The Secret Service and Fox News are investigating a series of attacks early Monday on one of the news network’s Twitter feeds, FoxNewspolitics, in which hackers erroneously said that President Obama had been assassinated in Iowa. The six messages were taken down several hours — around noon today — after they were posted. Fox News Digital General Manager Jeff Misenti says the company has asked Twitter to conduct a “detailed investigation” into the incident and to come up with ”measures to prevent future unauthorized access into FoxNews.com accounts.” A student newspaper at the State University of New York at Stony Brook said that an anti-corporate group called The Script Kiddies claimed responsibility and may hit Fox News again. Here’s Fox News’ statement about the attacks:
FoxNews.com’s Twitter feed for political news, FoxNewspolitics, was hacked early Monday morning.
Hackers sent out several malicious and false tweets claiming that President Obama had been assassinated. Those reports were incorrect, of course, and the president was spending the July 4 holiday with his family at the White House.
The tweets have been removed from the feed.
FoxNews.com alerted the U.S. Secret Service, which is declining public comment. Jeff Misenti, vice president and general manager of Fox News Digital, said FoxNews.com was working with Twitter to address the situation as quickly as possible.
“We will be requesting a detailed investigation from Twitter about how this occurred, and measures to prevent future unauthorized access into FoxNews.com accounts,” Misenti said.
FoxNews.com regrets any distress the false tweets may have created.
New ‘Man Of Steel’ Television Spot #6

I don’t think these hackers understand the full repercussions of their actions when they are caught.
If I was a skeptical Fox News style commentator, I would be saying “Sure… your twitter was “HACKED”… just like Anthony Weiner’s was.”
weiner should have done what FOXNEWS did, and that was to report it to the authorities.
Weiner never did that.
Because he was lying, and reporting a lie to the authorities would have been ten times worse than lying to us.
I may not be a fan of FoxNews, but this should, IMHO, be taken as a affront to the Office of President at any stage in time. No matter party holds office at the time.
After several hours? Um, Okay.
It took Fox News 9 hours to take down those tweet. Nine hours? I don’t care how hacked an account gets – those fools at Twitter should have been able to shut down that account in the matter of minutes. But it seems somebody wanted to drag their feet and keep false news of Obama being killed on the internet to make sure it keeps gaining trending traction.
When did Fox News decide to contact Twitter about the hack? Was it before or after the Secret Service called Fox News wondering why they kept those hacks on Twitter longer than Anthony Weiner’s Junk Shot? And how come it took Twitter so damn long to do anything about it? They could have suspended the account and took it offline, but instead they kept the world of Twitter thinking it was a real report of a President’s 4th of July murder from the Fair and Balanced and Most Trusted Name in News.
Don’t expect any real reporting for Fox News about what they were doing for those 9 hours when somehow Twitter couldn’t take their account offline until things get sorted out. Seems like at the minimum, Twitter had no problem declaring the president had been killed in Iowa.
This happened on a holiday weekend which might explain why it took so long to get taken down. And, quite frankly, if Twitter is as poorly run as Facebook, I imagine Fox may not have even been able to access their account after the hackers probably also changed Fox’s Twitter passwords etc. Hence the time it took to get in there and clean up the mess. Also, I find it very hard to believe that Fox would leave that on there for “trending” purposes when anyone with an ounce of intelligence could find out very quickly if indeed any assassination had taken place by turning on the television. People still watch TV you know.
John Karavitis I don’t know exactly how they have their IT department set up, but I agree, 9 hours, especially for a news service, is way too long. Could it be that Fox News outsources a lot of its IT work to India?? That wouls be a possible explanation as to why it took so long for someone to catch and then correct. But even so, you’d think that SOMEONE at Fox News would themselves have had the presence of mind to keep an eye out for their Twitter feeds, etc. And how easy is it to hack Twitter?? I myself John V. Karavitis haven’t Twittered in months, but still, if Fox News isn’t safe, then no one is. Is it my imagination, or are computers still just as prone to being hacked, etc., as they were then Windows 95 first came out?? Have we not learned a thing about Internet/computer server security??? John V. Karavitis
Is this comment a joke? I did have a good laugh regardless, thanks. (If you are serious, yes Fox does outsource lots of its IT to HCL America, which is a subsidiary of HCL India. They laid off over 40 people in Century City (based in Bldg 89) last September, but no one on Deadline seemed to be interested then…)
Seriously. If this isn’t a call to make hacking a federal crime. I mean come on. If I pass on a copy of a DVD its 5 years and 250K fine, but these assholes can basically post anything they want and get away with it?
I realize its July 4th and I certainly treasure the freedoms we all share, but last I checked the First Amendment STILL has limits attached to it.
We all know the FOB should be to attack the debt ceiling and the budget issue. SOB should clearly be to handle this hacking issue once and for all before the shit really hits the fan and all that economic rescue effort won’t mean squat.
Hacking is a computer crime. There are several federal statutes that cover it, with 18 USC § 1030 being the most commonly charged.
