EXCLUSIVE: In the latest quick and big sale this development season, a drama from The Shield creator Shawn Ryan and feature writer Karl Gajdusek just landed at ABC with a hefty pilot production commitment. The project, titled The Last Resort, was pitched to the networks on Friday with the deal at ABC closing in principal last night, though final points are still being ironed out. Sony Pictures TV, where Ryan is based with an overall deal, is producing. The Last Resort is described as a big swing and massive in scope. It is a thriller set in the near future when the country is very fractured and revolves around the crew of a U.S. nuclear submarine who become hunted after ignoring an order to shoot nuclear missiles. They escape to a NATO listening outpost where they publicly declare themselves to be the world’s smallest nuclear nation with 24 nuclear warheads. The show will explore the society the fugitives create, the natives they meet and how what they’ve done affects the group and its unity. “It also allows us to examine what is going on in this country in micro form,” Ryan said. The project came together when Marney Hockman, Ryan’s executive at his MiddKid Prods company, brought in Gajdusek, whom she had been pursuing for a couple of years. Ryan and Gajdusek then came up with the idea for The Last Resort and decided to write it together. This is the second project from Ryan, repped by WME and the Shuman Co, to land a major deal this development season, his first at Sony TV. His collaboration with Criminal Minds creator Simon Mirren, a crime procedural, was recently bought by CBS with a put pilot commitment. Gajdusek, repped by Verve and Management 360, is an in-demand feature writer. He recently did production work on the Liam Neeson film Unknown, wrote the upcoming Trespass, starring Nicole Kidman and Nicolas Cage as well as the adaptation of graphic novel Oblivion for Universal that Joseph Kosinski will direct and Tom Cruise will star in, and thriller Last Days Of American Crime with Sam Worthington attached to star. The scribe, who started off in television on Dead Like Me, is currently rewriting Viking at Working Title with Baltasar Kormakur attached to direct.

That sounds really cool, actually.
For the most part I’m just a bitter writer who gets especially bitter when I saw crap scripts selling and crap writers get work and worse, getting rich (cough cough Alan Loeb), but damn — Gajdusek is the real deal. One of the very very VERY few writers I actually get jealous of when I read. He is a total baller, awesome to see him tearing it up.
What a great companion piece this will be for shows like Good Christian Belles and The Middle!
“…the crew of a U.S. nuclear submarine who become hunted after ignoring an order to shoot nuclear missiles.” This sounds terrible. You won’t get the Military fans, the Conservative fans, those who happen to be proud of America. I suppose you’ll get the dreamy Liberals who think opposing the military & America, and starting a nuclear nation on a Hawaiian like set. I wonder what their Constitution will be like?
This has conservative written all over it, Ron…
All they want to do is tear down the Constitution… so I’m not following your logic.
No, pal. You’ll probably get the people who oppose nuclear annihilation, which, last time I checked, is most of humanity.
@hollywoodron: you wanna let the concept actually play out and see how it goes? Maybe the plot against America is BY Godless liberals. Maybe there’s a lunatic who started this madness off. Wanna let a talented group of people actually get going, make some art and not shit on everything that doesn’t (without you knowing anything about it) pass through you ideological lens? Way to fuck up your whole life with your ideological addictions. What’s next? Big Bang Theory must run a warning in Red States “NOTE: The BIG BANG is only a theory. There are other God-driven explanations for the origin of the universe?”
Moron
Well, if your goal with your comment was to demonstrate how divided (IE – fractured) this country is right now…mission accomplished.
I’m retired military and a former missile launch officer. This sounds interesting to me.
Wow….
and you come to deadline and post comments?
Interesting!
What if they refused the liberal President’s orders to launch their missiles against polluters?
Given the calls for radical change in GOP presidential candidates, I think you’d be hard pressed to find a member of the modern conservative movement who loves the country.
Lots of people who are dissatisified with things *about* the country love *it*. Oh, well, the student radicals got jabs like this back in the 60s, so I guess I’m big enough to take it from you, Joe.
