As Deadline told you yesterday, Marvel Studios needs a director for Thor 2 with Kenneth Branagh departing, but they have got a writer. Marvel has set Don Payne, one of the credited scribes on the first film, to script the sequel. Payne rewrote Lobo for Warner Bros, and was one of the writers on Fantastic Four: Rise Of The Silver Surfer. His superhero experience started with My Super Ex-Girlfriend. Payne’s also co-executive producer on The Simpsons, so there might be a laugh or two in between intergalactic mayhem. Chris Hemsworth is reprising his role as the hammer-swinging hero. The film will be released July 26, 2013 by Disney. Payne’s repped by The Rothman Brecher Agency.

Having seen the first Thor, I think I’ll pass on Bore 2. And from the writer of My Super Ex Girlfriend? Really? There are so many good out of work writers and they scrape the bottom of the barrel.
This should end well.
You win the internet for best comment ever.
Over the last 15 years every writer in Hollywood has re-written LOBO.
Not true. I haven’t. I took a meet — hold on — my phone’s ringing…
Payne wrote the shooting script of Thor but didn’t get credit. Underrated writer and very nice guy.
Actually Don did get credit on Thor.
Marvel has this weird thing where they seem to hand out there first drafts to anyone who’s willing. Glad that get the project started but let me know who gets hired to do the rewrites before i get excited.
Fantastic Four and My Super Ex-Girlfriend? Does not instill confidence.
I hope he wrote the good stuff in Thor because the rest of those credits ended up being films that I didn’t enjoy at all.
Just to clarify, Don Payne hasn’t been an active writer / co-executive producer on The Simpsons since 2007. He started scaling back on his work on the show pretty much when The Simpsons movie came out.
He switched to a consulting producer role in the following seasons. He also hasn’t written a Simpsons script since 2009, particularly due to his focus on superhero film projects.
Instead of making “Thor 2″ funny, he should consider making “The Simpsons” funny.
Man, I hope his draft wasn’t the shooting script for Fantastic Four 2, because that movie BLOOOOOOOOOOOWS!
Really? It’s not like there aren’t good writers out there. I guess Marvel’s just figuring that they can make money off any only comic book slop they toss out there.
Wow. Those are some…interesting movies he’s written.
Congrats.
Hire J. Michael Straczynski He has written movies, tv and The comic book Thor. Perfect choice for this.
ARE YOU KIDDING?!! THAT MAKES TOO MUCH SENSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Straczynski isn’t available because he stopped working for Marvel 2 or 3 years ago, when he was writing Amazing Spider-Man and Marvel Chief Joe Quesada DEMANDED that Straczynski retcon Peter Parker’s 20+ year marriage to Mary-Jane.Quesada felt that a wife somehow held Peter back. (See the “One More Day” arc, 2007.)
Unless you can make it fantastically lucrative for Unca Joe, he ain’t going to be working for Marvel again any time soon.Straczynski now works for DC, writing both Supermanand Wonder Woman.

Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. More like Fantastic Not!: Fall of a Franchise. Ragnarok, thy name is Don Payne.
There wont be a “laugh or two” if Don Payne is writing.
Can’t wait. For the movie about a guy and his hammer. His super hammer I mean. I. cannot. wait.
I’m not naive, but my comment will come off as naive, but that’s okay, since this is just an anon message board…
Studios like Marvel should have a newbie writer draft the first crack at an established superhero or character picture. It’s just like how there is no sense in hiring a big name to play an already established character. Newbie writers will offer a fresh or genuine take on the character as well.
Fantastic Four: Rise Of The Silver Surfer and My Super Ex-Girlfriend were shit.
You are being kind.
Don Payne did a great job on THOR, FF 2 and his spec for SUPER EX was hilarious! THOR 2 is in safe hands!
I liked the Fantastic Four movies for what they were, or at least because they weren’t as bad as the Roger Corman thing, but the second one felt like over-priced fan-fiction.
THE MIGHTY THOR…likes men…..big smelly men.
The original Don Payne script for My Super Ex-Girlfriend was actually pretty funny, but it was ruined during production when the director let one of the lead and supporting actors rewrite through improv and change story points.
Liked thor a lot. Marvel there are plenty of gteat writers out there. A continued love story is too predictable. Stick with the obvious…thor rules his kingdom…leads epic battle and conquers over evil…
Wait… I would not want those movies on my resume.
Chris Hemsworth looks like some muscle-bound moron who was recruited from Venice Beach! Wouldn’t it be nice if they cast someone who at least APPEARED to have some intelligence behind the eyes?
He will fuck it up. The dumbasses at Marvel outsmarted themselves by screwing up the story so badly that even diehard fans like me hated the film. DC doesn’t rewrite their properties.
DC movies also don’t make money.
Marvel’s movies have been destroying the schlock from DC.
You forget about Crisis on Infinite Earths don’t you?
