UPDATE BELOW: According to Sony Pictures, a minor contretemps developed Friday night before the studio’s Spider-Man panel at Comic-Con because Rhys Ifans wanted to smoke backstage. Sony says: “It was a minor incident involving a security guard and smoking backstage. Police were called. But I was told Rhys was not arrested and was not handcuffed by the police. I am told he was given a ticket citation.” Ifans then was introduced at the panel as the new Spider-Man villain Lizard. If Sony changes its story to me, I’ll let you know but TheCrap is a notoriously inaccurate website. In the meantime I’m sure people will say this reeks of a publicity stunt. UPDATE: Sony Pictures just issued this statement to me: “Rhys Ifans was detained by Comic-Con security after a brief incident backstage prior to and immediately following The Amazing Spider-Man panel. Police were notified and a citation was issued to Mr. Ifans who deeply regrets this incident.”

Smoking is so vile. I can’t support anyone who has such a reckless habit, particularly one that’s so dangerous to others. Stop polluting our air, Rhys.
I hope you don’t drive a car.
It might make you seem a bit, hypocritical.
What a bore job by Sony. This is the VILLAIN in their refresh (which is already struggling to generate buzz). Why not play this up as Ifans is a wild-card and a bad-ass and up the interest quotient for the film?
um,I saw the panel and footage and it was generating lots of buzz, looked great and different from the other movies
So glad to know that we have alert gestapo poised to arrest people for taking a smoke break.
I bet I know who you voted for in ’08, and he smokes.
only creating buzz that is all, nothing news worthy here.
So… this is what we’ve become. Our new villains aren’t detained for things like punching a fan or fighting with the cops like back in the old days, it’s for smoking too close to an entrance. We’re so lame.
In the land of the free, you get arrested for smoking…
