Life Unexpected creator/executive producer Liz Tigelaar has reunited with the series’ executive producers Gary Fleder and Mary Beth Basile for The Joneses, a drama series project at ABC based on the 2009 indie film which was written and directed by Derrick Borte and starred Demi Moore and David Duchovny. ABC Studios, where Liz Tigelaar and Fleder’s Mojo Films are under deals, is producing.
The show is described as a family drama that follows the All-American Joneses, who’ve just moved into an upscale suburb to start a new life. But the Joneses have a secret they must keep from their new friends and neighbors – they aren’t a real family at all. (In the movie, they turn out to be guns-for-hire cast to play family members and do stealth product marketing among their neighbors.) Tigelaar and Mojo’s Fleder and Basile will executive produce alongside the the movie’s producer, Echo Lake Prods.

It looks like Paul Lee is doing a much better job at ABC than Steve McPherson did. He’s more of a creative type
Tim Allen should play the fake dad.
This is actually a really good idea. Such a great, underrated film. Liz is looking good , too.
Horrible movie, sorry.
Better idea for a series.
Yes, what a brilliant idea. Let’s make a TV show out of a movie that grossed less then 2 million dollars at the box office.
Seemed to work well with Buffy the Vampire Slayer…
Zing!
Another woman scoring a deal!!! GIRL POWER!!!
On top of being adorable, sweet and a fan of cheese, Liz is an amazing writer. She’s deserving of everything that comes her way.
WONDERFUL! I remember giving Liz her first big break. Now THAT’S Drama…!
This is the best news I’ve heard all day. Life Unexpected was a gem, and I trust in Liz Tigelaar
The movie was particualrly crummy, but as I watched it (and maybe I was one of the few that saw it in a theater) I kept thinking how much this played like a tv show. So maybe the source material didn’t work on the big screen, but it might play better on the small one.
It is definitely set up for product placement. so it could do something unique, like morph the ads and stories together to prevent surfing. But first and foremost, it needs good writing, good acting, and a good showrunner. (Please keep it on ABC and don’t offload it to a secondary cable channel.)
Let’s be frank about the real deal: The product placement opportunities will be *amazing*.
If MAD MEN can push booze even after its characters drive drunk and projectile vomit, THE JONESES selling brands even as their sellers are conflicted should be a walk in the park.
That is one horrible pitch. Does’t abc have enough of that type of shows. Desperate housewives the gates revenge. They’re not showing any creativity by just recycling.
It was an awful movie. I was sorry to see David Duchovny accept that role — he’s better than that, or could be. It left you feeling sick and there was no point, whatsoever. WHY CAN’T HOLLYWOOD HIRE EXECUTIVES THAT WILL STRIVE TO PUT OUT BETTER PRODUCT?
I never saw the movie because the premise sounded so unengaging: it’s basically people doing undercover market research? That’s a movie? That’s a series? Could someone who has seen the movie please explain to me how they made it interesting?
They’re not doing undercover market research. They’re showing off their companies products to get their shallow neighbors to buy them. Essentially, thy are a walking talking 24/7 advertisement.
The compelling part, that the family isn’t who they claim to be (and aren’t even a real family at that) IS interesting.
The reason they are there — to sell high end merchandise to their neighbors — doesn’t really have the legs to drive a series through multiple seasons.
Just watched movie for the first time a couple nights ago, and was very impressed: there wasn’t really any way to market it effectively (ironically), but this was leaps and bounds one of the best depictions of a very real problem in America: capitalist envy. It’s a very smart, very dark film. I’d be interested to check out what they do with series.
Its just about a group of people hired by the market to make people jealous of what they have so the items will sell. For instance, their given a struggling product (vodka in a juice pouch) and have to make it seem cool so that other will buy it. It’s interesting to see how this group of people come to like eachother and what their impact is on the people sound them. That what the film is really about v
‘WOMEN’ (Not Girls) make “deals” everyday!! Don’t try to continue the oppression, or more realistically, oppress us again by making comments that imply we haven’t established ourselves equally.. especially in the business world/workforce
That is all ..
