It’s Official: News Corp Withdraws BSkyB Bid
Will U.S. Officials Now Investigate Murdoch?
So what now for Rupert Murdoch? Well, he’ll have a lot more cash to play with now that he has decided to scrap his $14 billion acquisition of the BSkyB shares that he doesn’t already own. He’ll probably look for something else to buy, possibly in education services — his new passion. You can be sure that it won’t be an asset that would require him to seek approval from government officials. But his shareholders also are eager to get their hands on some of that loot. Murdoch tried to appease them yesterday by announcing that News Corp would buy back $5B worth of its own stock. Don’t be surprised if they start lobbying for higher dividends too. Murdoch may have to give them what they want if News Corp’s stock price falls as questions arise about his management, the quality of the board of directors’ oversight — and, especially, succession plans.
Some analysts say the Murdoch’s defeat may lead him to think about selling, not buying. His newspapers, once his proudest possession, could be seen as too much trouble. Nomura Equity Research’s Michael Nathanson says in a report today that the newspapers are “highly inconsequential” for the entertainment company. What’s more, now that BSkyB is out of the picture, Murdoch may want to persuade investors that News Corp’s beaten-up stock is a bargain. The shares are trading 11% below the market average based on the ratio of price-to-earnings. They’re up 2.9% in mid-day trading, ahead of the overall market.

great. now education according to Faux Snooze. Just what everyone needs. Breeding future morons of the world
Let’s hope 4000 hacking victims sue Murdoch individually and he doesn’t have much money left to buy into education services.
They would have to sue individually now too, wouldn’t they? Otherwise the Supreme court would say they’re are “Too many variables” in the case. Unless of course all the plaintiffs incorportate. Then the court would view them as a person.
Oops, forgot the plaintiffs are in England. They’re still people in the eyes of the law as far as I know.
Don’t worry. “Coming soon to a U.S. courtroom – News Corp. allegedly hacks 9/11 victims cellphones!” He’ll be lucky if he’s still in charge of News Corp. a year from now.
“Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.”
Just might be interested in Yahoo!!!!
he will more likely sell assets due to their fear of being part of the scandal
I see a career move for Rupert Murdoch. He will cast himself as Emperor Julius Caesar opposite Angelina Jolie in the remake of Cleopatra…where, of course, he ends up being stabbed to death by members of the Roman senate.
It’s poetic.
The next thing old Rupert will be buying is some UK politicians. Anyone who doesn’t think he’s going to Plan B with BSkyB should think again. He’ll just go underground like the mole that he is and tunnel in from another direction.
It may take the rest of his life but he’ll get that deal in the end by hook or by crook and we know which one he’s most likely to use.
Murdoch’s been buy UK politicians for decades. And the US too. Look at the number of Republican candidates that have or had contracts with Fox News. Murdoch buys anyone he thinks can help him politically and if they don’t take the money, he gets dirt on them via the methods such as the hacking and holds it over their heads. When the police started investigating, he hacked their phones too. And when the police tried to get Rebekah Brooks to testify last time, she told them if they forced her to testify, she would ruin their personal lives. Suddenly she didn’t have to testify.
I believe the rest of the Republican party is up for sale.
Really? Does anyone have change for a dollar?
The GOP has already been bought and paid for back in the Reagan era.
The ones on the market are in the Democratic party, and with each year that passes the good ones like former Senator Feingold in Wisconsin have been picked off.
Its in the hand of the American people to start voting in decent politicians, a good place to start would be to start ignoring the garbage being fed to them by the US media.
“Will Murdoch buy something else?” Might I suggest a one-way ticket to Hell.
One can only pray that he is put on trial in the UK because none of the corporate lackeys in the US media or government will touch him.
Wow I remember clearly the same jealousy, hatred, contempt you people had for Lindsay Lohan, Charlie Sheen too…..and many others who are more successful than all of you! It is so sad to see this kind of public envy! Yes the US was so certain about Strauss Khan ( political fix by the way )….that he raped some hotel maid, but demons aren’t winning, because Strauss Khan was never guilty….so in the end innocent Rupert will be vindicated and all the demons who try to take good people down will have their rewards from GOD served to them! Remember guys what goes around comes back around…..:) god bless Rupert Murdoch and his family and friends and businesses! 777
“some hotel maid”? A hotel maid is not a hooker who happens to straighten up the bed after she leaves, mate. If she lied, then all my sympathy to Strauss Khan and his family and a pox on her; if he lied then he’s just another rick bloke who believes that crushing little people and ignoring their legal rights, is one of the perks of power.
Best laugh I’ve had in a long time. Murdoch’s not getting any younger. If he doesn’t pay here, he’ll pay eventually.
Robert Murduch will definitely buy something else, that is just who is it.
oh wow. For Rup that is close to the perfect storm, that can only be topped by one of his offspring pushing him out and his girlf dumping him…
Poor bloke… just because his paper corrupted a corrupt system…
He needs to buy a heart. And maybe something to use as a stand-in for his soul he traded in for those billions.
Don’t worry, it appears he’s been grooming his children to take over when the devil finally catches up with him. The name Murdoch in the “news/entertainment” business will (unfortunately) be around for a while.
