EXCLUSIVE: USA Network has passed on its pilot Eden. The hourlong project, from Universal Cable Prods. and writers Ken and Mary Hanes, centered on a young hotel worker (Nick D’Agosto) who, with the help of his escaped con artist cousin (Enver Gjokaj), gets a job as the concierge at an elite NYC hotel. Together they manage to provide the hotel guests with whatever they desire. Eden is the first USA pilot to get a pass this cycle, which included 2 batches of 3 pilots each. All 3 pilots from the first group, Necessary Roughness, Common Law and A Legal Mind, have been picked up to series. The remaining 2 pilots from the second batch, Over/Under and Wild Card, which were ordered at the same time as Eden in November, have been cast but not shot yet, with filming eyed for late August.

The premise sounds pretty lame. I think USA did right by passing on it.
That’s too bad for Enver Gjokaj, though I never really saw him as a fit for USA. He’s more suited for an FX, HBO, Showtime, AMC, or even TNT series. Too talented to be overlooked, that’s for sure. I hope he lands a nice recur on one of the better series to pass his time.
Mr. Karma Ken Hanes & Mrs. Manic Mary Hanes thought they hit the motherload on this show.
Their hard working reps @ The Alpern Group got the Hanes this pilot, and then dumped them faster than a tango dancer in Buenos Aires because a bunch of young punks at UTA promised them sweet nothings.
Empty promises.
There’s a lesson to be learned here Mr. & Mrs. Hanes…KARMA.
Alpern had nothing to do with setting up the pilot. Their manager developed it on spec and set it up at UCP/USA. And leaving a small agency for a bigger one is the oldest story in the book. It’s part of the business. I’m tired of reading the same lame comments when a writer leaves a small agency. It’s like a broken record with the whining. Not to mention, I’ve heard Ken & Mary are two of the most genuine, nicest people around. It’s a bummer for them. I’d rather root for good things to happen to good people in this town.
I agree about Enver. I always thought he’d do great on SNL, where he could do different characters like he did on Dollhouse. His “Topher” and “KiKi” were nothing short of amazing. Barring that, he’d be a good fit on Leverage as a Grifter relative of Sophie’s.
Worked with the Hanes on Eden and they were wonderful. Gracious, supportive, fun, smart, and caring. I’d work with again in a second.
If you want Hotel Babylon, then watch Hotel Babylon, although it did get ridiculous after the first season.
USA hasn’t really launched a bad series yet. It would’ve been cool to see them actually order a series, have it air for 8, 10, 13 episodes… whatever… and have to cancel it. It would show that they actually make mistakes. I’m digging WAY too much of their original programming right now it’s INSANE.
I’m sure the Hanes’ are nice people and lovely to work with but saw the pilot and it just wasn’t that good. The main 2 actors were OK but that was about it. Wanted to like it so maybe I’ll check out Hotel Babylon.
It may have been a casting issue. Nick and Enver are certainly talented, but the drama in the script was more about moral and ethical problems. Casting those two just made it about, well, obvious problems. They had Eric Winter and Josh Casaubon at the test, I guess as the good-looking option. Could have been more interesting. Who knows? Monday morning quarterbacking. Either way, I wish them all the best.
What a shame. I like Enver Gjokaj and want him on my TV again.
Bummer this show isn’t going forward. The pilot was really good. The Hanes are lovely and talented and their manager is awesome!
I worked with them on the pilot and found them to be completely uncommunicative. If Ken & Mary want success, they need to act like leaders/showrunner and communicate with people. Hiding behind a wall, not returning calls, not responding to notes, not responding to material only contributes to confusion. Being nice is subjective at best and only part of the equation. Being reliable and loyal is the salient point. Let’s see what happens next and how UTA steps up and delivers.
As a working writer with a great manager who is looking to sign with an agency, I’d say they are indeed lucky to have made a move before this pilot was officially dead.
Dang. It would have been great on USA… They could have done a cross-over with White Collar.
Working with Ken and Mary on this pilot was a positive in every way, and I have two new friends after the experience. I hope we get to do another one.
They wouldn’t pick up a series without it being a two-word title.
Suits!
Just watched the pilot it was good I would have dvr.r it too bad for usa their loss
I watched this pilot and I actually enjoyed it. I think they did the wrong thing by passing on this. I was glued to my tv set watching this. IM SO DISAPPOINTED.
Just saw the pilot of edan this evening on usa–never saw it until tonight. I have no idea who wrote it or how the people are casted in tv shows. I will say that i thought it was great. If was very real in part and funny in others. Too bad thers wont be anymore shows. I thought it was great.
Just saw the pilot tonight on USA. The premise for this show was great…who doesn’t love a beautiful hotel in New York? The complex weaving together of several stories is tried and true formula, where many “guests” all experiencing the same venue walk away happy and satisfied ala Fantasy Island and The Love Boat? The characters, casting, and acting were all top notch. This show would be a colossal hot if the “bad guy,” Eddie, wasn’t quite so bad. It’s hard to like his character him being a
murderer, slut chaser, and louse to a beautiful woman and all. The buddy shows like Psych, Royal Pains, and White Collar all work because the “quirky” buddy is still a likable character, unlike Eddie, who I couldn’t wait to see go back to prison. Please rework this show and try again. It has promise.
Music a little too
I just saw the pilot it aired ask a 2 hour movie and wa hoping it would be a series. They pulled it off really well. Plus it was thing other than cop, lawyer, doctor, plots used way too much. Think of any five shows and your bound to fit 4 of them into one of those categories.
I watched the pilot last night and actually thought it was pretty good, too bad USA didn’t pick up the show.
Watched Eden last night and liked it. USA should move forward with the series!!!!
I actually just watched the pilot last night on the USA network. Had to search this morning to find out when it was coming, and was greatly disappointed to see it wasn’t picked up. I think it would have made a good show. For Atleast one season anyway. I think USA wanted something that could have longevity to it and this show seemed like it could only go for a season.
I kind of remembered seeing a promo for this series, but just watched the pilot the other night. It was really excellent, a great set up which made me look for the other episodes… only to find out that they were never made. USA has done an excellent job with their original programming, but I wish they would continue on with this one as well.
I just saw the pilot for Eden and really enjoyed it. I wish they’d gone further with it.
