Are things getting reversed this development season? The unwritten rule of the annual broadcast pitch season is that drama projects go out first, followed by comedy. But while hourlong pitches have been sluggish out of the gate this summer, comedy projects have been coming fast and furious. As of week ago, one major broadcast network had already heard more than 40 comedy pitches. A lot of the early comedy activity was driven by Sony TV, which has already sold 17-18 half-hour scripts, including
a Bewitched remake at CBS, from write Marc Lawrence and the producers of Nora Ephron’s panned feature adaptation, single-camera comedy Let It Go at Fox, written by DJ Nash and executive produced by Peter Tolan and Michael Wimer, about a guy obsessed with the social contact, as well as a half-hour project from Pam Brady at CBS about retirees moving to a college town, and BAMFS, a high-school comedy at ABC from writer Leah Rachel and producer Jamie Tarses. Meanwhile, Rough House has sold the first project under its recently signed pod deal with 20th TV, a comedy at Fox about a disastrous mayor written by Max Winkler and Jake Johnson to be directed by Winkler (Ceremony).
Sony is traditionally early to the marketplace as an independent studio that benefits from pitching shows when the networks’ development coffers are still full. Also energizing the comedy market is the fact that there is a new head of comedy at NBC, Tal Rabinowitz, and a new broadcast buyer, the CW, which is open for comedy pitches this year. And while the biggest commitments so far this season have gone to drama projects, the Marc Guggenheim/Greg Berlanti legal drama at Fox and the Michael Brandt/Derek Haas firefighter drama from Wolf Films at NBC, the large volume of early comedy sales has industry people take notice. What’s more, the first off-cycle pilot order this summer also went to a comedy, the Marco Pennette/Dave Flebotte project starring Kirstie Alley.

I suppose the Nora Ephron movie just got more “meta”.
So the Bewitched movie wasn’t bad enough, now we get a bad remake of a classic show inflicted on us.
If a miracle occurred & the show lasts, will they change Darrins after five years?
I think an updated Bewitched would be great as long as they keep it single-cam like the original. And as long as Ephron stays the hell away…
With a laugh track?
Bewitched? Really?!? What the fuck are you guys smoking over there? What’s next? I know, how about remakes/reboots of The Beverly Hillbillies, Green Acres, Gilligan’s Island, Petticoat Junction, Mayberry RFD, Gomer Pyle USMC, I Dream of Jeannie, Father Knows Best, My Three Sons, All in the Family, Happy Days, the Jeffersons, Make Room for Daddy, I Love Lucy, Amos & Andy, Topper, Get Smart, the Partridge Family, the Brady Bunch, the Honeymooners, My Mother the Car, My Favorite Matian, thr Addams Family, the Munsters, Gidget, Dobie Gillis, the Patty Duke Show, the Flying Nun, That Girl, Julia, Mister Ed, – you get the idea.
But why stop at 30-minute sitcoms? Let’s reboot/remake Barnaby Jones, Lost in Space, the Fugitive, the Rifleman, Gunsmoke, Bonanza, 77 Sunset Strip, Rawhide, Ironside, Perry Mason, the Wild Wild West, Love American Style, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, Flipper, Lassie, Hee Haw, Laugh-In, Dr. Kildare, Ben Casey, Medical Center, Marcus Welby MD,
See – I’ve just saved the television studios millions of dolalrs in development.
Oh wait a minute. SOme of these are ACTUALLY being done! Oh crap, the future looks sad.
The producers of the Bewitched
movie get another shot to ml more money out of it? The take of the movie was flawed at the outset. Nicole Kidman was an ideal Samantha. The take and script were off. They failed. Miserably. They pushed it forward blindly just because they got Ephron. They get another shot???!!!!
They Better cast Elizabeth Banks. She’d be perfect. Or maybe Kristen Bell. If they kick her off Mad Men I really think January Jones would be a good choice, not only does she really look like Liz Montgomery BUT she is also an underrated comedienne. Check out her SNL dingital short!
Elizabeth Banks is one of the few females that can greenlight a film… so television isn’t in her near future. Kristen Bell has a series and January Jones is like watching paint dry…
Nellie? anyone know what the winkler/johnson pilot is about? details? liked ceremony quite a lot.
Max winkler and Leah Rachel both hot young voices……..good call
leah rachel : YES
I’m sure the fact that she looks like Shakira has nothing to do with her success.
