Kelsey Grammer is taking a dark turn in his first drama series, Starz’s upcoming Boss, in which he stars as the ruthless mayor of Chicago who is diagnosed with a degenerative mental condition that only he and his doctor know about. The series, which premieres Oct. 21, marks Grammer’s return to television after a two-year break. “I took a break for a while, and there were a lot of reasons I did,” he said. “I decided I needed to make a life change.” As for the genre change from comedy to drama, it may have something to do with his experience on his most recent half-hour series, the short-lived ABC sitcom Hank. “Nobody really liked that,” Grammer said. “It wasn’t really funny.” Grammer even called Warner Bros. TV president Peter Roth. “I asked, ‘How do we put a bullet in this thing?’ ” The experience has been completely different on Boss. “It’s been probably the greatest time of my life, creatively,” Grammer said. “I have said some of the most extraordinary language I’ve said in my life doing this role.” Here is a trailer for the series, written by Farhad Safinia and directed by Gus Van Sant:

This show looks really really cool! And Gus Van Sant directed it?? Im in.
I was at TCA yesterday for a different show and I saw the long trailer for this show and it looks absolutely incredible! And the critics in the room were buzzing and really into it.
Intriguing
Oh hey, West Wing.
He really is a terrible actor. Watched a few minutes of Frasier on mute last night and his acting was so appalling he should have been turned down for a Boise dinner theater production of anything. No idea why the guy continues to get work.
What?????
He was quite funny in Frasier and he’s excellent in Boss.
dr crane, if you didnt think hank was funny, then why on earth did you do it? moron.
This show looks great. Loved Kelsey as Frasier but I can’t wait to see him in a drama!
Not a fan of his by a long shir . But directed by Van Sant ? That sounds intriguing
This is going to be awesome! Can’t wait…. How can you not love Starz?
Will NOT watch him ever again in anything! He has lost my respect as a husband and more importantly, as a father.
This new show looks very, very good but I wish Fox would never have cancelled “Back to You” it was a great comedy unlike “Hank” which must have looked better on paper than it played.
A hardcore Republican like Kelsey Grammer as the mayor of Chicago?
Sorry, a little too ridiculous for me to swallow.
Look, I’m a hardcore liberal, but denigrating a guy because he’s republican and somehow can’t play a traditionally democratic role is what’s ridiculous.
Who the hell cares what Grammer’s background is. He’s an excellent actor, the trailer looks great, so why don’t we just let him have his day?
His VOICE is the only one matching the language of the show and that’s the reason why he was chosen … I guess.
WOW! Some terribly judgmental people read the deadline.com ! Reading how some people call him a bad actor for his political choices, others state dirt because of his personal life, and some other inexplicably blind and or dead-in-humor people calling Frasier unfunny! Everyone’s welcome to their opinions but it sure don’t make it right…..or wrong!
