Activity franchise is more than enough proof yu can have a ginormous R Rated Trilogy.
The only major difference is that unlike Hangover and Paranormal Activity, Dragon Tattoo actually has a big overseas name in the form of Blond Bond Craig.
Daniel Craig might not be as bankable as you’d might hope stateside, but he is more bankable in Europe than the likes of Katie Featherson and Ed Helms combined.
Coriolanus and We Need to Talk About Kevin (ny and la only) are the only releases for december 2nd.
yes it’s normally a dead weekend but it worked for the last samurai and could work for m.i
but then what do i know !
This is a much better release date and I’m glad they didn’t go earlier — there is a lot of money to be had in those weeks of christmas and new years. If they opened earlier, they would just lose screens. I’m sorry are you not able to watch dragon tatoo and mission?????? There is really nothing else for anyone to watch during the holidays so this is great.
Why is Tom Cruise playing Jack Reacher? If I’m not mistaken, Jack Reacher is a 6’5″ blond. Alexander Skarsgard would be perfect for this role, both for his physical and acting attributes.
As far as Jack Reacher movies go, look no further than Jack Ryan movies. Expect a reboot with a different actor after one or two of them.
As for Lee Child, he’s pulling a Tom Clancy. Film producers rent his name, the principals make piles of money, eveyone’s happy.
Except the fan base and the movie-going public, of course.
i am a big reacher fan. the stories are what drive the character. i never thought matt damon would be a good jason bourne, but it worked. give cruise a chance
i wouldnt have cast little tom cruise as jack reacher sorry dont seem right
