Hollywood may not believe it. (Still Questions About Ronni Chasen Murder).
But after almost five months of examining more than 150,000 pieces of evidence, the Beverly Hills Police Department has closed its investigation into last year’s murder of Hollywood publicist Ronni Chasen, who was gunned down in her car on a Beverly Hills street Nov. 16 after attending an afterparty for the premiere of Burlesque. The Beverly Hills Courier reports today that police said Harold Martin Smith shot Chasen several times in the chest in a failed robbery attempt; Smith used the same gun to kill himself Dec. 1 as police closed in on him at an apartment complex in a seedy part of Los Angeles.

I’m expected to believe that Harold Martin Smith, who lived in East Hollywood, got on a bike with the intention of robbery and rode it all the way to Beverly Hills to shoot someone, not rob them and he acted alone. Riiiiiiight.
…And that a black dude on a bike wasn’t noticed (and pulled over) in Beverly Hills. Yeah.
You’ve created quite the straw man there. It’s conceivable that he biked all the way over there alone just to rob someone. Why would he need help for that? He might also have been in the area for something else and the robbery was an impulse. Or maybe it wasn’t robbery, but some other motive we won’t ever know about. Use your thinking cap, mate. Wild assumptions don’t bring justice to guilty men.
Agreed.
Something rather Lee Harvey Oswald about how they’re closing this case. Professional hit, clearly. But, oh, here’s a dead guy so let’s just move on.
It was a robbery gone wrong only if you ignore all the substantial evidence otherwise.
Burlesque was the last movie she saw before she died, what a nightmare!
So I take it that Police Chief Wiggum from The Simpsons was the lead detective on this case.
I call bullsh*t cover up
Bingo!
“Seedy part of LA”? All of LA is seedy….
Not really a cover up, more of a “we give up.”
Complete incompetence, just as they did with the investigation into the murder of Scott Ruffalo.
Not a “we give up” more like a “We were told not to REALLY solve the case” What crap.. LOLA has better results than this
The murder & suicide weapon is reported to be a stolen gun registered to a police officer from the Valley. Who is the officer, how was the weapon stolen, how did it wind up in Smith’s possession & is there any connection between this officer & Smith?
Maybe it’s exactly how the police are reporting the findings, but it all seems rather incomplete & not a little suspicious…
Even Ms. Chasen’s brother doesn’t seem convinced:
Chasen’s brother, screenwriter Larry Cohen, declined comment except to say, “whatever the police release, they release.”
When was the last time anyone saw a bike rider in Beverly Hills — of ANY color? And at midnight? And a random robbery where the robber kills the victim but takes nothing…This smells so bad, it just incites anger at the police. I certainly wouldn’t my murder — or anyone’s, for that matter — swept under the rug like this. This makes it a double crime. Very sad. Ronni deserved better.
What is most stunning about this murder is that we never really heard the full details. Yet we are to believe that some random guy from Hollywood rode his bike to BH to kill some random woman driving home. Didn’t add up when it happened. Doesn’t add up now. Sorry Ronnie, justice may never be served.
Yet we are to believe that some random guy from Hollywood rode his bike to BH to kill some random woman driving home. Didn’t add up when it happened. – and it was with a stolen police revolver.
A black man on a bicycle with a stolen police gun shot an innocent publicist in the middle of Beverly Hills. Not only that, he was a good shooter with the stolen gun, nailing her four times. Then he SPED away on his bicycle with no one seeing him at all. He kept the stolen gun/murder weapon on him and did not ditch it down a drain. When not even confronted by police, but when a cop called his name he reached for the fully loaded stolen gun and blew his brains out instantly. This crock wouldn’t play on a TV show, and LAPD expects it to play in this case?
(and btw, did he ride his bike to the valley to burglarize the cop?)
Let’s also not forget that the police initially said that the gun Smith had did not match the one that shot Ronnie. Someone has deep pockets or is really connected to the right corrupt law enforcement agent. Either way we may never know the truth of why this lovely lady died in such a brutal and “professional” way.
This ridiculous lone gunman theory sounds like something out of “Chinatown”, “Changeling” or “LA Confidential”. Yeesh. I find it hard to believe.
I haven’t followed this, but what other details don’t add up? Just curious…
For my 2 cents, I used to live in Sherman Oaks, and when I did, I rode my mountain bike up and over Coldwater Cyn, down through Beverly Hills, and all the way to the Beverly Center area. Ate lunch, and made it back.
All b/w noon and 7pm, and I wasn’t that tired.
Biking in LA gets you around faster than cars, so I wouldn’t say the distance b/w towns was a hinderance to any kind of planned robbery.
This will be a film like LA Confidential…but, probably not as good.
Deadline Hollywood prides itself on delivering the truth when others do not…
RIP Ronni Chasen.
This is a joke. That case was “closed” 48 hours after she was murdered.
What a shame. This case stinks from the start. What about the police statement regarding Smith’s gun not matching the crime weapon?
