ABC Family has ordered 22 more episodes of its new drama series Switched at Birth. The network calls the pickup “back-season”, bringing the total first-season order to the show to 32 episodes. Switched at Birth, which debuted on June 10 with for an initial run of 10 episodes, will air its summer finale Aug. 8 and will return with originals in early 2012. Following a strong start, Switched at Birth hit series highs in viewers 12-34 in its most recent airing July 25. It is currently pacing as ABC Family’s No. 2 freshman season ever in total viewers and the 18-34 and 18-49 demos, behind only the freshman season for The Secret Life of the American Teenager. Switched at Birth, starring Katie Leclerc and Vanessa Marano, tells the story of two teenage girls who discover they were accidentally switched as newborns in the hospital. Lizzy Weiss, Paul Stupin and John Ziffren serve as executive producers. There is no word yet on ABC Family’s freshman drama series The Nine Lives of Chloe King, whose ratings performance has not been as strong.

My wife and I watch both shows (I admit it!). SECRET LIFE is just plain trash — watchable, but trash — but SWITCHED AT BIRTH is actually very, very good. Well written, extremely well acted and by far the best show on ABC Family right now. It’s poised to have a long run.
i beg to differ about secret life. i love it because it has so many things that teens like myself can sometimes relate to:relationships,love,sex,drugs,pregnancy,divorce,death,abortion,high school,adoption,mentally challenged siblings or family members,abstinance,religion,friends,family dynamics,foster care,and even jobs.i think it touches everything that a teenager could go through or relate to.and what i like about it is that they write it so that it is a little more dramatic. and i also am a big fan of switched at birth.it shows something that doesnt hapen often.i reeeeally like it.but secret life is also a VERY good show. in my opinion it isnt trash.
I’m pretty sure that in high school when a girl gets pregnant the last thing that ever happens is that she’s the top name on a bunch of boy’s dating list, or that she stays perfectly thin and pretty through her entire pregnancy. This show had a good idea, but it’s not realistic at all, and totally doesn’t show the real trouble of being a pregnant teen. Had it actually gone there, it would have been a real gem. Unfortunately a lot of teens don’t know the real world or even the true nature of high school events ’til after high school, and some after college. So yeah, it’s going to seem like a perfectly relate-able show to teens like yourself, but that’s why it makes the big bucks. Teens like you. ^_^

I watch all monday and tuesday’s shows From SECRET LIFE to SWITCHED AT BIRTH and The Nine Lives of Chloe king and Pretty little lyers and now am addicted to them but I work nights starting sept 1 2011 so will be tapping them.So I don’t miss them. Even The lying game is a good show too. When does switchwed at birth return aproximately?
I have not been able to find out when does “Switched at Birth”, return ? Could anyone please post when this show will return; time, place,etc. I do enjoy this show very much. This show has realisum, the actors are very good,the writers, the entire crew that produces ” Switched at Birth “, have a winner in my opinion. This is the first t.v. show that has come along in awhile that is refreshing. Thank-you, I will be waiting to hear such information.

Switched at birth returns janurary 3rd at 7.00 a clock 2012
“Switched at Birth” continuation of season 1 will premiere January 3rd, 2012. If you are a overseas residence and still somehow get cable (which is possible), it will premiere January 4th, 2011. The showtimes differ on where you are, but other than that everything will be back to the regular times.
Why Aren’t The Newest Episodes On ABC Website ?
SECRET LIFE is total trash. It’s addicting to watch all the bad acting and the ridiculous plot twists. But SWITCHED AT BIRTH is a gem. It’s the kind of show I admit to others that I watch and recommend it to them. Glad it’s sticking around for a while.

i ordered netflix and saw the show switched at birth and I loved it. I thought it was going to be boring especially with all the writing came on the screen but that actually made it more enjoyable and helped the kids to learn to read faster. Can’t wait for more episodes.
I could not agree more. I just spent the day watching all 10 episodes. I fell in love with the characters and I’m looking forward to the seasons return. I’m very happy that there is a show out there that I can enjoy this much.

SWITCHED AT BIRTH is well written and also is a good story not only are they switched at birth but how many shows have you seen with a deaf girl. I have alot of friends that are deaf and heard of hearing so they can realate with her when it comes to the deaf part. With how you said THE SECRET LIFE is trash I don’t agree, I like show. I don’t watch it all the time but I like it.

