Arsenio Hall seems to figure that a 17-year rest is long enough. Having quit his iconic late-night talk show in 1994, Hall was asked this afternoon during a PBS panel at TCA about an Ed Sullivan Comedy Special premiering Aug. 6 whether he’d consider making a comeback. “I’d have to change my name to Nick Cannon and live with Mariah (Carey),” he joked. “But I think it’s a perfect time for that personally. Give me a microphone. My son’s 11 and he can drive himself to school. I’m ready to host!” When a critic pressed if he was serious, Hall acknowledged, “It’s pretty crowded out there. I’m not sure if it’s too crowded for a 55-year-old guy to re-emerge, but if they give me a little daylight I’m gonna slide into it.”

I don’t think America’s ready for Arsenio.
I’m a fan of Arsenio Hall, we came up the comedy ranks together and I did his talk shows years ago, He is a great, funny, guy, and should make a comeback, Why not?
Good Luck Arsenio,
Love lois xoox
I’ll be watching
This man is the best, has been the best, and we’re waiting for the best to come back and make us laugh again. “He’s a natural!”
Not only is Ameriica not ready for Arsenio…America doesn’t want Arsenio either.
Bingo. There is a reason why he didn’t last long in the first place.
That reason was the people. It was highly rated despite being offered in certain markets and varying time slots.
Speak for yourself. Can’t wait for him to return! -Stretch
Please come back!! There is nothing to watch on late night. You need to come to Atlanta and stop playing around!! See ya when you get here.(17 years wayyyyyyyyyyyy tooooo long) Everyone misses you.
Hell Yeah Arsenio Bring The Party Back To Late Night TV, Let The Dogs Out
I was a fan of your previous show until you started having your “home boys” on. I never heard of them and didn’t care to watch them or your show, my friends agreed. Please come back and leave your no name friends at home.
I’d watch!
Sure, why not? He introduced us to our first rapist president, so why not the next one?
What on earth is wrong with you?
Sorry Arsenio, it’s over. 17 years later? Come on man.
Im thinking Americas plenty ready, keep em (talk hosts) coming. Today’s mix of yakkers appeal to such a fragmented audience than back when arsenio aired…there’s no need for ‘America’ to be ready…because a 2 share would amount to hit today. I’m sure he could get that.
A little revisionist history? Arsenio didn’t quit his popular late night talk show. It quit him. It was cancelled due to low ratings. Audiences were eventually turned off by his ever growing ego. His talk show went from being the coolest hippest show to watch in late night to just being plain painful to watch.
Towards the ending of The Arsenio Show, it had decent ratings. But , at the time, the Fox executives ( and tv protestors ) were ” up in arms ” and disgusted about the upcoming Arsenio Hall interview with Louis Farakannah. After the Farakannah interview, Fox immediately canceled his talk show.
Farrakhan was not his last show, but it did put the final nail in the coffin by turning off the few remaining viewers he had left. His audience had already been eroding over the last season as the show lost affiliates that had aired his show in syndication in favor of other late night programming like Letterman and the short-lived Chevy Chase Show. When the numbers were no longer there, neither was the show.
The show was not distributed by FOX is was distributed by Paramount. The Farakhan interview was Feb 25, 1994 and Arsenio announced HE was leaving, not cancelled, in early April of ’94. The show was groundbreaking for many reasons and changed the way late night vets like Leno and Letterman booked their shows.
Prior to Arsenio somebody like Bobby Brown would never have been booked on Leno or Letterman as well as a slew of other actors, comics and musicians. Arsenio was influential in helping to introduce old America to new America long before Hip Hop and tolerance were so widely popular and accepted.
I say bring him back soon!!!!
I agree with KIT IT SANDI. In fact, Arsenio was inspiring to me in a lot of ways; there were few minorities in that arena (talk show). In fact, I am in the process of starting my own and it would be helpful to speak with him. He knows that industry. And say what you want but the guy held his own. DO YOU, ARSENIO; SEE YOU AT THE TOP!
I was an Arsenio fan back in the day but he totally lost me after that lame “interview” with hate-monger Louis Farrakhan.
You must remember, a talk show is open to all opinions. If those in charge accepted Clinton and his horn, why was it so wrong for him to interview Farrakhan to voice his opinion? This is where some of you lose sight of the purpose of a talk show due to your small minds.
I enjoyed the Arsenio Hall Show . The show was always energetic, youthful, modern, funny, and entertaining- plus, he had the best celebrity guests . Arsenio was a breath of fresh air from the white bread and stuffy talk show host. Whether you like the guy or not- he helped changed the landscape of the US talk show world, and he brought much needed color to the talk show world . Plus, Hall became a major threat to Johnny Carson & David Letterman.
PS, I will never forget Fox axing The Arsenio Hall Show , after he interviewed Louis Farakannah. That was definitely a gutsy move on Arsenio’s part.
It may have aired on your local Fox affiliate, but it wasn’t a Fox network show. It was syndicated by Paramount.
There may be some confusion because a couple years before that show, he hosted Fox’s “Late Show” after Joan Rivers was fired.
I stumbled on Craig Ferguson’s show for two minutes the other night and all I saw were puppets and a dancing donkey. I was not impressed so surely Arsenio’s schtick can fit, even though I would like DL Hughley to get an opportunity before Arsenio gets another try.
PS I saw an ad for Tower Heist featuring Eddie Murphy, seemingly acting like Eddie Murphy circa 1980′s/90′s (and minus makeup, prosthetics and an animated donkey). Are Eddie and Arsenio trying to make a comeback?