They had a great cast in that movie and ruined it with the stupid ‘real witch stars in Bewitched’ idea, all Ephron’s fault.
Great idea CBS , because Hawaii 50 was SUCH a hit, right??. The premiere did worse numbers than the old and tired CSI Miami, and at the end of the season over 5 million viewers have dumped the lame remake.
So of course let’s go with another remake.
…Except for the fact that it has sold internationally and makes money. But I understand and kind of agree with you… let’s keep the remakes to a minimum. We already have CHARLIE’S ANGELS coming. The only other one I would be open to would be a reworked WONDER WOMAN. If they think the older generation will watch this new version, they’re mistaken. But at this point the project has a long way to go.
What made Bewitched work was the ’60s. Can you imagine a vapid, single, reality TV watching, Kim K-emulating, chattering on cell phone, self-centered modern chick with magic witch powers? Not funny.
Plus no Larry Tate. Or Uncle Arthur.
Pass.
I’ve been hearing a lot of buzz about Leah Rachel, I’m pulling for this one to get on air!! Good catch ABC + Tarses
The only good thing about this potential ‘Bewitched’ remake is that the movie was SOOOO bad that they can see their mistakes and HOPEFULLY not repeat them.
While Nicole Kidman was actually a great casting choice (she does look like Elizabeth) the character was NOT Samantha Stevens and the plot was NOT ‘Bewitched’ so she had nothing to work with.
‘Bewitched’ worked for two reasons, 1) it’s a charming concepts with stories about day to day domesticity 2) The cast. Elizabeth Montgomery was a tv’s Grace Kelly, the formidable Agnes Moorehead came with a Hollywood A list resume and both Dick York and Dick Sargent had great chemistry with Elizabeth.
It’s a classic…it could work again but it’s a classic.
What is the jake johnson/winkler show about? Roughouse is on fire right now..
OK, I hate the idea of Bewitched being further violated, but….
If it flies, then the character of Samantha – or whatever they name the female lead – needs to be a warm, funny, luminescent actress. (Kidman may have looked like Elizabeth Montgomery, but is far too distant and porcelain doll-esque in her performances.)
My casting suggestion would be Becki Newton. She was great on Ugly Betty and Love Bites (where she was totally wasted). I could see her making something of the idea and updating the character without taking away Samantha’s wide-eyed enthusiasm and warmth.
yeah, rough house is on a roll. Jake Johnson is funny as shit. Cant wait to see 30 Minutes too.
Well I can’t say I’ve read leah rachel’s pilot, but one of her feature specs was being passed around last year and man was it bad. BAD. talking head reps cheering the script on aside, no one reading it could figure out how someone with cliche humor who couldn’t even pluralize words properly got representation, much less heat on projects. Here’s hoping the writing has improved…
Cliche? Are you kidding? Is she a polished writer, no. Is she a risky writer, yes. Everything I’ve read of hers is totally fresh. Yes, she can’t spell. She’s getting heat because she has a unique POV on everything, and her writing is charmingly loose and not manically structured like everything else that passes my desk. AS for the rough house project, I would like to know more about it.
RISKY? UNIQUE POV??? Are you joking? Please say yes. I’m not saying a young, rough-around-the-edges writer can’t grow and become awesome. For whatever reason (it ain’t talent) the writer has a strong team and heat on projects, which means she’ll probably work forever. But right now it’s all refried poor-man’s Diablo Cody for the easily impressed.
That’s it, I’ve officially lost faith in anyone in a Hollywood with a so-called “desk” for scripts to pass through.
She is in no way poor man’s Diablo Cody. She has a somewhat fucked up POV on everything that is interesting. You should read her new stuff. ANd by that i mean her HBO pilot starfuckers which is beyond better than anything they have on that channel right now. I agree her first one Rachel cherry or whatever was a little cliche, but i would get off the bitter unemployed train quick if i were u.
Due to her fucked up spelling you’re really judging a new young writer?? Let’s be honest, people a get a little freaked out when a writer who has a natural talent passes up others who have gone through formal “by the book” training. Maybe that’s why she has so much heat, shes not your everyday wannabe writer.
agreed. I am so sick of all these unemployed HIGHLY EDUCATED “writers” hating on people with natural talent. It’s like being an actor……if you got it you got it. Doesn’t have to do with your “training”.
