Is this the smoking gun linking former News of the World editor Piers Morgan to the phone-hacking scandal that led to the shutdown of the veteran tabloid and has been shaking News Corp to its core? Not exactly, but it does raise some doubts about the CNN anchor’s recent statements that he knew nothing about the shoddy practices while at the helm of the British paper. In a 2009 BBC radio interview obtained by The Daily Beast, Morgan is asked about questionable newsgathering methods employed by tabloid reporters like him. “And what about this nice middle-class boy who would have to be dealing with, I mean, essentially people who rake through people’s bins for a living?” the interviewer asked Morgan. “People who tap people’s phones, people who take secret photographs .. who do all that very nasty down-in-the-gutter stuff — how did you feel about that?” Morgan’s answer: “Well, to be honest, let’s put that into perspective as well. Not a lot of that went on. … A lot of it was done by third parties, rather than the staff themselves. …That’s not to defend it, because obviously you were running the results of their work.” In response to the post, Morgan issued a statement today dismissing any accusations. “My answer was not specific to any of the numerous examples she gave, but a general observation about tabloid newspaper reporters and private investigators,” he wrote. “As I have said before, I have never hacked a phone, told anyone to hack a phone, nor to my knowledge published any story obtained from the hacking of a phone.”

Nothing shows the disconnect between the American people and its media barons than the hiring of this lightweight clown who furrows his brow in thought as he “ïnterviews one of the Khardasians. How many American kids are named Piers? Where did this guy come from? How does he even remotely represent the viewers of CNN? Larry King – for all his faults – could at least claim to represent a portion of the sensibilities of his audience.
^ LOL….agree
AMEN!
“…nor to my knowledge…” Love how he’s now changing his denial from he never published anything from an illegal source to now using the caveat “to my knowledge.” I don’t think his fancy tap dancin’ is going to save him this time around.
Double amen!
The guys a joke. They should send his ass back to merry o’le England.
Would now be a good time to remind everyone why Piers was fired from The Mirror newspaper? He knowingly published FAKE photos showing Iraqi prisoners being abused by British Army soldiers on the front page.
By publishing knowingly publishing those fakes on his front page he willingly put British troops at increased risk. If an editor in American did the same with American troops do you think that editor would EVER work again?
The truth will always out and hopefully this clown will be made to answer for his actions sooner rather than later and, fingers crossed, he’ll end up in jail.
He didn’t knowingly publish fake photos but the simple fact that they were fake and not as thoroughly checked as they ought to have been was enough to cost him his job. Especially because that was before all the real prisoner abuse scandals and everyone was appalled that anyone might accuse troops of doing such things. The fact that under Morgan’s editorship the Mirror was one of the few UK papers opposed to the Iraq War just made things even worse.
It would seem entirely possible, though not yet certain, that pretty much every newspaper editor in the UK has been involved in the “dark arts” of journalism, whether that was phone hacking or something else. Even the recent expenses scandal was based on stolen data. When Louise Bagshaw lied in parliament about the book extract, she was actually quoting a particular part of Morgan’s book in which he speculated that his own phone was being hacked a few years back.
@ Interested Observer (below) Piers Morgan was an editor at The News of The World in the 90′s – the youngest ever national newspaper editor – but was quickly offered the chance to edit The Daily Mirror and he stayed there for 8 years.
I thought he worked at the Daily Mirror, not NOTW.
Anyway: this guy is a dirtbag regardless of how involved he was in “phone tapping” (a bit different than phone hacking, fyi). I’d much rather see Nikki have his CNN job
It’s a difference without a distinction, though.
They were hacking celphone passwords to access/tap/listen to phone messages, among other things.
@Robert
Speaking as a brit: I understand your feelings entirely. That’s why you can keep him. And abuse him more. Less of a clown, more a smarmy little git.
And he’s plainly guilty, isn’t he?
he looks guilty. He came from no where and now the truth comes out.
Sounds like implausible deniability.
Piers Morgan is a embarresment for CNN, what were they thinking
I can’t understand how Piers Morgan has made it so big in the US. The man is a gutter slug. Here’s a video of the (very respected) Private Eye editor Ian Hislop talking about him on British comedy show Room 101.

Boy, do I miss “Private Eye”.
Does anyone really believe that this guy wasn’t up to his eyeballs in illegal wiretapping?
Nah, didn’t think so.
When will we learn. The media is not our friends but our controllers.
As an interviewer, this guy threw more softballs than the Women’s US National Team.
I hope he gets canned. What an embarrassment for CNN.
The person who hired him should be fired too.
It’s interesting that he keeps repeating the very closely worded defense that he has “never hacked a phone, told anyone to hack a phone, nor to my knowledge published any story obtained from the hacking of a phone.” That certainly leaves a lot of open space: Were you aware it was going on at your paper? Did you do anything to stop it? Did you fire or discipline any of the people doing it? Did you pay the people who were doing it? Did you use the information to verify stories “obtained” in other ways?
Smarmy. The perfect word to describe Piers Morgan.
Not to mention: arrogant, superficial, sycophantic, uni-dimensional and the biggest sin of all in Hollywood: BORING.
Next biggest sin: not making money. Or maybe it’s the other way around.
If he’s making money for CNN, they’ll try to keep him on through any kind of storm to boost ratings and then drop him if he’s guilty as suspected.
If he’s not making money, they’ll see if they can start making money, boost ratings, then drop him when it’s no longer tenable.
We shall see.
Please DO keep nosing into this cretin’s dark hidden corners while under the tenure of Rupert (scumbag) Murdoch.
Off topic, but relevant: The definition and epitome of IRONY: All these Tea Party / Right Wing / Conservative / Republican Hate Mongers taking their marching orders from the owner of Faux News, a rich old sleazemonger who was NOT Born in America and who made his gazillions from the worst kind of yellow bellied cowardly useless media — Tabloid Gossip Rags (using tactics which have finally come to light, aka “phone hacking”)
Go Nikki, Go Nikki!!!!
