EXCLUSIVE: A couple of weeks ago, Deadline reported that USA Network was finalizing a series pickup of the comedic buddy cop comedy Common Law. And now it has: USA has ordered 11 episodes to begin production next month in New Orleans. The twist on the cop series stars Michael Ealy and Warren Kole, who play wildly different personalities who are the elite team in the LAPD homicide squad until their constant bickering gets them put on probation. To fix their problems, their captain (Jack McGee) sends them to couples therapy. Common Law, from CBS Television Studios and Junction Entertainment, is executive produced by Cormac and Marianne Wibberley. Jon Turteltaub and Craig Sweeny are executive producers. Junction’s Dan Shotz and Karim Zreik are co-executive producers. Turteltaub directed the pilot. ”When CBS Television Studios sent us the script of Common Law, we immediately fell in love with the writing, the characters and the premise,” USA Network co-presidents Jeff Wachtel and Chris McCumber said. “We’re very lucky to have the Wibberleys, Jon and Craig guiding the process on this show; and with Michael and Warren, we have two stars who bring out the best in each other.” Common Law was one of three cast-contingent pilots ordered by USA last summer, along with Necessary Roughness and Suits (formerly A Legal Mind). The other two have already been picked up to series.

They’re on a roll!
show set in LA shot in New Orleans? what kind of tax break they got down there?
Exactly. A show set in Los Angeles and filmed in New Orleans? Count me out.
Necessary Roughness is set on Long Island and shoots in Atlanta. As someone who works in NYC, I hate to admit this: you really couldn’t tell the difference in the pilot.
Somebody please change the blander than bland title.
Well, that would cause a “characters welcome” implosion at USA. They like their bland titles.
Why eleven episodes? It doesn’t feel like a complete season…just give them the standard 13 for a cable season. It just feels right.
I’m guessing it’s 11 eps because USA pilots are usually 2 hr pilots. There’s your 13 hrs of programming.
That’s only 12 hours lol. Eleven episodes all an hour long except for one which is 2 hours.
Sounds fun
Is Amy Acker still in it or is she gone for good?
she is out
I would normally say that “buddy cop shows” are overplayed. But I think this one may have enough of new spin on it to be different and interesting. I will definitely give Common Law a shot before ruling it out.
good job bela and cbs….
I’ve got to think USA will be cutting some shows loose over the next few months. Fairly Legal, Necessary Roughness and I’m sure Common Law will be fine shows, but they seem to cover a lot of the same turf.
mediocre show at best. should be better than it is. writing is good but the casting is horrible.
shut up bitter actor…
The name implies that the detective are common law married-perhaps from living together too long or because they are lovers. A gay cop couple show would be really funny.
Why can’t I find it on my tv?
I am very pleased that CBS picked up Common Law for 11 episodes. It is my new favorite show and one of the reasons CBS is my favorite network.
I hope CBS will show repeats.
I thoroughly enjoyed this show. There is mystery and comedy and I love the bantering between Wes and Travis. I watch what I taped whenever I need a feel good moment, It feels good to laugh. I hope there are many seasons to come.