32 Episodes for a single season of a 1-hour drama? Havn’t heard that in a LONG time… But I’m glad for the show, it’s definitely the channels best post-”Greek” series yet…
Yeah, 32 episodes a season went out in the 90s.I believe Beverly Hills 90210 was the last series to have that many episodes in 1998.
Excellent news! I only hate that next week is the finale. It’s going to be a long wait until early next year! My girlfriend and I watch this together, we both love it- especially the most recent episode.
Secret life is an amazing show as well at switched at birth. Both shows are extremely well written and have wonderful actors. The nine lives of Chloe king is also a very good show as all of abc family shows are, but the plot doesn’t seem to attract many viewers. I hope that they will still renew it though.

I personally love The Nine Lives! My friends do too! It makes you think a lot, which is good for the brain. And with all the bad things in her life, I want to see what is going to happen next! I really hope it gets renewed. It’d be amazing, It’s my close second favorite show! PLL is my favorite, I can NOT wait until the Halloween special! It’s going to be great! Awesome! I watch a several of ABCFamily shows (DON’T JUDGE ME), but this is the only one that my 34 year-old self (last year in the target demo) doesn’t feel even the tiniest bit sheepish keeping on the DVR.
The show is very well written and I’m glad it has been recognized and found an audience. It deserves it.

I really like thus show! Was suprised…Secret Life is terrible…and one of the girls (the sister?) is the mist wooden actress I’ve ever seen. I was therefore shocked at the quality of this show. Great actors/acting. Interesting characters. Well done all around!
Yay, writing staff! you just got 22 more episodes… of SEASON 1?! What BS! Typical ABC family crap. How do they get away with this? The crews been on hiatus for months. Why don’t they just call it a 56 episode season 1? That way the never have to bump anyone to a new pay scale. DISGUSTING! Not a surprise with the execs over there.

I absolutely love this show. We have deaf grandparents and it’s really the first show that we can all watch together. It has a little bit of everything with deaf actors who speak and deaf actors who sign all folded into a family drama. Katie LeClerc, Sean Berdy and Marlee Matlin are great and all the hearing actors who sign are fantastic too. And no one minds that the show has subtitles. It really shows that deaf people can do anything.
Our hands are waving in the air and we can’t wait for the show to come back!

i loooooove this show!!!!! it is amazing!!!! but my favorite is still secret life! but it is nice to watch secret life and be totally involved in it like it is a soap opera and then watch switched at birth which is a little more serious.both shows r perfect for a teenager like me!they balance each other out and im veeeeery happy that they ordered more episodes!!

I love this show to me it is truly original. Just think about how many family really do go thew this in life? Finlly a show for the deaf that they can watch and understand. I just wish they would have a speaker for people to understand

I think a speaker would undermine the show, but I agree that the words come too fast. I really want them to put the words up sooner.
I’ve always been interested in sign language, and I’ve been using this show to teach me some words. (It’s very helpful.)
The reason I love this show so much is because of the issues it brings up regarding the deaf community and what it’s like being deaf. I agree with Anonymous 2 that having a speaker would be strange and diminish the authenticity. Also, if anyone is interested, a great way to learn signs is by going to signingsavvy.com. It has videos of the signs, not just pictures, which is very helpful
How about we just keep these new episodes running and start season two in actual season two. It’s gonna be a long wait to start watching again. This is the best show on ABC. Keep up the good work!

I’m so excited! This has become my favorite show over SLOOAT and PLL. The season finale made me cry, I can’t wait for the new episodes!
I am a mom of three and have watched every kid show known to man and I have to say this is by far my favorite show. I love the actors two of which are from my younger days. They all compliment each other. I don’t think you can replace any of them. So well written that I am sucked into the show every week. I hate that it is over, hey but at least it will get us through the winter months here in the east when it returns.

Excuse me? The only reason “9 lives” hasn’t come back is because it doesn’t have a good plot. The show is relatively good in some ways, but the only reason they might not get renewed is because it doesn’t attract viewers. The plot is all over the place. It doesn’t really seem like it’s in order. Thus being said, “Switched at Birth” is a great show, the plot is well done, and shows what it’s like to be deaf, and how families get through problems like these. (Well, not AS big).
