Roman Polanski’s Carnage will make its North American premiere Sept. 30 as the opening-night film of the 49th New York Film Festival, the event that kicked off The Social Network‘s big awards-season run last year. The film, starring Jodie Foster, Kate Winslet, Christoph Waltz and John C. Reilly, is an adaptation of Yasmina Reza’s Broadway smash God of Carnage, which won the Tony in 2009 at best play — making its New York return a kind of fitting homecoming. The plot revolves around the events of an evening when two Brooklyn couples are brought together after their children are involved in a playground fight. Said Ben Said produced the film; Sony Pictures Classics is releasing it. Of course, it’s a safe bet that the festival, which runs Sept. 30-Oct. 16, won’t have the director of its kickoff film walking the red carpet, as Polanski remains a fugitive in the U.S. after fleeing sentencing following a 1977 conviction for unlawful sex with a minor.

No interest in financially supporting a child rapist. I’ll pass.
Bye, TROLL!
So you never look at, read or watch any art made by anyone who’s ever done anything but good things in their lives. Fascinating. You must have a very limited knowledge of plays, movies, novels, etc., and the history of art in this world. How sad for you that you can’t separate art from a single incident in an artist’s life; what a terrible thing to go through life judging art by not just who made it, but by whether or not they’ve ever done a single thing they regret. Fascinating.
@ Mark,
So the OP is missing something because they refuse to financial support a rapist? Please. There are plenty of artists who do not sexually assault children or anyone else for that matter, who create wonderful works that are timeless. So what if Polanski directed a couple few films; I didn’t realize you had to sacrifice morality for good art.
And by that manner of thinking, if someone rapes your daughter, niece, or cousin it’s okay if the person’s a ‘great artist.’ Come on now.
seriously? you think what he did is pardonable.. purely coz he is an artist?
also this guy has a history of it and guess what he is out there and might be up to it again…
very poor rationalization..
Scott, I fear you have no idea what happened with Polanski. You know what he did? He confessed that he had sex with a minor. It was not child rape. What do you believe other people would have done? They would have denied it and it would have been “he said/ she said”. But since you and especially the US media react still hysterically about the case it was certainly better for Polanski to stay in Europe. Since he was never as rich as O.J. Simpson and Michael Jackson – who never confessed anything – he would have never been able to get away with it. And so the US public continues to enjoy reading about the downfall of Lindsay Lohan and no one comes up with the idea to bring those people to court who exploited her as a kid and teenager financially (parents) and sexually (a lot of sex with a minor – but her mother knew it was better to keep her mouth shut to earn more money out of LL instead of trying to get money out of Polanski only once as the mother of the involved teenager tried and failed in the 70′s). Hypocrites!
kind of surprised Foster’s not playing the uptight mother role. I mean, I don’t exactly think of her as loose and hippiesh.
Jodie Foster’s character isn’t a loose hippie — at least she wasn’t in the American version of the play. Just more working class than the other mother.
Can’t wait for this one. “The Ghost Writer” was brilliant, one of the best thrillers in years. Polanski’s one of the few truly great filmmakers, and I’m dying to see how he adapted this.
Yeah “The Ghost Writer” for me was extremely thrilling as well. I remember that half way through I fell asleep and had a terrifying dream of being underwater surrounded by tentacles of an octopus. I woke up right as the credits were rolling and spilled my diet coke everywhere. Truly a modern day thriller of a film.
When will the full line-up be announced does anybody know?
I hope it better than the play. It wasn’t that good. Vey slowed paced
Love Roman Polanski and his films. I think it is time for people to stop fixating on other people’s lives and concentrate on their own. “The sex with a minor” should be put to rest at this point. The woman that this happened to has. Polanski is a great director and I am happy he is still doing what he does best!
13-year-olds Dude
We should not be applauding a child rapist and dignifying him with the opening night of a prestigious American festival. This is the lamest decision ever…he was a 40 year old man when it happened. He’s a bad guy and there’s no excuse.
Polanski may indeed be a gifted movie maker.
But he is still a man who drugged and forcibly raped a minor girl.
And this was not some isolated random act, but an event he planned for and executed with fore thought.
It would appear that he felt entitled to his pleasure. There was abundant evidence of his crime for investigators and that was why he bolted and fled.
I may recognize his talent, but I am also aware that he is a twisted and sick person who uses the blindness of sycophants to escape justice. I hope that fact haunts and hunts him until his last day.
For the record:
The “forcibly” part wasn’t proven. It was part of her testimony, but there was no physical evidence. He plead guilty to the charge of “unlawful sex with a minor”, in other words statutory rape, and went to prison for 42 days. The victim has said that “it wasn’t as bad as the grand jury testimony” and that “he didn’t mean to hurt me.”
