TV watchdog Parents Television Council already targeted NBC’s new drama The Playboy Club during the pilot stage, blasting parent Comcast over nudity clauses in the actors’ contracts. Now, following a Mormon Church-owned Utah NBC affiliate’s decision not to carry the show, the PTC is urging more stations to follow suit and preempt the drama set in the 1960s at the first Playboy Club in Chicago. The PTC mocks the official series description, “a sophisticated series about the transitional times of the early 1960s and the complex lives of a group of working-class women.” “Putting a veneer of sophistication on an industry that exploits women and destroys families is not laudable, it is disgraceful,” PTC president Tim Winter wrote in letters sent out to NBC stations around the country. “In what manner does such the airing of such material reconcile with your public interest obligations as a broadcast licensee?”
The letter quotes Shelley Lubben, founder of the Pink Cross Foundation, described as “an organization dedicated to helping victims of the pornography industry,” who claims that “NBC is breaking the law with this show. They’re not meeting FCC standards.” The letter features both a plea with station owners/managers not to air Playboy Club and a threat of possible FCC fines if they do. ”If you proceed with plans to air this series in your community, be assured that the Parents Television Council will be carefully reviewing every episode and will urge its members to file complaints with the Federal Communications Commission about any content that may be in violation of broadcast decency laws.” Additionally, PTC demands that stations stop airing promos for the show before 10 PM. The Playboy Club is undergoing retooling with about 30% of the pilot being reshot. But sources say that the reshoots are driven by the network’s desire to pump up the action and move the plot faster, not by complaints by watch groups.

If all these clowns (and that includes the management at KSL as well as the PTC) had actually watched The Playboy Club before they opened their yaps to protest it, they would know that the show isn’t about sex at all. What it is about is police corruption and the Mob in Chicago in the ’60s.
The Playboy Club is merely the venue in which the story takes place.
But why bother with the details when you can climb onto your soapbox and denounce teh Evil TV Network? That’s much more fun. And fills up the fund-raising coffers, doncha know?
I”ve seen the Playboy Club pilot- it’s trying to be Madmen. As for the PTC? I think they have a right to care- more of us would do well to notice the influence television has on our nation. I agree- we put more emphasis on ‘sex’ than violence, guns, etc. Why? that’s a good question… it’s a good idea to take everything in moderation, in my opinion
POP, the fact that they are reshooting the pilot means that it might end up being better written after the reshoot. Sometimes shows become better after they do reshoots and several episodes into the series.
I don’t know that I’ll watch it as I’m just not sure it will be any good. But, seriously, look at what the women wore in the actual Playboy Club and tell me it is worse than what we see in so many other shows- or, as someone else said Olympic beach volleyball. If a parent doesn’t want their child to watch something then they should BE A PARENT and not let their child watch it.
LOL! (and snorting Coca~Cola out my nose, but sooo worth it!)
The only reason to take the PTC seriously is to look at the havoc they caused after the Janet Jackson nipplegate Super Bowl show and huge fines the FCC hit CBS with afterward. 98% of the complaints were a photocopied complaint by the PTC. If they had never successfully enacted change, then they would be easy to ignore. That SB fiasco changed everything for network TV. And I watched the event and it was so fast I saw nothing. These people are supposed moral high ground people but are just bullying scumbags who want to force their agenda on people instead of changing the channel and allowing parents to actually take the responsibility to raise their own kids.
DAM! The PTC is as bad when it comes to censorship as GLAAD is!
Anal retentives who are doing far worse then what they tell other people they should not be doing period..are scary and funny at the same time.
Looking forward to NBC’s must-whack-Wednesday.
The PTC is one the most dangerous organizations. They are trying to censor programs in the US, not for the children’s sake, but because of their beliefs. What’s to stop them from moving on to books and magazines and attempting to have those banned also? If you don’t want your child to watch something, you can literally block a specific program in your household. I’m not sure why the PTC is still getting the power it does, but I would love for the entertainment industry to form a group and demolish it. The PTC is nothing more than the bastard Mormon child of the FCC.
The PTC will stop at nothing to trash a show using intellectual words hiding cheap slander. They even went as far as labeling MTV’s “Skins” as “child pornography,” along with stating all the sponsors are also supporters of it as well. All it had was a 17 year olds’ bare behind briefly shown. Shouldn’t many other movies and shows be labeled with that according to the PTC then? I’m not saying Skins was a good show, but it suffered because of that comment. The problem is that the PTC does not always or usually go after shows targeted for kids that are actually just as racy or suggestive (Gossip Girl, The Secret Life of the American Teenager) as the shows for adults late at night. This is why they obviously do not care about “parenting” and just uses it as a front for pushing their beliefs of what they want TV to be.
I am disgusted at the PTC for their cheep slander on shows and their obvious ignorance to the programs they fight against. Parents can raise their own children; they don’t need a radical Mormon organization to help them out.
PS: has anyone taken a look at their website? It’s a joke, every show is given a “red light” for inappropriate. Their top article about The Playboy Club talks about “pornography” being harmful… The show is based on the club which had nothing to do with “pornography.”
It’s time to tell the PTC to fuck off.
It be better if The Playboy Club airs on HBO or other premium networks.