Ummm…sounds just like the Japanese anime SILENT SERVICE, in which a Japanese submarine crew declare themselves to be an independent sovereign nation.
Sounds a bit like Jericho mixed in with some of Metal Gear.
I disagree with Hollydron… Ryan is NOT a liberal and I’m willing to withhold judgement on “the message” of the project until I see the finished product. We don’t know WHY they don’t fire… could it be the leader is a nut job? Could it be it meant sure distruction of the US and that they know secrets even the leader does not? We don’t know how it will play out. Shawn Ryan LOVES this country and many of his projects have been pro-American… and any question about a liberal bent would be eliminated by viewing his last project Chicago Code… where they continuously smacked back at liberalism… from political to the green movement – (the latter with a smack at the lightbulbs they are forcing down our throats that, oh by the way… contain mercury and make you severly sick if you drop one! and OH… they produce DIRTY ELECTRICITY which has been proven to make people ill… even destroy immune systems! But hey guys… make sure you FORCE this on people and BAN our regular lightbulbs!
Really, and call me crazy, but maybe Shawn Ryan is less concerned with politics and more worried about TELLING THE GODDAMN STORY! CHRIST! Why, for the love of Pete, does it always come down to politics?
I mean, my bleeding heart is WAY over to the left, and frankly I’ll watch whatever Ryan writes (did you WATCH “The Shield,” BTW? Did that exactly scream “conservative”? Sure he worked with Mamet on “The Unit,” and Mamet’s politcs have gone a bit wonky for my taste, but maybe that’s less politics and more working with a Pulitzer Prize-winning writer; if Mamet called me up to collaborate, I’d nod a lot and keep my politics to myself).
And how does being liberal apparently mean you’re anti-American. Again, screaming liberal here, and I LOVE my country. We have the greatest country in the world, but that doesn’t mean I’m blind to our faults and flaws. We eff up a lot on the global stage; it takes a bigger person to be able to admit that than it does to just blithely ignore it and act like nothing’s happened.
Sounds like a fresh take on LOST without the time travel and magic. One to watch, for sure.
Personally I think this sounds like a cool idea. Why you see it as a completely left wing show is kinda ridiculous If you ask me.
I hate to be the one to tell you this, but liberals are incredibly proud of the United States of America. We believe it is the greatest country on Earth. We’re just tired of people such as yourself ruining it because you refuse to acknowledge the facts, our history and how our goverentment actually works.
I’ll bet you truly love this country. So do I. We just have different perspectives on how it should be governed. That’s it. It’s not just your country and it’s not just mine. It’s all Americans, and there are a lot of different opinions on what’s best for it.
The difference between you and I is that I respect other people’s opinions and viewpoints even if I don’t necessarily agree with it. I find that there is always some issues that we can all agree on and try and start from there. You bitch and whine. You complain about people who disagree with you like they are not equal citizens. The world isn’t that black and white. It’s a giant shade of grey.
The truth is the party system is a lie. We’re not Democrats or Republicans, we’re Americans. It’s in all our best interests to work together. And the powers that be would like nothing more than to see a truly divided nation. It means we keep our eye off the prize while we squabble over nothing, like the political tones of TV shows.
Your choice… Are all Americans equal, or just the ones you agree with? The first step to heal this country comes from people like you. So step up.
And to Shawn and Karl, best of luck on the show. I think it sounds pretty badass.
Go Midd-Kidd! Go Shawn! Go Marney!
As long as it’s not a straight cop/medical/legal procedural how could I not at least be intrigued?
Actually, we can say all that we want to say and blow all the hot air we want about this project – be it liberal, conservative or moderate. Just shut up – everyone – and give this project a chance to make it to pilot (at least). All these two brilliant guys threw out there is a somewhat “hand-drawn” premise – let the picture develop with its “paint” (filling in and developing subplots and situations) and “color” (fleshing out of characters). Then – and only then – we can make judgements that actually make sense.
Yay for Marney! This project sounds cool and thoughtful. Love smart women in show biz that work hard get stuff going!