Wow way to miss it w/Ferguson. You didn’t watch much if you think that’s a donkey. He won a Peabody last year for his 2009 interview w/Bishop Desmond Tutu. The swearing puppets are an occasional opening bit. Letterman makes him operate on a shoestring budget, so if you miss the band & other bells and whistles, blame Dave. Craig’s week of Paris (France not Hilton, thank God) shows start today. Check those out. His autobiography American On Purpose is terrific.
I can’t stand the “comedy” bits on Craig’s show, but I love the interviews. They are often just conversations and far more interesting that what you would see on a “normal” talk show.
Can’t wait. He should call his new show, “The Hack Show,” ’cause that’s what he was, and a shill. He didn’t even bother to listen to the answers from his guests. Terrible interviewer. His rating were in the toilet THAT’s why he put Louie the Charmer Farrakhan on, as a last ditch effort to create excitement.
LOL @ white people. I didn’t even know Arsenio’d even HAD Farrakhan on, and I used to watch him back in the day. Funny how you folks got amnesia from 2000-2008 (the Bush/Cheney Nightmare Years) yet remember an Arsenio show from over 17 years ago with a guy who hasn’t made headlines since at *LEAST* 1995 (Million Man March). SMH
LOL @ black people who are foolish enough to compare a president and vice-president to a rabid racist. If you still wanna do the Bush/Cheney bashing, by all means lets have at it. I’d take 8 more years of Bush/Cheney over four more years f he imbecile who currently holds the office.
I’ll compare a president/vice-president to racists when they were, in fact, racists.
And if you’d take 8 more years of the duo (and their Neocon cronies) who actually got us in the mess we’re in now, you’re beyond hope. You belong somewhere other than a movie blog.
Thank God my passport is up to date.
+1
I was thinking the same thing. I used to watch Arsenio back in the day too. Don’t remember Farrakhan but I guess folks on this board recall the interview quite vividly. Must of rankled a lot of feathers. Isn’t that what a good entertaining show is supposed to do?
I think Arsenio would simply pick up where he left off. Now, that’s on a talent level, rather or not it will actually happen is a different story, underlining that is rather or not THEY will give him a chance to. I think that’s more the question here what you all think?
This is such welcome news. I’ve been hoping he would return someday for a long time.
Really? REALLY?
Anyone who would give hate-monger, Calypso Louie Farrakhan a forum to speak without calling out his rabid, racist and anti-semitic views deserves to be canceled. I can only imagine the outcry if a white host treated Ku Klux Klansman, David Duke to a “respectful” interview while touting the good things he has done for the white community! Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton and the rest of the poverty pimps would be up in arms.
Farrakhan is a scum bag pure and simple and it should be made abundantly clear. He is no different than a Nazi or Klansman. Unfortunately, many in the black community embrace this fiend and disregard the obvious double-standard.
(Clapping enthusiastically) “Damn that boy good!”
I recently was thinking about arsenio. I think it is good timing for him to make a comeback
I wrote on Arsenio’s show and was there at the end of the run. He didn’t get canceled. The brass begged him to stay in production but he wanted a change. The Farrakhan show had nothing to do with anything; from our POV, it was a very interesting booking and Arsenio did a terrific job tackling that controversy. But then, he was always good at bringing warring parties together (like east/west rappers) and worked to bring peaceful resolutions to problems. Most people aren’t aware that after the LA riots when truck driver Reginald Denny got a brick to the head by some thugs, Arsenio sat by his bedside until Denny was conscious. He never promoted that and it was just one of many things he would do. Arsenio’s show had diversity, integrity, and always — great humor. The guy knew what jokes would work and was naturally funny. I wish the series stayed on the air longer because he was a blast to work for. More importantly, TV needs Arsenio. There’s no other host doing what he did so well.
@ DK And that is all that needs to be said about that.
“I’m not sure if it’s too crowded for a 55-year-old guy to re-emerge”
Yeah, it is too crowded. And where exactly does Mr. Hall think he’d go? No networks are available, unless Jay or Dave quit, retire, or die (possible in the next 5 to ars perhaps) or if Nightline goes away. Later slots are consumed by Kimmel, Fallpn, and Daly.
Cable? Look at the numbers for Conan and George and see if that works for your business plan. TBS won’t take on any more evening talk shows and Comedy Central has got it covered with the fake news (Stewart and Colbert).
Guess that leaves OWN or BET. Yikes!
Oh, thank goodness. Our long national nightmare is almost over.
Aw hell, I say give him a shot, I watched him a couple of times in 90′s, wasn’t bad (better than that hallmark of mediocrity Leno). Worse cas scenario: Arsenio gets cancelled again and we don’t have to be threatened by anymore comebacks. Best case: he makes me laugh at least once, helping me to take my mind off the mundane inanity of my job at the post office. Dammit, why I HATE when people come in at the last minute before closing to buy stamps…
His 11 year old can drive himself to school? Is that supposed to be funny?
Hollywood is rehashing old tv shows. Now they’re rehashing old talk shows? Jesus enough is enough people.
Gotdamn! All the Arsenio haters are in da house. What I say to you haters: FCUK U!
Arsenio is more than welcome back on late-nite talk. His show was the hippest talk show which featured unknown music performers who blew up. Welcome back, bruh.
Co-sign
Great! Maybe Arsenio’s new show can be paired with other talk shows with former hosts like Ric Dees, Magic Johnson, Pat Sajak, Sinbad, Chevy Chase, Spike Feresten and George Lopez — wait, Lopez is still on the air? No way!
….he wasn’t a rapist…he just got laid!!! Every president does!!!!
