EXCLUSIVE: After a feverish day-long bidding battle, I’m hearing that Universal Pictures is closing a 7-figure deal for an untitled comedy that will have Seth Rogen and Zac Efron attached to star. Rogen and Evan Goldberg will produce through their Point Grey Pictures banner. I’m told that this was an incredible deal that capitalized on the R-rated successes of the summer, and that beyond the 7-figures for writers Andrew Cohen and Brendan O’Brien, Rogen will be paid $8 million with a separate low seven-figure producing fee.
Several studios bid on the pitch that will be written by Cohen and O’Brien, who, like Rogen and Goldberg, are Judd Apatow proteges. Cohen and O’Brien will be executive producers. The pitch will be an R-rated comedy that has the tone of Old School. Rogen plays a regular guy who lives near an alpha male fraternity house. Efron is a member of the fraternity, whose raucous behavior wreaks havoc on the other guy’s family life. The scribes hatched the idea and brought it to Goldberg and it was packaged with Efron and Rogen. The bidding came down to Universal and New Line. Uni made Bridesmaids and New Line made Horrible Bosses, both of which were big R-rated hits. CAA and Alchemy Entertainment repped Efron, and CAA repped the writers. UTA and Principal repped Rogen and UTA repped Goldberg.

I ? Zac
This will make a nice nest egg for Seth… seems retirement is in the VERY near future.
Good Lord go Zac Efron! Rob Pattinson and Zac seem to be the only hearthrobs that are making it outside of “tween land.” Knew there was always a reason I liked this guy. Good for him. Happy to see him getting good work and work that is for a grown man.
I loved Zac in ME AND ORSON WELLS. Too bad I’m the only one who saw the movie. He’ll be around for a while.
Good to see Rogen moving toward Adulthood.
That’s b/c Linklater doesn’t make bad movies.
Rogen, on the other hand…
Abby = Zac Efron’s agent’s assistant bucking for a promotion
How would that comment help anyone get a promotion? I know it’s hard to believe anyone would post anything positive on a Deadline comment board unless they were paid to but c’mon, if your instinct is to hate on everything posted here you might want to check yourself… That goes for 85% of the commenters on here. You guys are exhausting
Haha I wish lol. No but really, him and Rob seem like the only “hearthrobs” that are making it. What happen to all the other ones?
“What happened to all the other ones?”….Efron and Pattinson are the only two young male actors in Hollywood right now who have built a career based solely on tween heartthrob appeal, so it stands to reason there’s more focus on them right now to see if they can survive in the adult world.
As far as “them making it”, they still have a LONG way to go before you can assume they’ve made it. Neither one of them have the ability to post big BO numbers outside of the franchises that made them famous. There’s still time for them to end up being flashes in the Hollywood pan. Efron and his team seem to have realized this fact though. Pattinson and his team…..not so much.
I also want to add that Efron’s team need to get the guy some head shots made that don’t look like a goddamned Ambercrombie & Fitch ad.
Seriously guys, do you honestly think male producers/casting directors will look at that shot above and say, “Now there’s a guy the average American male can relate to.”….no, they don’t. If you want to sell this guy outside of the tween heartthrob status, then push an image the doesn’t remind people of it.
Where does one apply to become a Judd Apatow protegé?
Step one, be Jewish.
Jewish like Brendan O’Brien? Maybe if you weren’t too caught up in hating you’d be allowed to play in the club too.
you got that right.
—–deadline hates me.
Funny how Rogen gets an extra million for “producing”. With the exception of guys like Will Smith or Tom Cruise, most actors who “produce” just sign their name up to be used as leverage to get the film made and then snag a producing credit and fee for doing not much more than that. Gotta love Hollywood.
good thing this didn’t end up at new line although i’m not so sure universal is the lesser of the two evils
Boy are places like pye crying. These are the comedy stars of today.
I love these two, so I’ll be seeing this as soon as it comes out.
Another great step in the right direction for Zac Efrons film career. He has consistantly played roles outside the teen demographic and gone against type. Zac reminds me a young Leo DiCaprio.
You’re shitting me, right?
