EXCLUSIVE: Exactly two months after he joined the upcoming CW drama series The Secret Circle as an executive producer, Richard Hatem has been let go for creative differences. Executive producer Kevin Williamson, who came on board the project in February and rewrote the original script by Andrew Miller, is running the series, which he executive produces with Miller and Alloys Entertainment’s Leslie Morgenstein and Gina Girolamo. “Kevin has a vision, and they just didn’t see eye-to-eye creatively,” a source close to the show said. I understand that Hatem is staying in business with Secret Circle producer Warner Bros TV through a development arrangement, which is now being finalized. It is not clear whether Hatem will be replaced on Secret Circle. Before him, there were two other writing executive producers, Elizabeth Craft and Sarah Fain, who had originally developed the project with Miller, but they departed in March after the Williamson’s script was picked up to pilot with him as showrunner. Hatem wrote and executive produced another CW drama pilot this past season, Heavenly, and then joined Secret Circle in late May after his pilot was not picked up to series by the network. He was on the series’ Comic-Con panel last week alongside Williamson and Miller and stars Britt Robertson, Thomas Dekker, Phoebe Tonkin and Natasha Henstridge. Based upon the book series by L.J. Smith, Secret Circle stars Robertson as a young woman who moves to a new town and discovers that not only is she a witch and part of a secret coven, but she’s also the key that will unlock a centuries-old battle of good versus evil.

and so the revolving williamson door begins
who will be next?
Something smells really fishy here. Is it Alloy? Development Execs as producers? This isn’t a movie where you can have a round table of writers folks. These Alloy folks sound like they might be out of their depth.
Or is it diva Williamson riding rough shot? Why is there no clear leadership? Feel sorry for all the writers on one pilot.
Sounds like Richard Hatem may have dodged a bullet.
I don`t think that the Alloy producers are the problem. There are also two alloy pepole exec producing on The Vampire Diaries. I think it`s Williamson. He has his vision and he wants that to be visualised. When there are conflicts he is the one who gets to stay and/or the last word, because he is very important for the show. The whole marketing campaign is based on him. The new show from Vampires producer Kevin Williamson. So WB and CW will be doing everything to please him.
This is simply all about Williamson being over the hill…been there, done it.His time has come and gone..Instead of embracing new talent..working with it….he’s threatened! How many more talented people are they going to have to go through to satisfy his misplaced ego”" Sadly, his name doesn’t mean anything anymore. Who wants to tell him that??
He seemed very enthusiastic to be on the project, and he appeared to have good rapport with Miller in a joint interview. I wonder what the differences were. It doesn’t look good when the rug is pulled out from somebody this fast, and before the show premieres. Maybe it’s part of maintaining a tight ship, but it looks like disarray. Didn’t they know his feelings about the show before they hired him?
Creative differences? More like Hatem stepped down because working with Kevin Williamson is like sitting in the seventh circle of hell. How many brilliant upper level writers have come and gone between Vampire Diaries and Secret Circle? It’s sad that WBTV refuses to acknowledge the common denominator.
I worked for Williamson on Vampire Diaries. He fired me. He was a class act. The problem is not his ego. He was a great guy to work for. His problem is he doesn’t hire the right writers for the job. He loves to surround himself with talent. Even if they’re the wrong talent for the show. I knew Hatem wouldn’t last. He’s not even a real showrunner.
Fact. He hires crappy writers.
It’s KW – he’s paranoid of others’ success or participation. Instead of sitting on his pile of cash, enjoying the creative accolades, and being a mentor/godfather on projects, he has to be THE guy of THE project or it’s the highway. A shame.
I saw the pilot and it’s Meh. They cast Thomas Dekker as the heartthrob male ???!!! He clearly cannot hide his gay mannerisms, not for a second did I believe that he was into the lead girl. Who’s idea was that? Just make him a gay.
IS Thom Dekker gay?
Hatem is a great dude.
Yes, couldn’t imagine Richard Hatem having differences with anyone and it being his fault. Truly one of the nicest guys out there, and a great teacher.
Williamson is a sad, deeply disturbed guy. Unfortunately his brand of disturbed includes making sure anyone else that comes into contact with him gets to feel sad and disturbed too. He makes sure of it. He was still pretending that he wasn’t going to be involved with the secret circle when they hired the writing staff. He had nothing to do with it. From what I hear they’re all kind, professional, talented people, just the kind of thing the black-hole-for-a-soul can’t allow to exist. He’ll fire all these writers at some point, hire his own staff, and then eventually fire all of those people. Oh, if only he could fire those noisy demons that won’t stop banging around in his head –
Richard Hatem is hardly new talent. He’s the one over the hill in this scenario. Sorry, folks, did you see Highway to Heavenly? Why was he hired in the first place? The truth is no one can spin a story the way Williamson does for The Vampire Diaries. I would put my money on Williamson over Hatem any day of the week.
Hatem wrote the Gates. That show sucked. I bet Hatem wasn’t up to the task.
I hope this doesn’t affect the show’s commitment to the older characters. This was going to be the one where the CW turned over a new leaf and made the adults more than peripheral, and to that end they hired Gale Harold and Natasha Henstridge. Gale Harold’s villain is already generating big buzz. PLEASE don’t let this turn into Gossip Girl (where the considerable talent of Matthew Settle has gone tragically to waste).
richard hatem didn’t deliver. he was replaced before the show went off the rails. had nothing to do with williamson. studio called it.
Richard Hatem is a GREAT guy, talented writer, and a pleasure to work with. Ask around — the problem personality here is well known.
