Eighty-five-year-old Jerry Lewis took over the room this afternoon during an Encore session at the TCA tour to promote the original feature-length documentary Method to the Madness of Jerry Lewis, slated to premiere this fall. Outfitted with a platform and a microphone, the comedy legend didn’t disappoint, holding court and sparing no opinion about an industry that he believes has lost its way. He refused to confirm that his forthcoming Labor Day Telethon in September would be his last, noting that he’d have a press conference Sept. 5 to discuss not the past but the future (presumably both his and the telethon’s).
Earlier, Lewis rolled off on a tangent about why Hollywood needs fixing. ”This business is scrounging around for what to do,” he said. “The medium is busy knocking its brand out to display the fat lady at 375 pounds (who) in two months is gonna be 240. Who gives a shit?” He continued, “The industry has destroyed themselves. It’s no longer relevant because it puts out all of its product on a stupid phone. You’re going to put ‘Lawrence of Arabia’ on that goddamned stupid sonofabitch?” (Speaking of Twitter and Facebook) “They’re wonderful technical advances. But once people see how much it’s cluttering their life, they’ll figure it out for themselves. … We’re not going to have human beings in 20 years. People won’t be talking to other human beings.
“The spirit of the child is being sucked out of the industry. People all need to remember they have a child within them. If they don’t have some of that in them, an industry will just go by like a strong wind. And that hurts my heart.” Asked if he felt he’d fulfilled his destiny, Lewis concluded, “I’m coming close.” What would nee to happen for him to be satisfied? “Get a cure for muscular dystrophy.”

blahblahblahblah- Just release the nazi clown movie, already!
oh, grandpa, did you miss your afternoon snack?
He is absolutely right. Why am I supposed to care about some out of control pig who can’t stop stuffing donuts in their face or a bunch of plastic gold diggers in New Jersey or Atlanta? What a waste of a medium.
AMEN!! Jerry Lewis is only saying what so many people are thinking.
Jerry Lewis certainly got one thing right: Hollywood is no longer a movie industry; it’s merely an ipad app.
He ALMOST… ALMOST said something relevant!! And then it turns into old man vomit…
Ah well. Hilarious, at any rate.
agreed. They should have renamed the article. “Jerry Lewis comes across a crazy old person……. but if you read between the ramblings he may be on to something.”
P.S. Hell, they don’t even shoot on film anymore!
Yeah, they don’t shoot on film anymore and it’s very sad. The footage looks terrible. I just saw Captain America, one of the biggest budgets for a movie, and they shoot it on Digital. Why? Digital does not handle motion well. It just looks terrible and I think dumb studio heads and wimpy directors are going for ease of production instead of quality of picture. I suppose it makes sense, considering Spielberg Pre-visualizes all his movies now and sits in a trailer five miles from the camera.
God Bless you Jerry!
a lot of truth in what he says..the industry has lost its edge, originality ,its charisma, its chutzpah.. imagination has gone out the window along with morality & common sense..there was a time that each producer had 100′s of scripts sitting on their desks now all they can do is look at rehashed old garbage..the ones that are good are original and leave something to the imagination as a good book does..the child is missing as so eloquently stated by mr. lewis..the mcguffin is gone, paraphrasing mr.hitchcock, nothing left..all mush..get back to the roots of creative writing and let us enjoy some great movies..
Jerry made this exact same observation back in 1974!
Jerry also made the same exact observation back in 1963! Mindbending!
I agree with that statement. This industry is no longer about story and film and magic, it’s about money. They don’t care if it’s good or not, they only care that makes money. Hollywood has lost it’s touch. Screw this town.
it was always about money
art and commerce are not mutually exclusive
when has it not been? It is called show BUSINESS for a reason
Is he irrelevant to you because he’s “Old Hollywood” or just because he’s old?
Hopefully you’ll be treated with a little more respect when you’re 85 years old, have had a successful movie, TV and singing career and have raised million of dollars to help sick kids…
Who are you talking to?
Your balls.
As usual, the legend is right on the money…
Some of what he says is true. Other stuff is typical b.s. from him.
Where is Martin Short when we need him?
Nails one problem that they pointed out on Curb your Enthusiasm.. people who talk in TXT “LOL!” We’re becoming a culture of people who can’t stand to read anything of any length or value, and we want a 140 characters or less explanation of everything
I’m trying to figure out why “That was funny” is a superior way of expressing the sentiment offered by “lol,” and I’ve got to say, I can’t.
English.
The saddest thing about the industry is how it throws away its icons. How disgusting and disrespectful to read the comments here about a man who, like him or not, contributed a great deal to the business.
He’s right. I was just thinking… “hey, it’s Friday, what movie is out? Oh, right, the thing with the guy who was in the thing with that other guy that was funny three years ago and this is the fifteenth version of that movie that was funny three years ago.”
And, whatever reality TV even is anymore? People in crash helmets jumping into shit wrapped in gym pads? WTF is that? Look how fat I am? Look at what an obnoxious bitch I am, in different locations? We’re on an island looking gaunt, part 713? There’s aliens version number 415,653? We are awesome looking models who happen to be cops, number 67,912? We are cops, lawyers, firemen, military, and we have issues, part 550,789? I’m a chick with an conundrum and unique people surrounding me, #927? I am a cook with a serious anger problem? watch us play cards? Beating the piss out of each other in a cage, for your viewing entertainment?
