UPDATE:
Walt Disney Pictures and Jerry Bruckheimer Films confirmed this Summer 2011 milestone: that the franchise’s fourth film Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides crossed $1 billion in global box office Saturday. The global cume through Sunday is $1,007.7B, with an estimated $774M of that coming from international and 233.7M from domestic through Sunday. This will be the second Pirates of the Caribbean film to reach $1B after 2006’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest. Rounding out the studios’ four billion-dollar earners are 2010’s Alice in Wonderland and Toy Story 3. Five of the 10 biggest films of all time are now from The Walt Disney Studios.
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is now the 8th film in history to reach the $1B threshold, the Walt Disney Studios’ 4 title to earn $1B, the 3rd Disney film in less than 18 months to gross $1B globally, and the bBiggest international opening ever, and the #3 film of all time at the international box office. It also crossed the $500M international threshold in a record-setting 14 days, and crossed the $800M global threshold in only 20 days, the second fastest ever to reach this milestone. Pic set a new industry speed record by crossing the $700M global threshold in only 16 days. It’s Disney’s biggest international release ever, and the biggest Pirates of the Caribbean installment in 58 territories as well as the highest-grossing Disney film ever released in China and Russia. It’s nearing $100M USD in Japan, where it’s been #1 for all 6 weeks of release. Whew!

It’s the least talked about phenomenon in the film game right now. How the 4th film in a franchise is far away the most popular financially. The international legs are staggering.
I think it’s officially time to call Johnny Depp the biggest movie star in the world.
Amen to that…
yes Johnny Depp Rocks..he is a awesome actor!
and to think they originally never wanted to hire Johnny Depp for the role because they hated his interpretation of Jack Sparrow. The joke’s on them now, ey?
yes, they’re not laughing all the way to the bank.
he’s box office gold. Good or bad movie , it doesn’t make a difference – people just love him.
Better than the 3rd film, but so are things i find on the bottom of my shoe.
On Terry Rossio’s birthday no less, not bad.
Amazing and v impressive. Go Disney!!!
A One Billion Dollar Flop. Ha! Eat it haters.
It’s a very weak movie, anyway.
Just because someone criticizes a film, they’re a “hater”. I hope tp God people like you don’t pay to see MY film. I would hope that my fans have a little more class and maturity to respect an opposing opinion about the film.
Pirates 5 is now unofficially official. No way Disney doesn’t green light number 5.
It just blows my mind how they can get rid of Kiera Knightly and Orlando Bloom and still have a $1 billion film. Especially after a ton of people talked about how they wouldn’t go see the fourth without those two. Well apparently that wasn’t true.
No question that this film has done enormously well internationally. But it’s a mistake to assume that a higher gross equates higher admissions. This 4th film has the benefit of the 20%+ 3-D surcharge as well as a weaker dollar. These are important factors because they directly impact a films’ ultimate financial profitability. Its hard to believe but a studio will only see about 40-45% of a films gross. So when you compare the up-front costs of several hundred million, as well as another couple hundred million to distribute and market worldwide, the ROI isn’t very appealing.
Disney makes $$ in other ways from the Pirate films…but the movies themselves are not nearly as big profit generators as the general public believes.
I know because I have worked for a public accounting firm for over 20 years and specialize in the entertainment industry. Its a much different picture from my view than that of most who read this blog….
POTC4 is such a hit BECAUSE they got rid of Bloom and Knightly`s characters and could give Depp`s Sparrow more screen time. What Internet fangirls say (that they wouldn`t see the movie without those actors) carries no weight because it isn`t what mainstream audience around the globe think. An d majority agree that those characters were deadweight and shouldn`t have bene in sequels to begin with. So it was brilliant decision not to bring them back but pair Depp and Rush instead, since they play by far the most popular characters in the series (yes, Babrossa has always been way more popular with masses than Will and Elizabeth who only had Bloom fangirl backing).
Either way, congratulations to Disney and especially Depp who is now the only actor who headlined 3 movies that crossed $1 billion and was in fact a reason why those movies were so big.
The movie lost alot of $$ BECAUSE Bloom and Knightly are not in it. POTC are not POTC without them. Only the fangirls and fandboys of Depp keep whining that Will and Elizabeth took the attention from his personage. Depp’s character is for the people who want the cheap entertainment with no thought and soul in it. Just let him make his grimaces and they are soo happy! LOL. Otherwise it’s hard to explain why they are so fond of the egoistic, treachearous, backstubbing pirate that is played by overrated actor who cares nothing but the money.
Now, imagine how much money it could have made if Bloom and Knightly were back. It would be 3 billions already.
As for Depp’s “gold”: the only movies that hit the jackpot with him were POTC and Alice, i. e., the movies that would be successful in a BO without him too. He was a BO poison for years. The POTC original trilogy has a huge appeal due to the genre, the great job done by Bloom, Rush, Nighy, Davenport, Knightly. It wasn’t “Depp’s movie.” The producer put alot of efforts to promote Depp before Sparrow became as famous as it is now. The public is easy to brainwash. And th public wants entertainment. No brainer, really.