With some frequency, people are prosecuted, convicted and even jailed. Just ask the young man who hacked Palin’s email a couple of years ago. He’s in federal prison today.
John V. Karavitis Hacking is indeed a federal crime. I think the big news story here is that even an organization like Fox News, which was supposed to have kept an eye on its web properties, (a) got hit by a hacker (albeit it was hit at its Twitter account, over which it has no control) and (b) that it took so long to address the issue. And besides, even with the criminal laws in place, these idiots appear to keep “hacking away” at the system. In a sense it’s a good thing, the hackers do expose vulnerabilities in our computer systems. I’m not condoning the hackers’ actions, but I’m just pointing out the reality of the situation. John V. Karavitis
It took almost twelve hours for the comments to be removed. May I submit that FoxNewsPolitics was…not really trying?
I love how in this comment board it has gone from 8 hours, to 9 hours, to 12 hours. Perhaps the people who needed to be contacted at Fox were out on a boat, or at a BBQ, or some place where it might take a few hours to get to a cell? And then perhaps, the hackers changed a password, so Fox had to contact twitter, and it was hard to find someone at Twitter? Just because something is trending doesn’t mean every Fox employee that can fix it knows about it!
It took several hours before the tweets were taken down? Somebody at FoxNews was asleep on the job.
Gotta love Republicans. They claim that Obama is anti-American. Meanwhile, they are the ones fantasizing about his death. That’s treason.
Yup. Treason and sedition. They should be shot at sunrise. Good post, Ben. Happy 4th.
You honestly think it was a Conservative who did this? Dream on…
I’m no fan of FOX but I’m not sure how you can say that Republicans hacked twitter. Or are you just trying to rile everyone up?
Give it a rest. I’m sure these kids are neither republican nor democrat.
I absolutely concur. I now have yet another thing to hate about Fox News and Republicans.
That’s because the desert sun has baked your brain and shriveled your soul.
savvydude, you’ve just cracked the mystery that is John McCain.
And there lies the difference between the right and the left. The Right doesn’t hate you. It pities you.
Oh, so you’re insinuating that Fox News is a Republican outlet? Sooo, NBC, CBS, ABC, MSNBC, CNN, the NY Times and Media Matters are democrat outlets then?
NBC, CBS, ABC, CNN, and the NY Times may lean a bit to the left, but they don’t come near the line that FoxNews has crossed of being completely one sided with no regard to the other side (MSNBC is getting there in terms of where FoxNews is, albeit the other side). Only MSNBC and FoxNews can be compared. The rest are not even close. Don’t play the “woe is me” card that every outlet is against the right. It’s just not true. They may lean a bit (and this is only at times, not 24/7) but that doesn’t let the FoxNews veiwers play the “woe is me” card.
“A bit to the left?”
Sorry, but if you use those terms you do not know what either “a bit” or “left” actually means.
No, they are actually news outlets.
Yeah, they are news outlets. And they have proved it by such good reporting about Anthony Weiner, the debt talks, the Tea Party (not one single accusation of racism has been supported), an analysis of international affairs and the history of the close Obama advisors.
They are not journalists… they are apologists. They now spend their time attacking people who actually do report things, not report on incidents and people themselves.
Ben, you are an idiot and a fool. Stop posting and leave the commentary to adults who understand the issues.
Was the Gabriel Range film DEATH OF A PRESIDENT treason, too?
Made by a Brit. Nice try, though.
HACKED!? Where was Ex-Rep. Weiner when this happened?
he was at a 4th BBQ committing a bit of cannibalism. ?
The Kardashians and Ashton Kutcher have a lot of explaining to do.
I thought Twitter accounts couldn’t be hacked??
Weiner said that his was and everyone said it was impossible.
It’s not impossible to hack any computer account. It is impossible to hack into someone’s phone and make it take a picture of the phone owner’s junk.
If I tweet and change my mind, I click on the tweet in my account and hit delete. Easy. So why did it take Fox News so long to remove these?
I’m guessing the hackers changed the password on the account.
Oh the irony, Fox news complaining that someone posted a falsehood under their name.
Hey ca
Hey Captain Obvious, Wiener boy came clean and told the truth that nothing was hacked, or have you been watching MSNBC so much you missed his confession?
He told the truth after Breitbart showed he was a liar, and MSNBC and CNN attacked Breitbart for making the report, and sites like HuffPo and DailyKos accused Britbart of fabricating the story, then performing the hack itself.
It was not something Weiner volunteered until he was buried in his own deceptions.
“FoxNews.com regrets any distress the false tweets may have created.” Distress? Fox News lovers were partying in the streets at this news.
They haz a sad now.
I thought a “script kiddie” was hacker lingo for someone who was a harmless copycat.
It is. Never trust a mainstream publication to report a hack right. Though I doubt a script was necessary here – most places don’t take twitter seriously enough to give it a real password, it was probably just a password guess.
