NBC didn’t spill any secrets about the unnamed hourlong prime time news program that Brian Williams is developing when it announced today that former CBS News anchor Harry Smith will join the team as “one of the correspondents.” The show’s exact format is still a mystery, although NBC News president Steve Capus says that Smith’s “vast experience, covering everything from interviews with world leaders to wars and natural disasters, makes him a perfect fit for this new broadcast,” which will also feature NBC News, MSNBC and CNBC anchors and correspondents. NBC’s praise must be refreshing for Smith to hear. In January, CBS pared back his role at The Early Show. CBS put Chris Wragge and Erica Hill in as anchors, replacing Smith and Maggie Rodriguez, in an effort to narrow the ratings gap with NBC’s Today and ABC’s Good Morning America. Smith had hosted CBS’s This Morning from 1987 to 1996 and hosted The Early Show since 2002. In a memo to staffers last week, CBS News president David Rhodes called Smith ”a fixture here at CBS News for a generation” who had made “an extraordinary contribution.”

Tuned into the CBS morning show the other day, for the first time in over a year, and I’m astounded that nothing has changed. If CBS thought Harry Smith was the sole problem with ratings, then they are sorely mistaken. The entire format still reaks of local origination programming, as opposed to a national broadcast network’s morning show. CBS network execs need to fire the entire lot in charge of that morning show and start from scratch.
Curious to see what Harry Smith can deliver with NBC. His moving on from CBS may end up being the best thing that ever happened to his career. Even if it was a move from morning news anchor to correspondant.
Agreed with both G and Rome with an asterisk.
Harry always struck me as a soft news guy to begin with. I was not really comfortable with Harry in “the big chair” same as with Diane Sawyer and Katie. They are just morning show/news-magazine types. This isn’t meant as a slam on them; what they did well in the mornings, they did very well but it doesn’t carry over to the hard/evening news. And “The Morning Show” has actually gotten worse (if that’s possible) since the lineup change. It does feel like a local morning TV show.
A news-magazine should be just great for Harry. As a morning news host, it should be an easy adjustment. And Scott Pelley should be great in Walter’s chair; like the guy. Will miss him on “60 Minutes.”
Harry felt like the jilted girlfriend when the eye went with Pelly.
Harry’s cool. I think Harry will uproot Lester Holt on Weekend Today.
Not to pee in your Pralines and Cream ice cream, Mr. Rome, but why indeed would Harry usurp Mr. Holt, an onscreen presence who exudes both cool intelligence, deft articulation and all-around competence? I mean, I like them both but knocking out Les for Harry is a wash, and makes no sense. They are BOTH good. So, I give Les the nod on the ‘diversity tiebreaker’ if you will. God knows there are hardly any men of color in network anchor chairs these days. At least there are a few blacks (Les and Don Lemon come to mind) but Asian American men have been AWOL from the network anchor chair (not to mention the American Big Screen, aside from, of course, kung-fu theme or Fast and Furious-type mind-numbing fare) for far too long. I can only wonder why this is so….
Diversity my ass. Lester is awesome! How i wish the Today show would do away with Ann Curry and replace her with Lester!
I would LOVE to see more of Lester Holt on air. I am terrified that NBC will put Harry Smith on for what are some of Lester’s appearances…filling in for Brian Williams, for example. I sure hope Lester gets more face time soon.
Great pickup at NBC as he should have been the one, not Pelley, to head CBS Evening News.
Yo Bobby the Saint or St. Elsewhere, Not to doo-doo in your Pralines and ice cream. I could care less who replace who. Les is a cool brotha who I want to see stay, NBC has to make Harry earn his pay. Networks do crazy things.
I suspect this NBC magazine program will premiere next January.
I wonder if it will replace or succeed “Dateline NBC”??
I always thought that Harry would be theeventual anchor for Sunday Morning on CBS.
I bet it will be a hit piece on the Republicans or something to futher the annointed one’s agenda.
Considering CBS literally stuck a camera up his ass, I’d say pretty much any position will be more dignified, unless NBC sends him out to report on a dildo factory or something.
I like harry smith a lot…..I sure hope he gets a good run with nbc because cbs pushed him around a lot…I wonder who is running that network. les or julie………
Great For NBC. Can no one figure out that CBS woes is from the top? Harry Smith is a jewel.
