20th Century Fox Television has inked a pod deal with Rough House Pictures. Under the one-year pact, Rough House principals David Gordon Green, Jody Hill, Danny McBride and head Matt Reilly will develop animated and live-action comedies targeted for broadcast networks. This marks the first network TV deal for the company. Hill and McBride co-created the HBO live-action comedy series Eastbound & Down, now in production on its third season, and Green created the upcoming MTV animated comedy series Good Vibes. Additionally, Rough House is producing the Comedy Central comedy pilot Black Jack starring Ving Rhames. “We as a studio are always looking to be in business with people who we think have unique and specific voices, and the group from Rough House have that,” 20th TV chairman Gary Newman said. On the feature side, Pineapple Express helmer Green is directing the forthcoming Jonah Hill comedy The Sitter for 20th Century Fox Studios.

good luck with that 20th. As “funny” as some people view McBride and Co. the reality is that no one on a large scale is a amused by them. Jody Hill can’t direct a film for a broad audience. “EASTBOUND” was a minor success, but again, niche audience. McBride . . . he has peaked, and Gordon Green, well, I personally would love it if he went back to the beginning and started making passionate films like ALL THE REAL GIRLS again. He could win an Oscar, but instead he decides to play in the kiddie pool.
Too bad Danny’s star-vehicle career is on hold because YOUR HIGHNESS bombed. McBride ROCKS!!!
Did anyone else think Season 2 of Eastbound was too dark? Didn’t have that fun and humor the first season had. Went too far turning KP into a emotional wuss.
Rough House is hungry and on the way to expanding. Alex, Brandon, Matt and the rest of the crew are totally fab.
Read the script to GOOD VIBES. It’s pretty good and BLACK JACK is HILARIOUS.
Danny emerged with the wrong script for his starring-role. Shoulda did something a little more mainstreamish. I think that flop really put a dent in his film career regarding bigger roles.
Right on Roughhouse! Great company! Good for them;)
DMB is a better tv fit. Starring in a feature, his character gets worn. 30 minutes of his machismo is cool and funny. Anything longer gets tiresome.
Nice move 20th. This brain trust has produced one failure (“Observe and Report,” nearly a career-killer for Anna Faris) and one money-hemorrhaging unmitigated disaster in “Her Majesty.”
Yes Green had a small hit wit “Pineapple Express” but that had Apatow’s fingerprints all over it, not this crew’s. E & D is an OK show, but it’s niche — there are plenty of funnier shows on cable and broadcast.
Hill has no demonstrated ability to connect with audiences of any size in any way. Green is best suited delivering some nice low-budget indies shamelessly aping Terrence Malick, and McBride is a character actor notable for being a distracting and wearisome presence in most anything he’s in
So NATURALLY the gang at Fox decided these guys are the perfect partners for TV comedy.
“CAA said these guys are really funny!”
Uh. OK. Score another one for CAA.
DALIA: WHAT PLANET DO YOU LIVE ON? Obviously not Planet Hollywood. Green; best suited for low budget indies? Are you kidding me? Indies suck! Another example of a assistant from kansas who belongs… somewhere in Kansas. Keep the comedies to the pros. Tune into indies on another channel honey
I say Rough House are WAAAAAY better then Apatow. Has anyone seen an APATOW film that they liked since SUPER BAD. Doubt. His movies have turned into sappy, over-long, good for first half, horrible for next half movies. Did I mention they are WAY.TOO.LONG. Ughhhh.
Apatow vs Rough House???
Apatow has longevity. Rough House is more creative. Longterm, Rough HOuse.
Rough House hasn’t proven sh*t. Save your Apatow comparisons for 2015. Then we’ll talk.
ROUGH HOUSE VERSUS APATOW….
QUESTION – Why do people always complain about how long/boring apatow movies are, but then STILL go to watch them, only to return home and complain about them again. Never ending cycle.
Apatow has pretty much turned into a drama dude. Maybe he always was; I mean, Freeks n Geeks wasn’t exactly over the top hilarious
TOP FOUR OVERRATED COMEDY DIRECTORS
JAY ROACH – Dinner with Schmucks was horrible
TODD PHILLIPS – Okay, so he got lucky with the Hangover. But part 2 was an EXACT replica. We seen nothing new. DUE DATE was pretty sh*tty. (Personally think the script MOST ANNOYING MAN IN THE WORLD was better and had same plot). Look at rest of Phillip’s movies. All are pretty awful, even if they DID make money.
SCOT ARMSTRONG- OMG. SEMI PRO. Nuff said.
JUDD APATOW – unless we pack a suitcase and plan on spending the next two years in the theater with a lot of caffeine to keep us afloat.
concusion: most comedy directors have a horrible track record. Then they create one big hit, and now, the rest of their horrible, untalented movies are then watched by people. Then the people complain how horrible it was, but continue watching the movies HOPING for another Super Bad, another OLD SCHOOL, but wonk wonk. It never comes
so true. So very very true
Wowzerz! Hangover 2 was pure insanitty! Check ya meds man!
I fully agree with your list. Please add C. Weiner to this list. He’s a dude in my UCLA class that thinks he’s the SHIZZZ, but infact, his shorts look like SHIZZZZ.
C.Weiner – you know who you are you dog you
Scot Armstrong – he’s still alive? I thought he moved to Reseda
Hangover 2 WAS SO BAD. But you’re right. Can’t wait for part 3.
WTF happened to David Gordon Green? Your Highness and Pineapple Express were cringe-inducing “experiments.” The action and effects sequences in Your Highness were embarrassing.
You must be an intern in the industry. There’s no such thing as “experiments” . This isn’t science.
These guys don’t have it. Not sure they can deliver. I think their success, if you can call it that, was short lived. But 20th sucks too so there is that. Danny is done and David thinks he is a better director than he is.
LAPI – Have you read that? Or Mr.Machine?
Sure, they stumbled with Your Highness. But they still have a great slate.
I have to agree with JASON DEAN – Pineapple sucked and Your Highness was damn near death defying. David Gordon Green is def overrated.
Yeah, rough house is totally overrated. McBride is a wrap. Has to stick to tv.
Even though Black Jack is a cool pilot, can’t really picture Ving Rams playing the role.
Good luck to them though
Apatow is a CHIC FLIC writer now. Next feature… How Seth Rogen fell in love with a horse. BTW, wasn’t ZACK AND MIRI MAKE A PORNO the worst film ever made in history.
APATOW has lost major cool points lately. Hasn’t delivered. But will bounce back. Rough House however, not sure if they’re bouncing back after Highness.
Probably stuck with TV from now on. Sorry Danny
PINEAPPLE EXPRESS was WACK.
(if ya know what I mean).
And that’s comin from me, a huge fan of Pineapple Express