I got nothing against Efron. In fact, I think he’s a good actor. But DiCaprio had a much deserved Oscar-nod (Gilbert Grape) by 19 and is one of those rare talents that come along once in a generation.
That’s like comparing Robert Pattinson with Robert DeNiro.
Solly Cholly…
Jobu = cynic.
Love, someone else (over the age of twenty-five) glad Efron is making smart choices.
Why isn’t Zac producing this to?
Just amazing. So, Kristen Wiig, Zach G., and Charlie Day succeed and Seth Rogen reaps the benefits? Unbelievable. I guess no one looks at Rogen’s downward spiral or reads the comments from viewers who can’t stand him. Oh, and Zac Efron will add maybe 10.50 in ticket sales as well based on his track record. Unbelievable. What a bunch of tools Hollywood development people are.
I don’t care for Seth Rogen that much (he’s quite grating) but wasn’t it The 40 Year Old Virgin, Superbad and Knocked Up that really revitalized this R-Rated comedy thing? So one could argue that Wiig, Zach G and Charlie Day reaped the benefits of the Apatow crew and now it is coming round full-circle. No harm there. And Zac Efron’s comedy 17 Again did fine. I won’t argue against Hollywood being full of tools though.
Omigod! What an AMAZINGLY SMART choice for Zac. I mean, a rowdy frat boy?! Wow! It’s great to see him really stepping out to do something risky… I bet he even chugs lots of beer and bags lots of babes and maybe even farts alot too! Way to go, Zac – genius move… you’re simply amazing.
Good for Conan O’Brien
so basically this will be the same seth rogen movie we’ve all seen:
bumbling loser finds purpose in life and becomes “successful” by the end.
knocked up – bumbling loser becomes good dad
observe & report – bumbling loser mall cop saves the mall and becomes successful
zack & miri make a porno – ” ” creates successful porno
funny people – ” ” starts writing comedy for big star and becomes famous
green hornet – ” ” billionaire’s dad dies, becomes green hornet.
am i forgetting any?
What, no Green Hornet sequel? Even Nic Cage’s Ghost Rider got one.
yay,zac efron in this movie. buuut,is comedy the right thing to do ? He did a lot of drama and he has signed loads of new drama movies, which is not thaaat good. drama yeah as a significant actor but not only :S I want him to make a career like leo di caprio did. jesus, that guy started with sappy TITANIC !! and is now doing stuff like shutter island & co. efron has to find out HOW leo did this and just do the same.
even in his private life he acts like leo,by saying no marriage til 40 and no kids till well 30 or so. hope efron makes a career like leo, but some different private life. I hate these men like george clooney who are mid fifty and dating a 20 year old whos only looking for fame&money.
This is a great choice for Zac. Congrats to him
Nice to see some more rated stuff coming.
Sad to see Uni totally effing up how to do it tho — namely you make it for 20-30 mil like bad teacher or horrible bosses.
You don’t drop 10 mil on Seth Rogan who just as many people cant stand as like. You give him a million and points like Cameron Diaz in Bad Teacher. If he doesn’t like it, screw’em and give it to someone else who is actually funny.
R-rated comedies tote a fine line when the price tag gets up too high. A couple bombs on 50-60 with production budgets with matching advertising and they go away again as not viable.
Then again, this is the same studio that spent 100 mil + after Ads on Scott Pilgrim.
Will be interested to see how effron does tho. Seems like a nice enough kid.
Well said Kid A!
Is Seth Rogen , a Comedian anymore , or now just a Rich Frat Boy ?!
I love how people think Efron’s made ‘wise choices’ in his career, which besides one wise choice he’s totally been stupid and then on top of that, he’s play ONE kind of character. Take a risk dude. Stop relying on your looks to sell a film.
Same old thing; its tiring….
+114
Gotta love any pitch that begins with “Seth Rogen is a regular guy”. Let me guess there will be a scene where Seth needs to get some sleep but the music is blaring from the frat house.
You’re spot on with that assessment. Hollywood is nothing if not formulaic. If it worked once, then it must always be funny….right?!