Don’t forget that it made the most money in the countries that have no good cinema (no offense to the people of these countries!). Russia used to make great movies. Now they have only alot of people who want to see the movies that will entertain but their own cinema is dead. China has its specifics to which I wouldn’t want to go now. Japan went through the horrible tragedy and it’s normal that people wnat to escape in the movie world for couple of hours. Add to this the inflation rates, the 3D-ticket’s prices and you will see that in fact, the less people went to see On Stranger Tides. Domestic BO IS a huge failure for
The quality of the movie was below poor. Only Rush was good as usual. Depp was boring and bored with his fat paycheck and he doesn’t care about his character that acted OOC. He became a tout-boy for Bruckheimer and his pockets. It’s sad that the franchise that I used to love is ruined now. I still love the first 2 movies though.
I AM SO HAPPY FOR JOHNNY DEPP & PENELOPE CRUZ-THIS FRANCHISE IS A LOT OF FUN. HERE’S LOOKING FORWARD TO THE NEXT FILM!
Are you sure? Pic set a new industry speed record by crossing the $700M global threshold in only 16 days.
Avatar was at 742M in 15 days.
Congrats to Depp & Disney—so well deserved! Once again critics are out of touch with what moviegoers enjoy. Capt. Jack is an iconic film character & I hope they do many more Pirate films w/Depp in them. On Stranger Tides was witty, fun & changed the way we think of mermaids—they sure weren’t of the Little Mermaid variety! This was a FUN movie that was also WELL ACTED which I can’t say for Hangover 2, T3, Super 8, etc. Amazes me that critics just can’t wait to see Depp fail—newsflash-millions of people love the Pirates films. I hope we’ll see more in the future!
wtf dude? why do you have super 8 in your list of films with bad acting? have you even seen it? the entire cast (especially the kids) did amazing job!
Johnny now has 3 films that have reached 1 billion, and another one just missed. His overseas appeal is amazing.
And yet I’m sure, on the official Disney books, the film is still losing money.
Which books? The movie studio department or the merchandising? Because you know they’ve made the movie’s budget back in merch alone.
This. Franchise. Will. Never. Die.
I thought this film was good, but I’m pretty sure the 3D ticket prices are a huge factor… This will be the 4th 3D film that made $1 billion in the past 2 years, which probably means not only will there be more Pirates movies, but 3D isn’t going anywhere any time soon…. :/
Yup, WHOOPS – sorry haters. So much for 3D on the downturn. Can’t ignore the international audience, unfortunately for the cynics and doomsayer “experts”. Maybe you all should shut your lips and learn.
and people thought there wouldn’t be a POTC 5, lol. I just hope that the rest of the attraction movies Disney has planned…The Matterhorn (aka The Hill) and The Haunted House (new one) will do just half of what POTC 4 has done.
Congratualtions to Rich Ross. You’ve done an incredible job. NOT!
RR isn’t a traditional studio head. He’s not a ‘creative’ guy. His job is to manage and make sure things are profitable. He’s spent 2 years firing people and now there’s only 3 or 4 people left from the Dick Cook regime. He’s easily fired 20+ senior managers. Now that he’s done destroying everything he has to build and odds are it’ll go well — most of his product comes from outside suppliers which will prop Disney up. The only product he can really meddle with are smaller Disney productions like Prom and Timothy Green which he will probably fail at, but the other movies from Marvel, Pixar, etc will hold that place together. Iger has set him up well – it’s his to lose.
Awesome news. I loved the movie. The best one in the series. It works best because it got rid of the boring love story of ORlando and Keira. America has become bitter and don’t know how to enjoy fun films anymore. I am glad I live in Taiwan.
Can’t wait for the next installment of the series. Keep it fun and don’t care about American bitter audiences, the rest of the world can pick the bill.
I wish Americans stop being so bitter and get their once great country back to it’s former glory. Life is short let’s enjoy. Captain Jack Sparrow is awesome.
Wow, people in Taiwan have really bad taste in movies. Must be the imposed communism.
you confuse Taiwan with North Korea my dear. no wonder the whole world think you are stupid as hell.
Hey… Let’s not be mean to the Americans… Without them, there would be no Captain Jack Sparrow!! 8D
Hear that, right-wing asshole America? STOP BEING BITTER! You’re bringing America down. Taiwan has spoken. LOL!
sorry, what? the movie didn’t cross $300 million in US = Americans are bitter? i’m glad you live in Taiwan too
Only because its in 3D, and unlike the US, that fad hasn’t burnt out internationally. ONLY because of this.
Yes it will.
I thought I clicked reply?
Anyway, that last comment was directed at Wade Garret, who wrote “This. Franchise. Will. Never. Die.”
NO IT’S NOT! C’mon … LET’S SEE THE FIGURES IN ADJUSTED DOLLARS — FOR INFLATION and the lower value of the dollar.
THEN PUT THIS UP AGAINST STAR WARS and the other films of the last 20 years. As far as I’m concerned – if you don’t report it in adjusted dollars – you CAN’T compare this against other movies. Period.
Awesome news! POTC 4 was pure fun. The vest in the series. cant wait for POTC 5. I am glad i live in Taiwan, people here knows how to enjoy a fun movie. America needs to stop being so bitter all I read online from Americans is how much they hate everything. Maybe if instead of being so bitter and try to enjoy fun movies, America could get back to it’s former glory.
Don’t let hipsters destroy it
It’s a shame that box office success no longer reflects the quality of the movie.
Going to see this later on today at the cinema.
Critics are not out of touch, morons are.
Go. Spend money on boring crap. You’ll get more.
