EXCLUSIVE: Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic split-personality tale of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is getting a contemporary interpretation with Hyde, a drama series project from Up In the Air co-writer Sheldon Turner and ABC Studios that has been set up at ABC. This marks the first sale for Sheldon and Jennifer Klein’s recently launched company Vendetta, which has a first-look deal at ABC Studios. Turner will write Hyde, which centers on Grant Hyde, a thirtysomething ER doctor with a degenerative eye condition who is conflict-averse and hesitant to be captain of his own destiny. After attempting an experimental treatment to improve his eyesight, he begins to experience a strange side effect — when he goes to sleep, his id manifests itself as Hyde, a fearless, gregarious personality who takes control where Grant cannot. Turner and Klein will executive produce the project, described as an odd buddy show where the buddies happen to be the same person. Going into this development season, the Jekyll & Hyde lore was one of the areas ABC was looking to mine. On TV, it last was tackled on NBC’s short-lived drama My Own Worst Enemy. ABC has been actively exploiting popular public domain concepts over the past year. The network has the Brothers Grimm fairytale-themed series Once Upon a Time coming up, along with Revenge, a contemporary female-centered take on The Count of Monte Cristo.

Sounds like a really interesting take. Looking forward to seeing what Turner does with this as these themes are right in his wheelhouse.
This sounds awful. A buddy show where they are the same person?
Cough! Hack!
The pilot may be interesting, but it will never be a series.
It sells because idiot TV execs think it sounds cool.
One would suspect the real inspiration here is the BBC’s recent, and wonderful, J and H update called Jekyll.
Smart route to go with this sort of concept. Sounds like it could be a lot of fun.
Ask not for whom the bell tolls. It tolls for thee.
hip hip hooray! This is gonna be so effin awesome.
Jen Klein has been in the business 15 years and still does not have a single producing credit to her name. Why would ABC give a deal to someone with that track record? Makes no sense. This is another ABC “relationship” deal.
Aren’t they all?
The Tunerminator strikes again. Good for Klein. Seen her at bat before, hopefully this time around script turns into pilot and poof! Come midnight not into a pumpking, but a pilot and a show.
I’m staying tuned to this BatChannel.
Me hopes we see more from this dynamic duo.
This comment has it all: terrible puns, age old references that don’t quite work, and plenty of obligatory ass kissing. Bless you.
Sounds just like the terrific 6-part BBC show Jekyll. Guess Turner saw it on Netflix Instant and decided to pitch it as his own.
The last hour was rubbish, but the first 5 were great.
@Anonymous: I concur. The 1st 5 eps. Were fantastic. They nailed Hyde to perfection. I agree that the final ep was a disappointment. I guess they didn’t know how to end it and perhaps come out of it with a happy ending. I believe they should have done more with his sons at the end.
As for this Hyde on ABC… I wish them luck, I’ll tune in and check it out… but as much as I like ABC they are not BBC and this show will have a hard time coming close to tone and acting as Jeckyl did so well.
If Hyde was on FX or say Starz (they are loving them some BBC now) then I would have higher hopes.
But then again… ABC pulled off LOST and that was one of the best ‘Big 3′ network shows in a long long time.
Sadly, I wanted the version of Jekyll/Hyde that Shaun Cassidy worked up a few years ago to show up eventually, but I weirdly think Cassidy to be a way better creator/writer than given credit.
11 years in the business and Sheldon Turner is still carrying his license to print money. It seems like everything this guy pitches gets sold, however during his 11 year run, he only has 4 produced film credits to his name, and two of them, he was fortune the WGA came to his rescue and gave him credit for simply being there first.
I don’t know how he does it, but he’s got over 30 movie scripts in development, including “By Virtue Fall” which he and Klein are producing and Turner will direct, if it ever gets made.
Yet, I’m really puzzled about how he was able to get a production deal with ABC. This is a guy who had previously attached himself to some 15 TV deals for shows that have never, I mean, NEVER even gone to pilot.
I’ll give you the list if anybody wants. None of his sold pilots, whether he’s the writer and creator or just executive producer of, have ever gone to pilot.
Hey, don’t get me wrong. I’d love to have the career he’s having. But, Turner and Klein have go to be two of the most successful Hollywood players, to virtually have no produced credits to back up their enormous amount of projects they get paid to develop.
Well I watched Hyde here in the USA on the BBC Channel and loved every minute of it. The actor who play Dr. Hyde is in the new TV series THE FOLLOWING playing the”serial killer”.
