We told you a week or so ago that James Spader was returning to NBC’s The Office in a boss role after his memorable guest stint at Robert California last season, but outlets like The Hollywood Reporter got it wrong when they reported he was arriving to replace Steve Carell. He will actually be the CEO of Sabre, the parent company of Dunder Mifflin. From the release:
UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. (July 6, 2011) Multiple Emmy Award winner James Spader (“Boston Legal,” “The Practice”) will be joining the regular cast of NBC’s “The Office” (Thursdays, 9-9:30 p.m. ET) as CEO Robert California of Sabre, the parent company of Dunder Mifflin.
“James will reprise his role as Robert California, this uber-salesman that has a power to convince and manipulate, like a high-class weirdo Jedi warrior,” said Paul Lieberstein, one of the series’ executive producers and a series regular. “He’ll have been hired over the summer as the new manager, but within hours, got himself promoted. Within days, he took over the company. James has an energy that is completely his own, and ‘The Office’ has no tools for dealing with this guy. We’re thrilled he’s joining our cast.”
From 2004-08, Spader won three Emmy awards for his seminal role as shameless attorney Alan Shore in “The Practice” and “Boston Legal,” making him the only actor to win consecutive Emmys playing the same character on two different series. He is represented at ICM and Melanie Cook.
“The Office” is executive-produced by Ben Silverman, Greg Daniels, who developed the series for American audiences, Ricky Gervais, Stephen Merchant, Howard Klein and Paul Lieberstein.

Now it’s worth watching The Office.
Give him the Emmy now.
He was the highlight of last season’s finale. I can not wait to see him and Dwight battle it out.
What’s that smell? Emmy, that’s what.
Dwight – you’ve met your match! The Alpha Dog is ready to rock Dunder-Mifflin.
Okay, well, even though he isn’t technically replacing “Michael Scott” as manager, are we sure it’s not safe to say that he’s replacing Steve Carrell?
I mean, are they really going to add ANOTHER regular in the manager job if Spader is going to be a regular (and will be the boss of said manager?)
All of Michael’s previous bosses – Jan Levenson, David Wallace, Kathy Bates – were recurring.
Seems like it would get crowded AND confusing to have too many extra characters, particularly as multiple bosses to the rest of the cast.
So maybe he IS going to be the sole new regular – but to mix things up a little bit and not install “just” another manager, the “Office” team is promoting this character to CEO.
Perhaps Jim or another character will find themselves the technical manager, but without any real power since Spader’s character will be there permanently.
I’m really hoping your theory is correct. I think it would be the smartest move.
That sounds about right. I think it makes more sense – and will allow for a more natural succession to Carrell’s exit – to have the new top-dog in a higher role, and have one of the main cast members be promoted. Jim is really the only one who would make sense, and even though he declined the opportunity late last season, surely something could be written in to have him change his mind. It’d make much more sense than having to retcon Dwight’s failed one-episode run as manager. Actually, it could be somewhat of a throwback to some of the better seasons as Dwight would be actively working to undermine Jim, but could also show growth for Jim as he would not be in Scott/Carrell’s shadow.
Sorry for rambling there.
Holy F**K. The Office just became must-see TV for me this fall! James Spader?! WOOOHOOOOOOO
Love the Show (though it used to be a lot better) and like the casting of Spader, but enough drawing out the whole “who will be the new manager” question. It isn’t enough we went through an entire season of the question?
Write the role then add an actor/actress (known or unknown) already.
This is great news! I love Spader and he was a hoot in the season finale. Good work NBC!
Spot on, as always!!!
Now I’ll even consider watching The Office. But more importantly…time for Boston Legal – The Revival.
This is great, i take back my prediction that The Office will be canceled at the end of the season.
I’ve never watched the Office, but that will change in September! Adding James Spader to the cast will no doubt add to the Offices’ appeal to the Spadernatic’s delight. We have missed seeing James on a weekly basis. James’s new “look” reminds me of his previous “bad-boy” characters, so this should be interesting. As in Eddie Dutra (The New Kids ), Rip in (Less Than Zero),or even E. Edward Grey (Secretary). James possesses an intensity, directness and the ability for his characters to “see” into the minds of the person in his dialogue that is uncanny.
James, we will be so happy to see you on T.V. once again.
Wow, you really dug deep when you referenced Spader in THE NEW KIDS. I haven’t seen that movie in 25 years.
NOW, i can watch the office without throwing up.
I must be alone in not wanting James Spader on the show. He was the worst part of the finale and I was quite happy to see the back of him. He’s just not a good fit, these are all the sort of people we know and work with, obviously drawn out to broader comedy strokes, but how many people work with some ‘uber-salesman jedi?’
Just goes to show you humor and taste are very subjective. For me, Spader was the finale highlight.
that man is just so watchable.
Welcome Spader, but Andy Bernard (Ed Helms) will actually replace Michael Scott as head of The Office
Dwight will be the replacement for Michael Scott, actually.
this man has crafted such an interesting career and definitely not taken the easy route. bravo, he’ll be fabulous!
The press release is wrong- it says Spader is the only actor to win consecutive Emmys for playing the same character on two different series. Actually, Shatner did the same thing in the same years as Spader did, and (of course0 on the same shows, The Practice & Boston Legal.
I think Spader is a good choice for The Office.
True… Though, to be fair, Shatner’s first win was a Guest Actor Emmy as he wasn’t a series regular on “The Practice.”
Technically, you are correct. What the release should have said is that Spader was the only actor to win the same Emmy for the same character in two different series. While Shatner won both for playing Denny Crane, he won for Outstanding Guest Actor in “The Practice” and Outstanding Supporting Actor in “Boston Legal”. Spader won for Outstanding Lead Actor in both.
ALTHOUGH the episode where Dwight was the new boss – was solid and def made me notice the goodness that could be.
Was never a fan of Spader – but he certainly nailed it in the season finale! Looking forward to September!
Ever since “Mannequin,” I knew that Spader had some serious comic chops. Bravo!