Gotta love how the MSNBC Trolls you know the station that NOBODY watches, because they lean left that they fix the news so badly that no one watches has sent there small band of trolls out on the message board. I guess there smarting still that the left leaning Tom Hanks movie bombed.
Please stop. You’re making yourself sound like an idiot.
Actually, he makes himself look like someone paying attention to ratings.
Those idiots that crashed the state dinner for a reality show should have been jailed and instead were left alone and then tried to squeeze fame out if it. These hackers will probably be rewarded with their own show.
This may damage the credibility of Fox News.
Gold star!
Maybe the “young” that cherish the internet so much should wake up and not rely on something that is evidently easily hacked, remember this isn’t the first time, from Visa / MasterCard to the Arizona government website has been hacked, so why is this any different.
I believe one tenth of what I see on the internet, maybe young people with all their Ipads, Iphones, laptops need to do the same. This has been going on for months and it’s only going to continue until security is enhanced.
If only the story was true, then the founding fathers would feel a milicentimeter happier.
I feel sorry for the Republicans now though. And honestly people, stop complaining about how it “took 12 hours”. When your facebook, twitter, myspace gets hacked and naked pics of “you” pop up while your on a week long cruise without any internet access, you’ll have the last laugh.
@BubTheZombie – The last time I checked the Contitution gave limits to the government, not the otherway around. Please know what your taking about before you say something extremely wrong like Sarah Palin did/does. Hacking an account doesn’t count as “freedom of speech”, and honestly this BS aout “federal crimes” should stop too. As James Bovard once said, America needs fewer laws and not more prisons. Your Twitter account counts as your personal property, and if someone hacks it, they SHOULD pay a fine. But there shouldn’t be ANOTHER law for it. The law is redundant. The Constitution specifically is there to prevent others from stealing or damaging personal property.
@Ben – Despite my comment above (which for anyone who doesn’t share my sense of humor, was a joke), I don’t think fantasizing about anyone’s death (ahem, Bin Laden) is humane. And despite how truely Anti-American Obama is (please, do name a Patriotic President besides Washington), I do think your comment is one of bigotry. While I do not consider myself either an R, D, or I, I think any true American, further, person, can accept the fact that having Obama just purely kill Bin Laden, without any pure facts that he had anything to do with 9/11 wasn’t justice. In fact, it wasn’t NOT justice either. While Bin Laden was probably the worst person on this earth, did actually kill thousands in other countries, and cared little about others, he still was a person, no matter how low on the chart(s) he was. The Constitution is the law of the land that says anyone suspected of ANY crime should be faced with a speedy trial – in part so one man, the President, can’t just be god and determines who lives and who dies. But Mr. God here, decides that since this man is so bad, we might as well kill him. He might as well get the army on Jared Laughner. And to top that, the world has no idea that Bin Laden is behind 9/11 (besides what the Gov’t released since then, and look we had Bush and Obama in office, two of the worst Presidents, dickheads, illogical and uneducated people that are playing a game while in office, and two Presidents that flush the meaning of being any type of human, let alone an American, down the rusty, old pipes, why in the hell would we trust what tainted info they put out?). Obama raped justice. I don’t see how you can say “Oh Obama isn’t anti-American.” When infact the Constitution doesn’t say not to grant these rights to a man who kills thousands in another country and is #1 on the FBI’s Most Wanted list. Would we do that do the queen in the UK, the President in France, the leader of the European Sociolist Party? Innocent until Proven Guilty. It would have been so much better for the world to see what kind of a Hack Job Bin Landen was if there was a trial. Even if he got the Death Penalty, which I am against, I would have been 100% happier, and would even THINK about voting Obama in 2012. You call Republicans and this hack TREASON? Look at your President dude.
“Obama raped justice.”
Please define rape.
Rants are so gauche.
Nobody cares
It took HOURS to take it down? I guess that goes with no one I talked to today (and that’s a lot of people) even heard about it. Guess that speaks to the Faux News Twit audience.
…or that Fox News Readers are no where near as gullible as the typical MSNBC audience and knew a BS story when they saw it.
Now I can’t be sure the bald face lies on Fox are genuine.
To the hateful twits that insist that this was done intentionally by Fox News: this is a holiday weekend and quite a lot of companies are running on a skeleton staff. To not see these tweets on a company account for an entire shift is a symptom of carelessness on a holiday weekend, not maliciousness. Whoever’s duty it was to monitor these feeds will and should be fired for neglect.
If this had been done about a politician you abhor you’ve been laughing at this event, no matter how much you lie and protest. Obama is a horrifying bad President and I will personally drink to his removal from elected office in 2012, but he is still a human being and a father to two innocent girls who do no need to go thru life without a father. This man’s horrific policies may divide this nation, but should be removed from office via elections.
It was abhorrent when you bile-filled twats joked daily about President Bush’s death, even supporting a movie about his assassination. I would be just as bad as you filth if I did the same for a leader I disliked.
three things you never do, yell fire in a crowded place, say the word “bomb” at an airport & threaten the POTUS. This is one joke they will wish they never played. fools.
