EXCLUSIVE: Summit Entertainment has acquired screen rights to John Huddy’s non-fiction book Storming Las Vegas: How a Cuban-Born, Soviet-Trained Commando Took Down The Strip to the Tune of Five World Class Hotels, Three Armored Cars, and Millions of Dollars. Summit has attached Antoine Fuqua to direct, Lorenzo di Bonaventura to produce, and they smartly plan to title the movie, simply, Storming Las Vegas.
Published in 2008 by Random House, the book told the rags-to-riches story of a modern-day Robin Hood. Jose Vigoa was a larger-than-life Cuban-born commando veteran of the Soviet army who found his way to Vegas in the 1990s at a time when casinos were trying to embrace a squeaky clean image. Vigoa and his crew embarked on a violent 16-month crime wave that targeted some of the town’s most prominent casinos. He was pitted against a 23-year vet of the Vegas police force, who was charged with tracking down Vigoa and his cohorts without letting the story make the papers and spoil Vegas’ image. Fuqua, who last directed Brooklyn’s Finest, is also in business with Summit developing the action thriller The Tomb. CAA repped both the book and Fuqua in the deal.

What happened with Fuqua directing that Eminem boxing movie, “Southpaw”? Did that fall apart?
The most unbelievable part of the whole story is the part where the Vegas casinos were aiming to be “sqeaky clean” and family friendly.
This could be great.
I’ve lived in Las Vegas for over 20 years and I recollect this story. Last I heard they caught this loser.
Uh…how exactly does his story make him a ‘modern day Robin Hood?’
Because with Fuqua directing, it will be just as bad as Ridley’s recent ROBIN HOOD. God he wasted so much good talent in BROOKLYN’S FINEST.
And you are?……..
I LIKED Brooklyn’s Finest. Kind of cliche, but a good popcorn movie. Good acting all around.
Hmm…who can play the detective? I nom Denzel for the Detective. How old is the Cuban? Antonio Banderas for the Cuban.
He stole from the rich (the casinos) and gave to the poor (himself and his cronies). Who among us couldn’t use more money?!
Why is Fuqua always directing crime/gang-related stuff? Is that all Hollywood thinks he can do or is it his preference?
Fuqua hasnt had a hit since training day
didn’t they do this already in the video game Tom Clancy Rainbow Six:Vegas
Just “watched” Brooklyn’s Finest. This guy has absolutely no idea of how to tell a story. All style that gets lost in itself. I think that is what they call pretentious. So what about the other three films he is supposed to be directing? Lots of announcements, little product.
He also directed TEARS OF THE SUN but I get your point Haggar. Sometimes it seems like if a film has a black director — Spike Lee excluded — it always has some type of ghetto element to it.
Brooklyn’s finest is a good picture. Fuqua is a good film maker.
