Last month True Blood leading man Stephen Moyer signaled his intent to exit ICM. Now the agency pursuit has ended with the UK-born actor signing with UTA. Besides Season Four of True Blood, Moyer has the indie film The Caller coming out later this year. He continues to be repped by manager Lena Roklin, UK-based agent Dallas Smith, and attorney Dave Feldman.

ICM is just pathetic at this point – they will be irrelevant in 5 years….everyone is running off that ship – and no, I don’t work at a rival agency….
I don’t work for them either, but I am someone that puts people in movies. It makes no difference where someone is repped. None. Agencies pretend they “package”. Yeah, they package indies, sometimes.
Directors put actors in movies.
Any agent at ICM can get me on the phone to discuss a client or have a client come audition or send in a tape.
And at that, it is up to the actor. Can’t always blames agents or agencies is my point.
Stephen Moyer will have the same opps with ICM as he will with UTA. If I wanted him in a movie, i’d call whoever reps him.
So don’t be so quick to assume an agency is dead because somebody leaves. It just makes it THAT much easier for rival agencies to poach from ICM – but it makes no difference in terms of getting roles.
wow! why cant you just wish the guy well?
I was commenting on the comment above saying ICM is pathetic. My message had nothing to do with Moyer, I don’t know the guy but I wish him well.
Mary, you’re crazy. It does matter. Believe it or not, some agents are better than others. It’s not just luck that some people book more, have better lists or make richer deals.
And believe it or not, there are great agents everywhere. Even ICM and UTA.
If an agent is just calling a casting director and running a list of names they’re not doing their job or properly representing their client (and I’m not saying that’s what happened here). Agents sell and there are many people that need to be sold on every decision.
It’s rarely (read: almost never) just a director that casts any role in a film. Even triple A list filmmakers have to run decisions by the studio and producers and everybody has an asshole and an opinion.
But bottom line — even if it is just some agent floating a name by me, I’m going to take that call a hell of a lot more seriously if it’s Bryan Lourd (or Patrick Whitesell or whoever…) calling to pitch a client compared to some covering agent at [insert agency name here], because eventually I’m going to have to tell Bryan “no” in the nicest way possible and he’s going to remember.
Wow, a rational response on the deadline comments board. I’m shocked. I would hope we can all agree that there are good and bad agents out there and some agencies as a whole are better than others.
This is simply not true.
I will guess that you are late 20′s and haven’t put too many movies together. “Believe it or not some agents are better than others” – of course I know this. But it has no bearing of whether I want their clients in a movie.
And of course you name Patrick and Bryan to make your point but neither one of them will be calling for Moyer to put him in a movie. And if Patrick calls to put actor x in something that is not right for the director – the answer is no. Directors did not pursue their dream to put actors in movies to appease an agent. They are the ones that have to work on the movie for 2+ years and their their name will always be associated with the film, not the agents name.
You are just wrong here. If PW or BL call, of course you meet their client, seriously consider but if it’s not right, it’s not right. Has nothing to do with a fear of saying ‘no’.
Keep drinking the kool-aid that agents put clients in movies. They don’t, they put them in rooms – then it’s up to the client.
Come on Mary… How many times has someone called you with the worst idea in the world and then over time it becomes an okay idea and finally that person gets the part and everyone is kind of excited about it? I feel like it happens at least once a movie. Sometimes it feels like it happens on every role we cast.
Maybe you’re not a part of these discussions.
kind of want to agree with both of you a little. but you gotta give credit to the agent for getting their client in the room in the first place. and even beyond that, there’s a difference between just getting your client in front of a casting director to read or getting an actor in front of a studio exec or producer for a meeting or setting up a coffee etc. with a filmmaker. if you can’t appreciate good agenting when you see it, you’re not really in the business or it’s just really, really great agenting.
Agree with SJ
I think his/her point was if a big agent calls, you consider the actor a little more no matter what, but if it’s an actor you don’t care about and an agent who doesn’t matter you can file it under who gives a shit. They said at the end they’re still going to say no if it’s not right. Pretty valid point.
Honestly, who cares about Stephen Moyer? He will be irrelevant after TRUE BLOOD ends and he is an old, hard sell for hiatus movies. Have fun UTA junior agents.
For somebody who professes not to care, you took the time to comment with a pretty hostile assessment of the guy!
But you make two good points – he is getting older, and isn’t getting great projects on his hiatus. All the more reason why someone would change agencies. The guy is probably on the most high profile project of his career w/ True Blood – who can blame him for wanting a more aggressive team to get him better projects?
There are a lot of us who do care and who buy tickets. Forty-one is old? I guess it would seem so to a twelve-year-old. Don’t know much about demographics, do ya, kid?
My grandfather is 41. He rarely goes to movies.
Well the proof will be in the pudding if/when we read that he’s gotten a good role or two during this hiatus.
I’m actually surprised he hasn’t had more of a True Blood-bump in terms of other projects before now. Go to any event around town this guy is at, and he seems to be genuinely well liked by most of the room. I hope the move to UTA makes the difference for him.
Moyer should be cast as Roland Deschain in The Dark Tower Movie.
I agree, hr would be perfect!!!!!
i know what you mean. stephen seems to like some of the ‘darker’ roles altho i’m not familiar with this role. I’d love to see him in a rom-com or at the center of a drama. he’s really quite sexy. have you seen him in Lilies, Restraint and Empathy?