I’ll stop there…
HBO, some Showtime. some AMC, some FX. CNN. PBS. And sports. Everything else? Chuck it/
And yes, with the smallness, why don’t we just get it screened on the inside of our eyeballs, and get it over with?
I don’t know about anybody else, but I have 479 thousand channels, am paying through the nose monthly, and I can’t tell you how many nights I just turn to my wife and say either “nothing is on” (nothing is on?) or “Christ, television sucks.”
Now, yes, kvetch, kvetch, kvetch, and yes, there is some terrific stuff in between the bullshit, but seriously, “Cowboys and Aliens?” Are you fucking kidding me?
Harry Potter latest? Wonderful. Just bloody wonderful. Great, mass entertainment. But, when you see the crap between the good, aka – watch the previews, in any movie theater these days, the endless previews, it’s just rock-stadium loud, shite!
Network TV, is, almost entirely unwatchable. HBO is unbelievable, in that it pulls off great shit, and even the ones you personally don’t take to are in a different league than network. AMC, FX.
I mean, it’s there, if you look. And look. And look. but Lewis is is right:
Laaaaaaaydeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Amen. amen, amen ~~~~~You Said It!!
Word.
And btw saw “C&A” last night at a midnight showing.. awful! Snooozy and lethargic… no momentum at all.
I have said it before, I’ll say it again.
My favorite oxymoron is:Reality…………….Television.
Agree Captain, Kids now have 60″ tv`s that`s not a tv. They stream everything off the net; Games, Netflix, Hulu etc.
The laugh track & 7-9 commercial break have been around since Lucy…it had a nice run.
It’s funny to see all the idiotic comments towards Jerry Lewis, because you know 99% of them are coming from really young idiots. I’m 37 and I remember being in my teens and early 20s, thinking I knew it all. Turns out I didn’t know shit. Still don’t, but I know a lot more now than I did then. Jerry’s 85 and knows a ton more than I do and world’s more than any dumb ass teenager who thinks he’s accomplished a lot by leaving an idiotic comment on a message board. When you hear a giant popping sound, you’ll be a little smarter than you were. That’ll be the sound of you pulling your heads out of your asses.
Amen Jerry’s Kid. Amen.
I agree with him.
I always picture society ending up like the people in WALL-E…fat, no bones or muscles left in the body and floating around on those beds with built in media/pc centers and a Big Gulp cup holder.
This industry values abdominals over trained actors. Fading away are the likes of Gene Hackman, Dustin Hoffman, Christopher Walken etc…
It works because this generation does not ask for talent so much as eye candy. Story is secondary to the big loud explosions and blue people.
Me sad now.
Oh I don’t know, N. Philip Seymour Hoffman. George Clooney. The Coen Bros. My deep chocolate goddess and acting dynamo Viola Davis (have you seen “Doubt”?). Parker Posey. Ben Affleck’s latest directorial efforts. Aaron Eckhart. Matt Damon. Don Cheadle. I like Jeff Bridges more now that he’s an old man than I did back in the 80s and early 90s. The ’90s indie era, by the way, still lives on DVD, Netflix and streaming. I spent all last winter watching those films. There’s still a lot of good shit out there, my friend, don’t give up hope!
In the 90s you had an explosion of independent film. Soderbergh, Tarantino, Rodriguez, Andres, Van Sant, and Lynch and Gilliam were working. Now we have independent film critics. Sad.
I really wish our industry trade news wasn’t available to all the outside internet snipers. It’s Jerry Lewis mother f*ckers! And he speaks a basic truth here.
He may be just that old has-been from the Muscular Distrophy Telethons to the great unwashed but in our business he’s one of the greats. He had a bigger career than most and has survived. How many of you can or will be able to say that? A hundred years from now, there will still be a record of him…how about you? Don’t answer because I don’t care.
When it comes to the industry he is in fact right.
Oh man I love Jerry. he was a great director and actor. I mean look at his films they’re fantastic pure cinema. And he speaks the truth. To hell with the haters. If they make it to his age I hope some young twerp ruins their days with ignorant old man comments. When did being old in America become such a negative when other cultures have respect for their elders.
I’m in total agreement and I’m much younger than Mr. Lewis. Love him, respect him and wish we had talent like him running the networks & the studios!
He may be outspoken but he makes some valid points. Give the man credit, 85 yrs old and still kvetching. 100% agree with him on watching a film like “Lawrence of Arabia” on a screen the size of a postage stamp. Just can’t see it (literally).
Jerry’s been ranting like this since the ’60′s. Funny enough, back in the day he was very big on new technology for his movies and personal life, and liked to tinker with it. However this is the same rant he’s gone on since the ’60′s, complaining about television, X-rated movies, comedians who curse too much, on and on. And I agree The Day the Clown Cried needs to be seen! Bad movie nirvana!
Hollywood has gone to hell in a handbasket and that’s a fact. These stupid reality shows doesn’t help either. Jerry needs to make this telethon his last one and then next year, have Norm Crosby host the thing.
Hey Jerry,
where’s all the telethon money gone? Any progress on that terrible disease that afflicts no one I know nor have every heard of?
You wouldn’t be so glib about “that terrible disease” if you’d ever known anyone who was afflicted by it. And your veiled accusation is just dumb … Jerry Lewis is an honorable person. What do you think he does, spend the telethon dollars on himself? Sad that people are so cynical.
Please do even the most cursory research into Jerry Lewis. You are very, very wrong.
TOMeter=douche.
